[VIC] Myki Yearly Public Transport Pass - 9% Discount @ PTUA

70

So you don't miss out on getting next year's travel at 2016 prices, PTUA would encourage you to either -

  • Order and pay for your new ticket by 8th November -or-
  • Order and pay for your renewal by the end of November as PTV usually bring forward PTUA December order cutoff deadline

NOTE: If you miss the PTUA DECEMBER order (which will close earlier than 8th Dec), PTUA are unable to order until January, which means you will pay 2017 fares.

Because it's paid in advance, you'll lock-in 2016 prices.
But due to deadlines imposed on us by PTV, you'll have to order and pay by November 30th to beat the rise. After that, higher 2017 prices will apply.

Ah I just can't bring myself around to the idea of paying for a year of Myki pass at once…especially when I might decide to ride the motorbike into work in better weather and/or usually take 4 weeks leave a year (spent outside Melbourne). But this is a good reminder to get in early to avoid the 2017 price rises.

    • Same - for the entirety of January I'm going to have to drive in to work because otherwise it will mean the unholy trinity of Bus->train->tram to get to work due to the level crossing upgrades. And I'm taking 6 weeks off from April to June, so really a yearly pass is of no benefit to me.

      • you could always buy it, but activate it… in June. You'd still save

        a. based on the annual pass being cheaper compared to daily / weekly / monthly passes (there's also a 10% discount for commuter club if you get it through work, I think?)
        b. buying it before the price goes up - and the 9% alluded to, above.

    • Before purchasing, I like to check my myki usage for the last 180 days:
I've travelled (return) on about 108 of those days. That's about $1692 per year (if I were using mykimoney) vs $1,395 + fees.

FYI, Myki Passes are pro-rata refundable. So perhaps it was still work out. Or buy one and don't use it until after your travel plans (July for you).
(Or be a super OzBargainer and buy two, one for 2018 or beyond!)

      • Early this year for the first time ever I lost my myki, and it was a PTUA yearly. They can't transfer the balance of any Myki Pass to a new card, so their "pro-rata refund" Myki Money transfer was to convert the entire pass to Myki money, calculate how much of the money had been "spent" to date, and transfer the difference to a new card. What a rip off

        • Prorata refund… Could that mean for example, if i changed jobs and longer required going into the city, i can just get the remainder of my myki refunded?

        • @MrEs: It's bad value, but yes (when bad value is better than nothing at all)

  • Shop small
    Amex

    • Save ~$240 -or-
Save $10 * number of AMEX cards * top up venues. You'd need at least four AMEX cards and time to get to all Shop Small businesses offering Myki Top-Up.

        8 amex.
3 myki top up spots close by to me.

        8 x 3 x 10 = $240

2nd run of shop small this yr.

        For another $240.

        my 2cents

I use Saturday mornings to do it… 2hrs for $240 potential value.

        Edit:
I use PT less than 200days per year.
25% of times i hitch a ride home. No need for the full $7.80 on some days.

Good value if you use PT daily

Is there a list of these myki locations for shop small? Thanks

        • @nicolemao:

          Yes. There is.

Look for last shopsmall myki location post.
Please confirm and check via shopsmall map.

  • Is there any 1 week pass? Will be down in Melbourne for holidays next month.

    • There's a couple of options - buy one of these, and top it up with $7.80 per weekday of travel or $6 per weekend day - https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/myki-visitor-value-p… or you can buy a 7-day pass/top-up for $39 + myki cost ($6). Cheaper for valid concession (good luck with interstate concession though).

If you're staying in the city and not travelling far out, trams are free.

      • Thanks Lukian. Will be staying in CBD area, but would like to travel around the city.

  • Any idea how much the price will raise for in 2017?

    • Some years it doesn't, but last year was CPI+2.5%, I'd expect at least CPI if not the same again.

  • Is PTUA card applicable for travel via vline in metropolitan areas (CBD <-> Deerpark)?

    • Yes, it's just your normal Myki.

      • Thanks for the reply!

  • Nov 30 expiry to beat the price rise!
