Long time Ozbargainer, first time poster

Decided to get myself some eneloops after seeing all the eneloop rave here. Trust me, before Ozbargain I thought energizer/duracell were the best bet. As I was looking for a bargain stumbled on the 50% off deal @ Bing Lee.

You can get a Smart charger + 4 AA + 4 AAA for $42 (again thanks to Ozbargain, wasn't even aware of a smart charger before)

It is a bargain only if you can pick it up from the store though, the delivery fee sucks ($9 for each item).

The fine print

IME they don't work 'just as well'. In fact, the Aldi ones that I have bought in the past have only been about as good as the Woolworths Select LSD NiMH batteries. Turnigy ones are better, the Eneloop Pro's I have are better again.

  • +1

Perfect timing. Eneloops to power my babies toys for what she got for Xmas.

    Was running out of AAA.

    Got some pros as well.

  • +1
  • Perfect, bought 2x AA Pro, 1x AAA Pro and one fast charger bundle. 50% is pretty good but for future batteries I'll probably pick up the IKEA LADDAloops.

  • +2

So how does the smart charger work? Do I just put my batteries in, forget it, and it stops charging on its own? Better for eneloop batteries in general?

    • +1

      yep

      • Then consider one sold.

    • Yes and yes.

      • +1

But for $30 there are better smart chargers …… The Nitecore D4 comes to mind. Where are my Nitecore people at?

        • Where are the Nitecore D4's for $30 tho? They do look impressive

        • +3

          @kev98:

In fairness you'd need to order online, but given the vast types of batteries it charges ( different voltages, chemistries, and sizes) it's a no brainer IMHO.

It includes 4 AAs as well.

        • @ash2000: That seems like a great deal. Have you purchased from them before? It's not likely to be a fake is it?

        • @haribabuvk:

          Good point.

          @kev98:

I've ordered from Zapals d4 but not this item (I've had my d4 for years). People seemed happy when the D4 was listed sub $30 last time.

          @ash2000:

Be aware that Zapals don't ship them with an AU plug. If you request an AU plug, they ship it with a US plug and a non-compliant plug adaptor (no insulation on the pins). If you have little kids, plug adaptors are DANGEROUS - the holes are huge compared to the holes in powerpoints, your kids could stick anything into them and get electrocuted much more easily than with a standard powerpoint.

I received mine from Zapals on 10 November, according to the Nitecore website it is genuine.

        • +1

@ash2000: Thanks mate, will give it a go. And re: plugs, I requested AU but if not I do have some spares I can use. Thanks

        • +1

          @Russ:

Same with any Asian sold product……. Fortunately the Nitecore chargers just is a standard figure 8 socket……I, Like most people just swap it out with a spare Oz cord.

But good cautionary advice if you have rug rats.

Don't forget 8% cashrewards if you use them!

        • +1

Yep I use the Nitecore D4 best charger I've used. Purchased from fasttech about a year or so ago, still going strong. Charges my vape INR18650's, AAA & AA Eneloops, Laddaloops, Aldiloops as well. Just turn it on, insert batteries & forget. When you need a battery just swap em out.

    • I use 4 batteries for DSLR flash and Sangean DAB radio. When device dies, I take all four out, put into this charger, (I didn't compare prices).
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/La-Crosse-Technology-BC-700-Alpha…

I hold down button on the right which discharges all four at 100ma, then when 'dead enough' they are automatically charged at 200ma (slow charge) and then 'turns off' when finished. Make sure all batteries are over 2000maH. If you haven't used them for ages and are dead, they might need to be refreshed where they are killed, charged, killed, charged. People will argue that NIMH don't need to be killed, but it's not so clear and I do and the batteries are 5 years old and all going well. I think alkaline batteries are a bad idea, even ones for remotes and clocks.

      • +4

People will argue that NIMH don't need to be killed, but it's not so clear and I do and the batteries are 5 years old and all going well.

You are just eating up the life by discharging them like that.

If you are only charging at 200mA (1/10th C) then that is overnight charge but very "kind" to the cells. That's what is prolonging the life, not the discharging. However I bet that your 5 year old batteries are not pulling their full capacity any longer, you should test and confirm.

I think alkaline batteries are a bad idea, even ones for remotes and clocks.

Many devices cannot use rechargables, since the cutoff voltage is too low. A NiMH fully charged is probably close to 1.35V but they settle down to 1.25 or so pretty quickly. Many devices designed for Alkalines will show "low battery" at that point and refuse to work at under 1.2 or so. This is because an Alkaline cell is considered "flat" at 1.2V and there is very little energy left in it at that voltage.

A perfect example is X-Box controllers. The console tells you the batteries are flat at about 1.2V. So the life of NiMH is terrible, as you only get about 1/4 the capacity out of each charge. So, we use Alkalines, then I take the "used" ones nd put them is battery powered LED lights where they will run for a long time before finally carking it.

        • -1

My 5 year old Eneloops are all 2000maH and they are all over that rating when freshly charged. I have plenty of batteries and rotate them so I can afford to do an overnight charge. Obviously, if you can't use rechargeables then use alkaline.

        • Many devices designed for Alkalines will show "low battery" at that point and refuse to work at under 1.2 or so. This is because an Alkaline cell is considered "flat" at 1.2V and there is very little energy left in it at that voltage.

This totally explains why my Smart TV remote keeps telling me it's low with a AAA Eneloop battery

    ugh I wanted to buy 10x packs, delivered… Shipping & Handling(Flat Rate Shipping): $90

It sucks. Especially when 10 packs would fit in both size/weight into a 3kg prepaid satchel for $15.

A males quest for energy. If there's a deal on batteries, battery packs, battery chargers, solar panels/electricity discounts, men will pounce. My mum and female friends could not care less about these deals. Must be ingrained in us somewhere along the evolutionary track.

      • +3

        Our hunter-gatherer instinct for eneloop?

      • Hey! I'm female and I've got a cupboard full of eneloops, mostly the Japanese ones… they are so pretty, especially the glitter ones ;)

        • Snufi, shhhhhhh!

All the single OzBargain boys will think they've found their ideal woman!

      • -3

Females enjoy batteries too. Just dont care what price they pay for them since the amount of enjoyment that cannbe had far outweighs any monetary value.

        DILDO!

    • Other than for Xbox, TV remotes and audio recorders I tend to agree.

      • +1

I use them for remotes and clocks because they don't melt down when they go flat. Many devices are almost useless without a remote, and a leaky alkaline battery can do a LOT of damage.

NiMh batteries CAN damage your remote, but only if they have been abused (e.g. overcharging) and are leaking electrolyte. The damage isn't nearly as bad as that caused by Alkaline batteries.

    • +2

I bought so many Eneloops during the DSE days I thought I'd never need to buy a battery ever again. Well, they are all gone. Where…I don't know.

The bottom line is you can never have too many.i once thought you could… I was wrong.

    • Kid's toys! Especially post Christmas

    • +1

Non-removable embedded Li-Ion batteries age with use and eventually can't hold enough charge. The (typical) non-removable batteries found in most tablets, some phones (and so forth) make it hard for the average layman to replace them, let alone source them cheaply some years down the line.

AA/AAAs (and C and D-sized adapters for them) can be used in:

      • external camera flashes
      • wireless flash triggers
      • portable stereos (usually with c/d adapter)
      • voice recorders
      • travel shavers / groomers / trimmers
      • portable AM/FM radios
      • graphing calculators (Casio Classpad, Ti89, etc.)
      • wireless mic sets
      • some condenser mics require an AAA/AA
      • countless toys
      • countless radio control units need several AA/AAA
      • some noise-cancelling earphones/headphones
      • Wii remotes
      • xbox 360 wireless controllers
      • some motion-activated LEDs / kitchen cupboard lights too
      • bike lights
      • headlalmps
      • torches
      • some walkie talkies
      • some third-party and first-party walkie talkie battery packs require several AA/AAA
      • kitchen timers
      • guitar tuners
      • wireless keyboards and nice…

PS. I don't see why this deal was so upvoted. It's like people haven't discovered Amazon. It's easy to offer 50% off when you're ripping off the public with your normal prices.

    • Camera flashes, soap dispensers, salt/pepper grinders, camping lanterns, power monitors, multimeters, radio microphones, headphone amps…

  • +1

For anybody wondering if the Bing Lee Ebay store is an option, the discount code doesn't work there, just tried it. Pity, as the shipping is a little cheaper at $6 per item.

  • This sale almost had me until I realized the starter pack I purchased a year and a half ago hasn't really got it's money back yet either.

  • Good finally some Eneloops after I couldn't find any from the Masters sale.

  • +1

so i guess its not much a deal for all melbournians eh. $9 shipping just killed the deal.

  • +1

I nearly paid full price because you have to manually click on the Review section. Shonky bastards.

    • +1

@skywalka: At checkout it does let you apply the code before paying for it but the payment flow is a little convoluted. I paid through paypal and even after paying in paypal the site still wanted me to confirm the order. Quite easy to miss out

edit: P.S how do I link to the user in the reply?

  • +1

Shipping is crazy on this, lucky there's a bing lee around the corner so I could select pickup.

  • +3

Closest stores to Perth are Wodonga and Albury :~D

Crappy shipping price, no deal for me. Thanks anyway OP!

    • Same here, $18 shipping to Brisbane metro. They must be using a gold leaf coating on their packing boxes.

  • The pack that has the Smart & quick charger inc 4 AA batteries for $59 (before discount) has the bq-cc16 charge. Does anyone know the difference between the bq-cc16 (smart & quick) vs the bq-cc17 (advanced) chargers? The reason that I ask is because Amazon doesnt seem to sell the bq-cc16, but only sells the bq-cc17 (https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-K-KJ17MCA4BA-Individual-Rec…). If the Advanced charger (bq-cc17) is better, its cheaper to buy from amazon.

    *** Nevermind. I found the answer here: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?399381-Te…. I looks like bq-cc17 is a SLOW/SMART charger, where was the bq-cc16 is a QUICK/SMART charger.

For me (since there is no Bing Lee in Brisbane for pickup ), It works out cheaper to buy the Ikea charger for $15 and the Ikea 4pack battery for $8.99. The Ikea charger is a Quick/Smart charger which is comparable to the Panasonic bq-cc16 and the Ikea Battery is 2450mAh which is comparable to the Eneloop Pro. At a $23.99 total for the ikea charger and 4pack battery, its cheaper then getting the $59 panasonic eneloop charger (delivered or pickup).

  • Finally jumped on the bandwagon for Eneloops, bought the Quick Charger + 4 AA batteries, 2 x 4 AA Pro and 3 x AAA Pro batteries. Omg Can't believe it cost $102. I'm hoping it will be a great investment as went to Coles the other day and was shocked how much batteries cost now @-@. T

    • I was about to get some until I read up on Ikea charger n batteries which are as good as eneloops but cheaper. :/

      • Yea am thinking of refunding the batteries but just bought them in case Bing Lee sold out and Ikea are out of stock. But still contemplating as I wouldn't save much only $12.50 which wouldnt probably be transport cost just going to Ikea.

        • I've refunded my Bing Lee Eneloop Pro order and bought a bunch from IKEA. Looks like LADDAs are in stock in most if not all stores.

  • Ordered a smart charger and a packet of AAA, $42 pick-up from Liverpool, NSW. Thanks OP!

  • Guys just remember even the cheap Aldi, Ikea etc are good if all you need is general purpose batteries. If you use the right charger they will last at least 400 cycles which when you pay less than $10 for a pack of 4, it makes sense.

I have rechargeable batteries in torches, night lights, mouses, kids toys and many other items. Have saved heaps in battery costs.

Used Eneloops, Varta, Aldi, Ikea and Duracell, they are all still going strong for me.

  • good deal thanks for the find.

but rip the shipping for perth.

guess i had to go to IKEA AAs

For all those hyperventilating after seeing the 50% off tag, i hope you do know that you can get made in japan eneloops any day at the same prices from ru.nkon.nl. The AAA ones are cheaper in fact.

    https://ru.nkon.nl/rechargeable/aaa-size/8aaa-panasonic-enel…

    • Are these as good as the pro or is the pro battery batteries?

    • Thanks, just bought 16 at the same price Bing Lee would ship 8 to Brisbane.

    • How do you know these are made in japan?

      • Its a well known fact that ru.nkon.nl sell made in japan eneloops. And i have ordered from them just a month back Eneloop Ocean (Limited edition) and it clearly said "Made in Japan" on the back.

Also this is the latest tech.

Bing lee china made stock says 65% after 5 years and the Eneloop Ocean (Limited edition) made in japan says 70% after 10 Years !!!!

        • Thanks for the reply! It seems ru.nkon.nl have recently dropped their prices also.

    • Thanks for sharing. Looks like being shipped from the EU. How long does that normally take to arrive in Australia?

      • +1

        around 2 weeks

        • Pretty good. I was only looking after the pro but ill keep this in mind for future eneloop purchases.

        • I bought my Maha charger from them a few months ago and delivery took about two weeks.

    • Just bought a few of the Fujitsu.
They actually work out just a bit cheaper again!

  • I'll vouch for the pros as I use them on my speedlight SB700… Battery lasted about 1000 shots!

  • Oh Bing should grab the opportunity to supply us Eneloop at good price and become our new love from DS.

  • There is certainly more to eneloops in ozbargain that just a few batteries, but I can never understand. Can anybody demystify eneloops for me?

    • Eneloop is a well-known and trusted brand of LSD (low self-discharge) NiMh battery. Aldi and Ikea also sell LSD NiMh batteries, as do Hobbyking and several other stores.

Currently they don't appear to have stock of the Smart charger, or the AA pro's - not sure of others. Just contacted their chat support and they are 'dealing with an influx of orders' … Ozbargain strikes again!

    • Currently they don't appear to have stock of the Smart charger, or the AA pro's - not sure of others.

Glad that I ordered them as soon as I posted this deal :)

  • Would be good if I could convert all the aaa eneloop batteries I have to aa's as I would have 10x the devices that use aa's.

  • Well done, OP.

  • that bloody $9 postage to VIC. really wanted to get a smart charger to start my foray into eneloops world on the right path.

Thornton NSW have a fair few normal Eneloops and chargers, about 5 or so AAA packs of the pro when I was there. Only 1 pack of pro AA on the shelf, but people have called up and had a few set aside behind counter.
Also thanks OP for posting, needed some AA's for my Gameboy :)

  • According to Keith from Bing Lee
"good afternoon sorry all Panasonic batteries and chargers are sold out thanks"
    and
"no sorry not being replrnished at this stage"
    No Stock, deal over?

  • I have an xtar vc4 charger - anyone have an issue with me using my existing charger?

    • +1

Nope I use them to charge my eneloops atm

  • I may have took the smart charger and pro battery that was allocated to someone else. Went to a Bing Lee store and found the smart charger and pro battery on the shelf. After I took them to the counter the manager instructed the staff to remove them from the shelf immediately because they are sold out and are allocated. They still allowed me to buy them. So to anyone who choose pick up from store, I suggest you go and pick your order soon. The smart charger and pro battery is listed online as sold out.

  • 50% off in store price as well?

I had to come into this thread to see what the mysterious "eneloop" was.

I see the word everywhere. Flying through threads like a crazy Rainbow Parakeet.

"But does it compare to the eneloop" I hear people whisper.

    "Remember the eneloop?" They say.

"What is this creature?" I've wondered more than once.

Is it a big life sized rabbit, like the one in Donnie Darko but cute, bright and fluffy, creating coupons for everyone?

Or, a Jeeves-like robot, like the one in Benchwarmers who makes you a sandwich with the crusts cut off, and dusts your collection of hard earned bargains….

I clicked the link. Fingers shaking, Palm starting to perspire. It's here. The day I meet it. The eneloop-oop-oop-oop-oop.

The thread loads up. Will I read it? No. I'll just click Go To Deal.

I'm ready. I click. It's loads. Scroll down! Quick!

    I see it!!! It's…. It's…

    …. batteries!

Oh, ok. Umm, they must be really really good :)

    Long Live the Eneloop!

  • I have Eneloops and I also have Imedion
and Aldi branded rechargables -the AA are rated at 2100 but my La Crosse charger counts up to 23-2400 mah when slow charged and at $5.99/4 it's less than half the price of half priced eneloops.

  • deal gone. stock exhausted. well done ozbargainers lol.
