Update
Sega is bringing a collection of its finest retro video games to iOS and Android devices via a new service called Sega Forever. Unlike its past mobile releases—which include the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Football Manager Mobile—the entire Sega Forever line-up is free-to-play and supported by ads. Players can optionally remove the ads via an in-app purchase for £2 (~$2.50).

There are five games in the Sega Forever launch line-up, consisting of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, RPG Phantasy Star II, beat 'em up Comix Zone, platformer Kid Chameleon, and the original Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) pack-in game Altered Beast. An iOS and Android version of the classic Dreamcast game Crazy Taxi launched in May, which is also free-to-play. Additional games are promised to launch every two weeks.

    Ahh the memories…. owwooooo

I'm not sure that the word "legendary" accurately describes the game 😀

I felt it was a terrible and monotonous game, and the only reason many have unfortunately played it was because Sega bundled it with the Mega Drive console.

But hey, nostalgia overrides common sense 😉

Totally agree - it was never a good game they just shifted a lot of copies of it

For years, all the trade-in ads included the phrase "we do not accept Altered Beast" :)

      • Interesting perspective. If its free i might have to test that. Lol.

I can think of a few other games that have a similar issue from earlier eras.

got the app but it says it can either go ad-supported for free, or you can pay for the app.

    Power up!
Edit free on android market also

Hmm I don't think this is actually free. Sega (iPhone autocorrected that to swag lol) have launched or relaunched a bunch of their games as free with ads, or you can pay to remove the ads. Previous owners of the paid versions get the ads removed automatically.

  • BEAST MODE!

A few other games and new games monthly :)

    • I read somewhere that you pay about $2 for no ads. Thank you, SEGA!

  • I just had a little orgasm.

this was my first game i bought the megadrive. i returned it the very next day and got Ghosts n ghouls. lol

    • Loved ghouls and ghosts!

      • hey what about when the super nintendo version was better? haha

  • Yep they're switching to freemium model. Tried Altered Beasts and although nostalgic the music stuttered on my iPad Pro which is inexcusable for such an old game.

  • What a stuttery mess of a game. Runs perfectly fine on Retroarch but a mess when made by the vendor?

    • +1

Apparently Sega approached RetroArch devs with a wonderful licensing deal which involved hiding every trace of it being an emulator presumably so people wouldn't find out about emulators.

When RetroArch said go away they released terrible ports of their games :D

      • What a real shame, as some of those 90s Sega titles are excellent.

  • WIIIIIIISE FWOM YOUR GWAAAAAVE!

    • Will Wheaton. Is that you?

  • Just a heads up: apparently all of the new Sega re releases run badly due to Sega being a dumbo and re writing the games in Unity which has resulted in uneven 45fps gameplay due to frames being dropped.
