  • Awesome I've been waiting for the wiiu to drop in price :D.. but might wait a little longer

    • +4

      It's out of production….

      • hahah nice timing

      • Still should be loads of stock floating round / cheap used deals.

        • No not really, I'd be suggesting to buy asap, unless you want a SH model.

        • Nintendo stuff doesn't really end up on sale used. There will still be stock floating around, but I think another two months will probably be running dry.

    • +1

Hit Gummy up for one, you often find them like new as many get shelved early on in life.

  • +2

    Nice, console, well worth it.

Alot of things from this system aren't carrying over to the next, so enjoy it while you still can.

You'll be paying for online with the next one, and it isn't backwards compatible.

    • -1

      Nintendo are terrible with that.

"Hey you brought a game in the 90s? Want to buy that again on the Wii? Brought it on the Wii VC but now you own a Wii U, guess you'll have to buy it again. Brought it on the Wii U, guess you'll have to pay for the Switch's monthly fee for old games."

No ethical issues pirating their own stuff imo. They are di#ks.

      • +4

Nintendo are actually one of the best companies for backwards compatibility. The Wii was backwards compatible with the entire Gamecube catalog, the Wii U is backwards compatible with every Wii game, physical and digital, the DS was backwards compatible with every Gameboy Advance game and the 3DS is backwards compatible with every DS game. That's a hell of a lot better than most other companies.

        • -6

The Wii was backwards compatible with the entire Gamecube catalog

Except they removed it in later models to reduce production costs (but charged the same amount to customers). Again, they are di#ks.

        • -1

3DS isn't compatible with all DS games

        • -3

          @Where's_That_Cake: The original one is.

        • @PainToad:
Really just a corporation looking to maximize profit. Same thing was done with DSi (drop Game Boy Advance slot). Similar thing was done with Sony's PSP: dropping wi-fi entirely. Removing stereo speakers, etc. Similar things were done with the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii Mini, etc.

They all do it to lower costs and maximize profit.

        • +2

@Where's_That_Cake: Yes it is. Every single model. In my household we have an original 3DS, a 3DS XL and New 3DS XL and a 2DS; they all play DS cartridges as well as 3DS cartridges. Unless you're referring to the 18 or so games that are exceptions?

        • -1

@mr_me450: yep, that would make it not all games though as I said

        • @Where's_That_Cake: I'm still confused why you seem to think that negates the value of the feature. You must really be into FIFA and Art Academy if the lack of those 18 games make you discount the value of backwards compatibility with nearly 2000 other titles.

        • -4

@mr_me450: well we can just ignore them and pretend your original statement was fact if it helps you sleep tonight :p

        • @Where's_That_Cake: I didn't believe it at first, but a quick Google gave me this: http://au.ign.com/wikis/nintendo-3ds/Incompatible_Games

        • @flaminglemon:

          Earthworm Jim

          NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

      • -6

Lol Sony is the best at that so was Xbox at one stage to bring back sales

Haven't used my wiiu in ages even now that i have the browser xploit if only it was like the ps3 & xbox360

      • Was refering to paying for online multiplayer mostly which will now cost.

From what i recall, games purchased from the Wii VC were able to be transferred directly to the Wii U's Wii emulator. To buy on the Wii u store version was discounted.

Perhaps their new account system will register across games and systems, then again maybe they'll discount digital. Not sure of the infrastructure.

They've been quite good with physical backwards compatible games, however the next system is rumored to have some free downloads of already purchased physical wii u games similar to Xbox One.

They've done a far better job of supporting backwards compatibility then Xbox, Playstation even without GC. Things might change now due to the new design.

Legit Nintendo switch coming out in a few months for $100 more. Wait a minute and get it cheaper.

    • +1

      rrp is $469 at eb

would be under $400 come xmas

    • Wait several years and get it for a song. Along with far cheaper games (let alone a far bigger assortment of games).

  • +9

This seems so expensive to me. Recently we had so many deals for PS4/XB1 at about this price and even cheaper, and this console is to be superseded in 6 weeks and it's still at this price? Just seems too dear tbh

    • +12

      nintendo tax

you pay more for less performance, less storage, less games

      • +1

judging by the Switch RRP, that seems a fair assessment haha.. dont forget the peripheral costs for that thing.. sheesh

      • Don't forget the Australian tax as well..It's the reverse of the good guys slogan.. pay more and get less. Sheesh,, $469 for the switch.

        • I actually think that's a reasonable rrp

        • +4

It's $300 US, which is about $400 AU. Add GST, shipping, most US states have sales tax

          Seems pretty fair actually.

        • Exchange and GST with 28 degrees out it at $445… $469 is pretty ok. $449 would of been better.

        • +1

@Merlict: Agreed. There's even a thread on Neogaf dedicated to complaining about the Australian price of the Switch. $470 is a completely reasonable price given the US price.

        • +5

Yep and considering 3 of the biggest games are just Wii U Remakes like Splatoon 2, Mariokart 8 Deluxe & Zelda it's no way worth it at this time and by the looks of the games coming won't ever be, not for $469 anyway! I think on launch it's worth no more than $350 with the console on it's own with no games.

        • +2

Everytime someone forgets to factor in sales tax and exchange rate when bitching but US pricing of stuff. SMH.

        • +2

@TRENT86: Only one of those is a remake. Splatoon 2 is a new game, Zelda is releasing simultaneously on both consoles (just as many games release simultaneously on PS3/PS4, 360/XB1). Mario Kart is a re-release, but comes with all DLC + extra modes (just like Last of Us, Uncharted, Bioshock, Tomb Raider, etc, etc for PS4/XB1). Don't really see what the problem is.

        • but it is know that Sony and Microsoft take less money from Australians to be competitive after the initial rush from early adopters. I beleive Nintendo will do this to a lesser degree too.

          I mean a plain PS4 is like $349? That's a very low $249 us?

        • +1

@TRENT86: 1 game is a remake. I guess you can argue for Zelda but to say Splatoon 2 is a remake is straight out incorrect

        • +1

@mr_me450: well PS4 was hammered throughout for releasing remasters so why not WiiU2?

        • +1

@Dany34: From what I have read Splatoon sounds too much like the Wii U Version with minimal changes/Extras

        • @mr_me450: The price

        • -1

@TRENT86: Can you recommend a tablet device with console graphical power and physical controller attachment features that can be found cheaper?

        • +1

@mr_me450: this is not console graphical power, not even remotely close my furry lil friend

        • @mr_me450:
The Nvidia Shield is worth a look. Specced better than Switch in several areas, though of course not exactly the same thing.

        • +1

@Iggemo: Of course it is, certainly not as powerful as the PS4 or XB1 but more powerful than the PS3, 360 and Wii U. That's amazing technology for a handheld. Comparing the price of a standalone portable console and a console that needs to be connected to power and a TV is like comparing desktop PCs to notebooks; of course the desktop can be bought cheaper and is more powerful, it's all economics of scale. The Switch price point seems appropriate for what it's offering.

        • +1

@cheepwun: Thanks, I like the look of the Shield but it's not a great deal cheaper and of course lacks the Nintendo exclusives. I don't think what Nintendo is charging is unreasonable. Not a bargain either, but still appropriate for what it is at launch.

        • @TRENT86:

Agreed. Graphically it's identical. They removed a few weapons and replaced them with a few others. Slap a '2' on the title and release it at $99.

  • +3

definitely not a deal with the wii switch coming out. there was one time when wii u was in clearance a year back or so , it was less than $200

    • -4

Wii Switch…You just invented a console.

    • Enjoy waiting for games to play on the Switch. The Wii doesn't exactly have the biggest library but they are available now & will likely cost far less than any Switch release, none of which have been bundled with the console, from what I have been hearing.

So enjoy paying the outlandish sums for those new Switch games. No bundles = pay for your own games after paying for the unit. It all adds up…

  • +1

The Wii u I suspect shall be quite the collectors item in the future.
    The last true Nintendo console.

    • bought.

    • +1

Well that's a load of nonsense.

    • -3

Console collectors items died with the analogue age. Never again.

      • That's ridiculous. Many games from the current and previous generations are already considered collector's items, particularly anything Nintendo. Gamecube still sell for over $150 even though you can pick up a Wii with Gamecube capability for about $50, Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door goes for about $130, even Metroid Trilogy for Wii still sells for about $100 even though you can buy it digitally on Wii U for $20. As more time passes even the PS3 and 360 will become collectors items given their success and the nostalgia that will go with them in another 20 years or so.

      • +1

Console collectors items died with the analogue age. Never again.

Try to find cheap Gamecube games now. Good luck, especially the good ones like Mario Kart Double Dash!! New Wiis are high priced, and so will PS3 soon and Xbox 360. Given enough years and a largely uninterested "been there, done that" public, the things start to get rare and people chase nostalgia. Never fails. Especially with the 'market failure' 13-million selling Wii U.

New, unused items get prices in the stratosphere.
With enough time (and market rarity) all consoles go up. As do classic games.

    • collecting dust or garbage yes.

  • +4

    Still too expensive.

  • +4

Glad that I bought the Mario Kart 8 bundle for $178 at Kmart years ago but quite pissed Nintendo delayed releasing Zelda breath of the wild for 2 god damn years. Unless I see another new Zelda game (not the supposed to be 2 years old breath of the wild) for Switch I will not buy another Nintendo console ever again.

  • Was about to buy on behalf of the girlfriend, but have decided to wait for more appealing deals. We definitely aren't looking to get the switch.

  • +1

    and still way too overpriced.

  • Considering the Wii u Mario maker bundle was $300 at Target mid last year I don't think this is a great deal. Basically paying $30 extra for art academy..

    • I think there will be better deals for sure.

  • With the system a game piracy heaven right now I don't think these will get cheap real quick as there will be plenty of people out for them. If Nintendo finally releases a firmware update that stops the pirating these will become even more popular, which may very well happen with the new Zelda as that is a big game for them.

  • Make a traditional Pokémon game for this (like.the handheld games) and watch them fly off the shelves

Edit. This was meant for a reply re: Nintendo Switch and whether to get one.

No idea how it ended here. I'll just see myself out.
