I always start an episode of Cosmos. Brilliantly educational, and Neil deGrasse Tyson's voice sooths me to sleep.

too educational, so it makes you sleepy? sounds like my class:)

try the original with Carl Sagan…

Neil deGrasse is a dick though.

I just use my fan every night.

  • White noise apps are great for sleeping during the day but there are plenty of free every day apps as well.

    • i've tried most of the free apps, and a few of the paid ones. so far i've found this the best so far. i have trouble sleeping if i don't use white noise to drown out any of the other sounds of the night.

      • MyNoise is ridiculously good if you like to tweak your experience, enjoy great sound design, and hate loops. Not free. Worth the money for the "everything" pack, in my view.

Masks tinnitus (ringing of the ears)

Supplanting perceived noise with actual noise is an improvement?

    • +1

It's not "perceived noise", it literally is "actual noise" just from a different source. And yes, masking it with something louder or in a similar register is a definite improvement, and something many people rely on just to be able to sleep at night.

      • We use my old iPad 2 with white noise for my 2 year old. She's never been a good sleeper without it.

      • +1

Tinnitus is indeed perceived noise because in vast majority of cases it cannot be measured nor heard by anyone other than the person perceiving it.
Personalised tinnitus suppressors may actually help, but, masking tinnitus with additional noise is simply diverting attention, also known as, placebo.

        • tomaytos tomartos then. the fact that my brain picks it up from my dying ears makes it just as real to me as the sound of my dog barking, it just can't be heard by anyone else because of how localised it is inside my head. doesn't mean it's not real sound though, and I thought that was what you were implying… my bad.

I've been using a few rain/thunderstorm apps for years now to help sleep. They're great.

    Thanks nocure.
Great app, also has timer and alarm features for power naps.
Good for both younger and older..

I want it to be raining everytime I go to sleep

no stupid iphone can reproduce white noise! Perhaps halfway pink noise but why pay for something so deceptive? They should have to pay you!!

Just tune you fm radio to nowhere and same pain!

Of course you could spend a grand on your local yoga centre and get a set of CD's to turn you into a superhero!

Must have IOS10 unfortunately, my ipad mini won't handle that op sys apparently

  • There are better apps out there like Relax Melodies and Relax Oriental, both have in-app purchase but the free version has far more sounds and I think they are easier to use.
