That's a great price for that phone.

  • will it work with Kogan

    • +11

      IT IS UNLOCKED!!!!

      😄
Works with Any carrier except Yatango mobile LOL(They are defunct)

      • +17

I think he meant if the phone and Ruslan Kogan can work in the same team.

  • +4

Question: did it come in a Vodafone prepaid packaging (red outer box) ?

If it did then you may have been lucky it was unlocked cause I got a couple of these when they were recently $159 and one was locked and one wasn't.
    .
The prepaid one is generally locked but not always so it's luck of the draw I think.

My understanding as explained to me is that the vodalfone logistics centre sometimes puts the odd unlocked unit in the prepaid packaging but generally you can consider a unit sold as "prepaid" in the red outer packaging as locked.

$75 to get Vodafone to unlock if you have had device less than 6 months.

    • +2

      Hmm.
I talked to a store rep today(As mentioned in the post)
He never said anything about there being two streams of activation…
      He pointed me here
And said it shouldn't be locked.
Maybe they changed the rules since you bought the phone?
Because i remember buying a phone only to find out after 5 years of it being unopened that it is unlocked even though i bought it locked.

      • +1

Yeah that link is where I went to unlock my device when I got it.
I was able to get Vodafone to waive the $75 fee on my second unit in the end.

Vodafone has always had postpaid and prepaid designated devices when they sell one product in both streams.

A device designated as prepaid is sold locked, however if for example a product proves more popular as prepaid then they substitute prepaid devices with postpaid. The red outerpaging is applied in the logistics warehouse. So I guess this phone has proven to be more popular as a prepaid than a postpaid one.
Source: Vodafone sales support in Tasmania when I was trying to get mine unlocked)

On a side note I notice the units sold by Vodafone direct now only come with a $30 starter pack as opposed to $40 which mine came with when I got them. (Maybe the target stock is the left overs from last sale that Vodafone themselves ran, device was $159 then)

      • +5

I can guarantee it is FREE to unlock directly from Vodafone.
Source: I bought this identical phone, identical deal at Target just last week. Unlocking via Voda website cost me zilch.

        • +1

Yep I also bought one today from Target and got the unlock code from the Vodafone website for nothing.

        • +1

I can confirm the three I checked at my local target by asking for the box and typing the imei into the voda website were $75 to unlock.
I think as I have said it depends on the unit.
I have seen them unlocked and locked so to post and say they are all free to unlock is not correct.

      • +1

Guys ive got both good news and bad news.

the good new is no matter what version is the XA in Target(REV1 or REV2),unlocking is possible.
source:Just bought a REV1 two hours ago from Target Miranda, and i successfully applied for the unlock code from vodafone.

        Bad news is,
        ,
        ,
        ,
Most of the XAs are sold out,at least in NSW.Iv checked the Target at Bondi,Hurstville,Burwood, and found the last one in Miranda.

  • +2

If it is locked then just call them and let them know you are heading overseas for a holiday and need the phone unlocked so you can purchase a SIM card in whatever country you decide to tell them.
They should unlock it for free as I remember doing this many years ago.

    • +2

They aren't so happy with this approach nowadays… particularly when everyone was trying to get their Huawei Y6's unlocked prior to Xmas.

      • +3

The laws are now governed by happiness.

        • +1

          Is that you, Bill Shorten!?

  • What's its usual price?

    • over $200.

      • $229 on special just before christmas. Usual retail price is $299.

I got one for my daughter for christmas… she dropped it, and Sony wants $249 to replace the screen. So this deal will be perfect…

        • +3

It entertains me greatly that the screen is worth more than the phone.

        • @pin4e: normally i'd agree but on the receiving end of such idiocy, it's infuriating!

        • +2

          @pin4e:
To be fair they're probably charging $100 labour in that $249 quote.

    • Should ask to add in Title as well…

    • Thanks added.

    • "..or a Xperia Z5 Premium purchased from an Australian operator or retailer between 23rd June, 2016 and 31st March, 2017, and have activated your device and downloaded the 12 Movies Voucher Code from Xperia Lounge app between 23rd June, 2016 and 31st January, 2017."

As we only bought the phone in March 2017, is it too late to download '12 Movies Voucher Code' as it is required to be downloaded before 31 Jan 2017?

  • These are great for someone with small hands - they are really narrow for a 5" screen phone - 66.8mm

  • Need a new Android phone for work and my S5 is going to cost at least $200 to fix. Hmm.

    • +4

Just a heads up. I own an Xperia E4G, and I was warned by an owner of a Xperia Z not to get it. My 'Xperience' so far:

Battery is not great, just over a day at best (yet it was a selling feature)
Camera focus delay is annoying (particularly in dim light).
Backup software doesn't work (fails at 50%, just google Xperia backup 50% to see how much Sony cares about it).
There is an update out there for it, but the software says it's up to date. Sony customer care…don't care.
Screen is way too bright on the dimmest screen at night (I installed night screen app).
Some apps just don't work (Shake and win app shake feature doesn't work..Ozbargain staple app).

What I do like - It's smooth to use initially (except for camera).. but it needs to be restarted a couple of time a day to keep it smooth.

Your call, but I'd advise borrowing a Sony first for a couple of days.

      • +3

Purchased this Sony XA and have become very disappointed.
        1. Android 6 and sd memory. One feature of Marshmellow was to replace internal memory with your SD card so you have continuous memory. Sony DISABLED this feature on this fone!
        2. Bloatware. I estimate apx 6 GB of bloatware on the Sony XA.
        3. Battery. Agreed extremely poor performance and well documented on many forums. I can see users taping a battery bank to their fone "somewhat like" the taping of magazines on an assult rifle. You have to ask "What is this fone doing to chew up the battery?"
At the time I thought more of the $ savings, when I should have undertaken due diligence.
These comments are of course IMHO.

    • look at other chinese options.
so much more bang for buck.
      leeco and xiaomi for example

      • +1

wouldnt say much more bang, plus they look tacky at the least the sony looks good.

        • +1

Regarding the bang. 720 screen to 1080 or 2k. Processor to sd820 or sd650. Ram to 3-6gb. Flash from 16gb to 64gb. Battery from 2*00 mah to 3200-4100mah.

I'd say that's significantly better bang. Throw in things like fast charge and finger print scanners and I'd question what you even looked.

Looks wise, they're quite well made, and much better in hand that cheap domestic options. I haven't held this one, so won't compare the two, but would certainly refute your claim about them looking tacky. Have a look at the xiaomi mi mix.

There's some really good examples coming through.

  • is this better than redmi note 3 pro?

    • i dont think so

    • -2

Better built probably and more compact, but a slower CPU.

      • +2

        Better built probably

says the person who has clearly never physically held a Redmi Note 3 Pro…

The only way it could be better is if you think a 5" 720p screen is better cause you have small hands, or possibly if the camera is markedly better (which is unlikely I think in this price bracket device)

        • +4

I agree. The latest Redmis have great build quality. I received a $206 Redmi Mote 4 Prime yesterday - it's well built and looks and feels like a quality item

        • @R4: please do share ur exp with the phone and its camera etc. is it global variant? wer did u buy from?

        • +1

@bkoolrocks: No experience of the phone as it's a birthday gift for my son. It's the Grey, Global version bought off Aliexpress

        • +2

@R4: ok, i am also looking at RN but not sure if i shud go with 3 or 4 as most ppl here refer to 3. Will wait for the Sale from ali which starts next week. thanks for your response

        • Go 4, I have it and its amazing, really clear resolution (and quick), solid camera, bought of xiaomi store aliexpress 210 with dhl fast shipping

        • +2

          @bkoolrocks:
The "problem" with the RN4 is that it runs a Mediatek chipset which means you're stuck with MIUI for life.
RN3P uses a Qualcomm Chipset which means that Developers can and have developed many Custom ROM's and subsequently allow users to extract the best performance and feature set out of the hardware.
If you are never going to flash a Custom ROM go with the RN4.

  • +3

Price is decent, +1 for effort.

    • Yes, excellent description, thanks!

  • All good. Except there's no official confirmation its unlocked out-of-the-box.

    • +11

      👌Official Confirmation

      Here you go…

    • Some people are saying they coming up free to unlock
I have not yet come across one at my local targets that were free.

I bought two some months ago. One was free one had a charge.

  • Shame about the battery. Seems like good specs for the price otherwise. Camera doesn't sound great either for those of us with unsteady hands, haha.

    • +2

I just tried one. Camera is decent enough. And apparently with latest updates, battery is decent. Worth a gamble at that price I reckon.

I'll test it thoroughly and if it's not good enough to be a present, I'll keep it as a spare for whenever my Z3 dies and I'm between phones.

Unlocking prepaid phones can be hit and miss, depends on stock and luck/bad luck.

I also purchased this phone a few months back from the first Target deal, tried the official Vodafone unlock site, no luck. Came back maybe six weeks later and Bam, free unlock.

Mine was in a White Xperia box with Red and White Vodafone Prepaid sleeve over it containing a Bonus $30 Prepaid starter pack printed on sleeve.

Interested in knowing how long that battery actually lasts. It's fairly low capacity.

    • many complaints on GSMArena customer review section about battery drain & not lasting more than a day

    • +1

      Bought one last week.
The mobile data seems to chew up a fair bit of battery. With mobile data turned off, it'll last 3 days easy. It has something called "Stamina Mode" which I guess helps with battery drain.
When mobile data is on, it'll last from full to empty maybe 2 days.

      But YMMV based on usage.

  • +1

Too bad it's not waterproof. Otherwise, would make a great fitness tracker

    • +3

how much do you sweat that you need it to be water proof?

      • +1

Haha good point. I guess for the peace of mind.

BTW, ziplock bags work really well. Touch screen still usable.

      • swimming

        • @clse945111:

          Heavy rain possibly?

  • +2

It is a awesome deal. I own the XA Ultra and I can tell you it is a beautiful crafted phone, same quality as those over a grand. Specs wise, isn't great as it is a budget phone but many people don't play latest graphic hungry games won't need to worry.
Get it without hesitation if you can find one.

  • +1

I got the unlock code free for the handset I bought from Target. Bought it a couple of days before the price dropped to $169.
This was via the Vodafone unlock site.

    • how long does your battery last ?

      • +1

Seems OK so far. I'm not a heavy user though. Easily get through a whole day. And I charge it every night.

I think I've noticed a couple times at the end of the day it's around 30% battery left.

I also flashed the latest aussie generic Sony rom to it which was meant to improve battery. The version installed from the box has the android security patch from last may or something like that.

        • How did you do that?
Can I have a semi detailed explanation?
          Thanks

  • Unlock for free here https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/

    • +1

      doesn't always work

      • Oh okay. I got this same model from the post office and it worked for me.

        • see comment above about the Huawei Y6 by battler

could you tell us how the battery life is for you ?

        • @rusty2k: I am not the typical user. No data on my plan. Mine lasts about five days with minimal use.

  • Must resist.

If it drops further I would get one (plus a mount) just for remote play and silly mobile games…

    • Doesn't support remote play

    • +2

Every now and then when PS4 gets a new firmware, this takes a little bit to get an update, but I've used this on my Nexus 5 for years. Honestly gets a better experience than either my Vita 1000 or the missus' 2000 ever got.

Hooking up a controller can be an (profanity) sometimes, but what I do is just leave the controller synced to the PS4 for a more direct connection to eliminate as much lag as possible, and just sign the phone into a dummy account, works a charm.

Got a phone clamp thing from eBay like a year and a half back for it too, was a buck fifty or so, works fine and stretches to your phone size, also included a 2 way micro USB cord to plug the controller into the phone with the app, but it disconnected a bit too much for me (could be an older connector on my phone playing up, it's a few years old and won't connect to my computer anymore) so I just use the method explained above.

Also the app offers touch controls, which are… interesting. Better than nothing if you have no controller or whatever.

Anyway, the app works better than the official Vita remote play, so it can't be too bad honestly.

Edit: Holy shit, I got so caught up in that I forgot to paste the link, here dude https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/ps4-remo…

Further edit: Also, I've used my Moga mobile controller on the app and it actually works, so if you have a cool controller for your phone via Bluetooth or USB that isn't supported on the PS4, this can be used as a means to sneak it on in, like how when the PS TV first came out I was using a DualShock 3 to play PS4 games just because I could.

      • Thanks for the detailed write up.

  • Band 28?

    • Yeah.
      Band 38too!

  • I bought one from Vodafone on clearance… Initially it said it was locked but vodafone supplier the unlock code free of charge because it wasn't meant to be locked according to the CSR…

    SoC: mt6755 (aka Helio P10)
    GPU: Mali-T860 MP2 @ 700 MHz https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaTek GFLOPS
    GFLOPS: 47.6 http://kyokojap.myweb.hinet.net/gpu_gflops/ or https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mali_(GPU) (2 core at 23.8 each)

The recent huawei Y6 elite has 40 GFLOPS and the same resolution, and costs much less.

Though this phone may be much better in other ways, e.g. it has OTG USB.

  • +3

I got one of these about a week ago (Price has remained the same since at $169)

A bit speedier than I expected on the Mediatek chipset although noticeable lag when using heavy social media apps e.g. Snapchat
I've found battery life to be far below acceptable. Having said that I'm probably closer to the heavier user end of the spectrum. It does drop a fair bit even on standby mode which I really wasn't happy about. Otherwise the camera sensors (both front and back), button feedback and tactility, earpiece volume and microphone seemed to perform at an acceptable level for the price.

Loudspeaker was a bit louder than I expected though

For the price, it includes all basic accessories including the charger plug, USB cable and headphones which I think is very good.
From my knowledge, I don't think it is a fast charger, but you'd definitely benefit from getting one.

Can confirm it was free to unlock via Vodafone Unlock on their website. A code is generated which you enter into the phone after inserting a different provider's SIM card.

    • Are you running Android 6.0? Battery life on my Z2 has gone to **** since the update, and background drain is quite high (have tried factory resetting also), but when using Stamina mode (in 6.0 it's essentially just Android's built in battery saver renamed), my SOT can almost double over the course of a day on a full charge.

      • With the impending release of 7.0 and daydream i doubt if battery will be an issue?
By the way what is a SOT?
