Highlander HD Digital Set-Top Box - $39.95 + $9.95 Shipping

360

This seems pretty cheap for a HD set-top box, I got mine not so long back for $40 but it wasn't a HD!

You could also use this voucher to get $10 off, if you're a new customer…

  • Nice price. Even had USB recording as well.

I suspect with composite cables I can connect this to a CRT TV? I have a really old style television with only 1 yellow and 1 white connection (it's only got a mono speaker).

    • I saw similar one at Crazy clarks few months ago (Highlander) advertised with USB recording/timeshift, but unable to get that working (ntfs/fat32 format). Ended up returning to them.

This one might also be same as comments on whirlpool - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/141… - not confirms, worst still, dealsdirect link is not working anymore on the forum post.

Nonthless, good for HD settopbox under 40$ (with 10$ paypal offers).

    There can be only one.

  • The description says it supports H264. Does that mean it plays MKV files too?

    • H264 is just a video compression method, it doesn't mean the STB will support the MKV container format.

I believe this only supports MPEG-4, AVI (probably) and DIVX files. Its not exactly a media player, it's a recording STB with basic video playback features tacked onto it.

      • Cool, thanks.
I had a friend just buy an Akai equivalent of this product for $100 at Kmart.
This is a pretty sweet deal.

      • yes, it does support mkv. Its an awesome media player. Oh, it does not play old Divx3 files. I really like this STB. Unfortunately I just paid $69 for it last week from deals direct!!! I'm so sad.

Record function is not great though. It doesn't compress or have options … so chews up heaps of drive space.

        • Hi Popo, doesn't this machine play .rmvb?

          • @Future Kids: No it does not play real media.
It records in pvr format. NOT mkv!! I suspect it does NOT compress!

        • Wow! $40 for a PVR STB that plays MKV?
Or do you mean it records as MKV?

          • @ywpn: That's what I thought, no way a cheapie STB can record or even playback in MKV format.

If it could… well I'd eat my hat.

            • @scrimshaw: Just bought it. I hope Popo is right.
I'll let you know how it goes.

              • @ywpn: Yes, it plays MKV files.
                1280 x 688 – h.264 video : OK (2 gig movie)
                1280 x 720 – h.264 video : OK

            • @scrimshaw: You should at least eat half of your hat. I just got mine.
It plays MKV….but it's missing sound. I've only tried 1 file but it's a show I watch often. Perhaps I have to tinker with it a bit more or get a firmware update.

              • @ywpn: Audio works with MKV. It was only that 1 file that was messed up.

  • It's the quickening…
One good thing with ABC News being HD only is that the SD only market will disappear, and HD STB's will drop in price very quickly!

  • v.good deal, just ordered one $39.95, they've debited my paypal a/c so we'll see if they reneg.

    • LOL… why would they reneg?

  • Got one… I hope.
I made a new account and grabbed the PPdeals code.
Sure hope my 'friend' also lives at the same address didn't mess it up for me //
Mostly just want to see ABC news24.
    Good deals thx.

  • It says firmware upgradeable. Is there actually a website for Highlander products where we can check for firmware updates and support? I did a web search and was unable to find one.

    • I emailed them [email protected] and they tell me the latest is on the box. What I really wanted was to get the firmware off my 2826 and put it on my 2816! (Yes, I bought both - both has same hardware and remote is interchangeable).

      • I noticed the two but quickly reading the specs couldn't see the difference.
What is it? 2816 the older model?

        • Exactly the same except 2826 can record.

  • Thanks for this, I just pick one up with the $10 off coupon.

    • That would make it $39.95 with free shipping. or 29.95 + 9.95 shipping.

Good deal Migh grab one to update the slow old sd set top box on my parents bedroom tv.

      • You showing off your math skills? ;)

        • Just ordered one and got it for $39.90 using the discount coupon. Thanks for posting the discount coupon.

        • -1

          maths

  • Ordered one using the Paypal coupon, seems to have gone through OK. I just wanted this for the TV in the spare bedroom, cheaper than buying a digital TV.

Thanks Hickman120 for posting the deal and coupon info!

  • got one :D thanks a bunch

  • Oh well! Got one before seeing this post so I forgot to use $10 off voucher. T___T

    You're about a day late…

Has anyone got a shipping notification yet?

  • Very quick delivery. Ordered late Tuesday afternoon Just finished installing the STB. One thing I noticed is that when I go to system information, the STB is telling me that I have a model DH-2816. When I actually have a DH-2826. Although all the usb functions are accessible in the menus. Anybody else notice this on there DH-2826?

  • Mine arrived this morning. Ordered 2 days ago ago after 5.30pm - will set it up later this arvo.

edit: Set up was a breeze and painless. UI is pretty decent, haven't tried recording and playing from USB yet.

Mine arrived today as well. Tested it with a variety of formats, mp3, mp4, JPEG, AVI, DIVX and even subtitled MKV works as well. Best buy for $40 bucks! Totally recommend this as a STB considering how many codecs it supports.

I'm kind of peeved that there's no yellow text option for subtitles, as the preset colours (white/black, dark blue, dark green, dark red) are extremely hard to read.

A did a quick little test with it's PVR capabilities and can say I'm quite impressed with it, considering the low price.

Tested out recording on 720p resolution with a Sandisk Cruzer Blade memory stick, 1 minute of footage weighed around 76.4 megabytes. The recording format was in a .TS container format using MPEG2 encoding, so you can easily play it on your computer if you want to.
Timeshifting also worked like a charm.

Also another odd thing I noticed was the remote control and packaging of the box reads "DH-2826" as the model number but the machine identifies itself as DH-2816.

    • Noticed as well the incorrect id number in the system id section.

The other bug is the on screen help tells you to press the Yellow and Blue button to display the next and previous page of the EPG. When actually you need to press the Red and Green button. I thought this was busted when it didn't work at first untill I worked out the buttons were labeled incorrectly and found the correct buttons.

The PVR functions are still working, so I am guessing we do have the HD-2826 as from all reports the HD-2826 is identical to the HD-2816, just with added PVR function.

  • Deals Direct have this back in stock for $59.95 + $9.95 shipping, and the “PAYPALDEALS” $10 coupon still works, so you get it for $59.90 delivered. I just bought one. Shame I missed the $40 deal, but still ok for $60, judging by the user reviews.
