Telecube NBN - 100/40 1TB (Plus Bonus 5TB Offpeak) $69/Mth No Contract

790

Saw this offer on Whirlpool. Looks like a decent deal. I'm already on the Aussie Broadband deal and have no complaints.

NOTE Top link won't work until you sign up - http://www.telecube.com.au/signup and are logged into your Telecube account. Sign up is just name, mobile and email (no credit card details yet). Once that is done click the link. They seem to be active on Whirlpool with positive feedback.

Also just want to add that if your NBN type is HFC (you can check here you would want to try and keep your existing internet connection and ONLY cancel it after you are happy with your new NBN connection. HFC activations can take 30mins, but some can take weeks and this is due to issues at NBN's end so its good to have the old connection as backup. The backup won't work however if you are going with the same internet provider so I'm assuming you are not already with Telecube. Check it out as an option if you are looking at NBN currently.

Conditions and inclusions

  • Hmmm a charge for connection and static IP seems still pretty good deal atm

  • +2

No unlimted quota plans so good chance of reasonable performance.

    • +2

Yeah, they're OK now that their backhaul issues are being sorted out.
I jumped from Aussie a few months ago cause the pricing was too good..
I'm paying $54/month on 50/20 for 500Gb, Unmetered Netflix and Unlimited Offpeak. Maxing out my lame-ass, dodgy copper, FTTN connection at 30/10 no matter the time of day.

(but restricted to 5Gb/hr during peak hours and 50Gb max per day… for my usage it's essentially unlimited)

      • So if you pay for a 100/40 or 50/20 planb, but they actually can't deliver it, it's your bad luck?

with your FTTN, is FTTP an option (if so how much?)

        • I think they legally need to charge to the closet plan for your actual achievable speeds and anybody can change from a FTTN to FTTP connection. Must have a already active FTTN connection to apply for it which is I think a $750 fee to make a plan and the following cost to run the fiber depending on length and build costs to get there is well into the thousands probably starting at close to 5k

        • +10

So if you pay for a 100/40 or 50/20 plan, but they actually can't deliver it, it's your bad luck?

Precisely… this is the NBN "we" voted for.
I've replaced my Internal phone line just to squeeze out this much extra too.
It's precisely for this reason that people who had an understanding about this technology were so vehmently opposed to it before the election of Abbott..
Not everyone will have this experience, but many will. My line length is only 800m too, there are pople in my neighborhood on 1000m lines who will be lucky to get 25/5.

with your FTTN, is FTTP an option (if so how much?)

Upgrading from FttN to FttP isn't really an option.. NBN charge a quote fee of $400 (I think) and those few who have been through the process have been quoted tens of thousands of dollars.
NBN charge the full cost of digging up the streets to lay fibre to your home from the nearest Fibre Distribution Hub - which could be kilometres away. then reserve the right to share your cable with others along the route if they choose to upgrade. NBN even pinky promises to pay you back part of your initial costs if that ever happens.

        • +3

          @Dezeption:

I've not yet seen a NBN Technology Choice quote on the Whirlpool thread of less than 10k. (not that I watch it all that closely)
And it's a stretch to call it an upgrade… more like a completely new build, bypassing the node entirely.

        • @scubacoles:

Not everyone will have this experience, but many will. My line length is only 800m too, there are pople in my neighborhood on 1000m lines who will be lucky to get 25/5.

My folks have been on FTTN since last year (small country town) and they're on a 25/5 plan, couldn't get mum to figure out what numbers to tell me what their actual sync speed is for a while and ended up finding out they're only syncing at 17Mbps.. they were syncing at 14Mbps on their old ADSL2+ connection.

Have no idea where their NBN pillar/Node is as I haven't been down there in ages, but seems it's not close at all. And don't see that improving any time soon unless it improves remarkably when the cohabitation period (which I doubt).

Only advantage for them is they're no longer paying stupid amounts cause they were on a Telstra only exchange, so there is a silver lining somewhat.

        • @scubacoles: There is a thread on WP about FTTN/HFC technology switches to FTTH. It makes for depressing reading. Looks like $660 for the initial application.

        • @scubacoles: Link to thread? I had a quick look but can't seem to find it.

Looks like I'm very much not alone….
35% of FttN connections (not including the Service Class Zero - ie. the people in NBN activated areas who can't connect to NBN) are incapable of achieving 50mbps.
And due to the nature of SC0 premises, there's a VERY good chance that far more than 35% of the 100,000 SC0 premises will be unable to receive more than 50mbps if/when they're eventually rectified.

      • I've read some people have greatly improved their speeds by removing old superfluous phone sockets, to get back to one socket.

        • Yep, FTTN signals aren't like ADSL, so having additional phone ports in the house causes noise on the line that can affect stability and sync speed. There is again a WP thread on this very topic. Results vary quite wildly.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2598431

        • +1

I did this.. My sync rate went from 35/13 to 49/16, but then mysteriously plummeted a few months later back to 30/10 where I'm stuck now.
NBN don't care cause I'm still syncing at above 25/5 which "is all I'll ever need".

      • How are you paying so little?

      • I was 100% signing on for Telecube until they started having routing issues, speed issues, and introduced CGNAT as a default for connections. Some of these problems might be addressed now, but it was enough to keep me away from them and I'm with ABB now. Willing to pay extra for a public IP, no routing issues, and stability.

        • +2

Dual stack CGNAT wasn't really a problem in my experience… And you can manually turn on Dynamic IP for no charge now in your account settings, so it's completely not a problem now.
Plus, we've all got to make the jump to IPv6 at some stage.

        • @scubacoles: For me CGNAT breaks a bunch of stuff, though 99% of people won't have any issue with CGNAT. They had work arounds in place like a VPN or you had to contact their support guys and try to justify a public IP. Its good they've turned on dynamic public IP, but I'm pretty happy with Aussie Broadband now (one of those situations where you just move on and settle). I hope Telecube succeed, they're one of the good ones on WP. The still persisting routing issues thread is still something that stops me considering them.

  • With existing customers, I think you can change your current plan to this, but they want you to pay $99 connection fee.
It happened to me last time when I switched over to their new deal with new price. Not sure if I wanted to do it again. :(

    I'm on 50/20 with unlimited off-peak but paying $80 a month.

    • can you get 100/40? they negotiate your current plan down to that price even at 50/20? :)

      • That's the thing Scud. If I wanted to change the speed only, they would just apply the normal monthly fee which is $100 plus additional fee for changing speed. But if I wanted to be on the special deal for $69 a month, I'll have to pay installation fee $100 plus $69 monthly fee. It's the installation fee which I would have to pay that I have a problem with. That's why I can't be bothered anymore and just keep paying $80 for 50/20 connection until another ISP offers a better deal.

        • But you'd recoup the $100 in under 10 months. If you're otherwise happy why not?

  • +1

Outages have dropped down to a lot less since they've moved to ABB away from Vocus. That was a month long hell of 10KB/s nights with no fixes and several outages.

Core router maintenance or CPU issues seem to happen pretty frequently, though - if you need a reliable connection, probably wait out a little longer. They're doing a good job with minimising congestion by placing limits on us old users during the Netflix hours (5gb an hour) and daily limits of 50GB (for my plan, anyway), but these new plans do not have these limits, so no need to worry too much.

Note that they chopped and changed their plan details a lot in the early months of the other offer - and we wore the brunt of losing out on features, downgrades, higher limits, etc. Again, this plan seems to have been consistent since they announced it with no changes so far.

I have nothing but good things to say about Telecube now they're on the Wideband link.

    • +1

John was always good & honest when I used their VOIP. You don't mind if things go pearshaped, because you knew he was onto it & didn't BS about whether the issue was your end or his.

      What's your OS speeds like?

      • I'm limited by my line speed really. 3.6MB/s anywhere in the world.
Gaming seems fine, I don't check my ping, so long as I don't get lag!

John/Louis are really down to Earth and are good honest people.

They've never advertised their services as 'heavy download friendly'. They've mentioned several times that if all you want to do is download all day and night, this will not be the provider for you.

        • cheers, that's about what I was getting on Telstra cable & a bit less then I get on Optus cable. Oh well sounds like we'll stay with cable until we're kicked off. Faster uploads would be nice.

  • What's the latency like, was getting 2ms at all times with internode and now with Aussie broadband I get anywhere from 6-30ms on speed tests

  • +5

I think NBNco's paused their HFC rollout. Our area is deemed to be up & running by July-Sept, but it hasn't even left the planning stage.

    • +1

Same with my area. Says July-Sept, but it's almost mid August and still in Planning stages.

    • Also gone from Jul-sep to planned.

    • My area is April-June 2018, just got a letter last night advising they will be coming out to do planning works. Have you received this letter too?

      Mines HFC as well.

      • Nothing from NBNco, just junk mail from ISPs telling me to sign up.

    • Same with me in Petersham (Sydney).

    • Mine's just changed to Oct-Dec now. In Waverley (Sydney).

    • If www.nbnco.com.au shows July-Sept then worth checking availability from ISP web such as iinet to find out the expected date.

Also worth checking the rollout map get a feel whats been done in around your area..

After June 2017 I find the info on nbn website is inaccurate for my area (lower north shore, Sydney). Timeline:
      - May 2017: nbnco indicated planned availability Jul 2017
      - early June: nbnco changed planned availability to Jul-Sep
      - late June: nbnco still indicated planned availability Jul-Sep. ISP indicated available from Jul 21.
      - July: wtf nbnco is committed to completing the rollout by 2020. ISP still indicated Jul 21.
      - 21 July: signed up nbn with an ISP.
      - 8 Aug: NBN tech came and service active since.
the info from nbnco is still incorrect. I guess they run out of money and stop updating the status??

      • That rollout map is very innacurate as for my area it's totally blank but we have had crews out and I just got a card in the mailbox saying construction would start this week.

  • +1

Already a happy VOIP customer with Telecube.
Unhappy Cable (ie HFC) customer with Telstra. Bring it on "Jan-Mar 2018"

  • hmm…. currently on Optus Cable … wonder if it will be any better, cuz optus cable sucks

    • +2

For HFC, I believe NBNco install a box with an ethernet port like this
      https://www.tpg.com.au/support/nbn/ntd-hfc

Then you need a router to plug into that.
Here's a whirlpool thread on Telecube modems
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2618758
      Here's one on HFC modems
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2619692

    • Layman terms: NBN Co. supply the modem that has a coax in and ethernet out. The ethernet connects to your router.
So to answer your question, a modem is provided, but you will need to provide a router or organise one through your RSP ie. Telecube

My HFC Setup: NBN Modem -> Ubiquiti USG router (which connects to network switch and wireless access points) to provide internet to the house.

You can always get a router with wireless combo (Asus RT-AC68u) or similar that would do both routing and wireless access to your house.

      • How's your ubiquiti router? I was going to knock up a pfsense router, but I suspect the ubiquiti one would be easier to get running. Where'd you grab it from?

        • +2

I really like it - pretty straight forward to set up and the info that you get from the Controller is nice.

I bought it on eBay with some discount code from Futuregear (think they are NZ based). http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ubiquiti-UniFi-Security-Gateway-U…

They stock a fair bit of Ubiquiti gear at reasonable prices.

          Cheers.

        • @ozhaydos: thanks for the tip, it looks like these guys are in the ebay 20% sale, so I might buy a USG, switch & cloud key…just seeing if they'll combine postage.

nows a good time to start securing my IoT crap with their own SSID & routing.

        • @supabrudda: I'm interested in the same things but alittle lost. Do u mind inboxing me what you go with for your setup

      • +1

        So,

FTTP = any router will do
        FTTN = need VDSL modem
HFC = any router will do

        ?

  • i have (optus) HFC you get a arris nbn box where the coaxial connects then a sagem nmoden which connect to other with ethernet cable..and don't hold you breath if the nbn stops the service is crap from nbn

  • +3

Telecube customer service is top notch

  • Any speedtests for this provider?

    • Pretty much 94/34 peak hours included. FTTP

    • +1

      http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6527908345

Im in northern Tasmania on FTTP and have been with Telecube for a bit over a year, support is great, speeds have been pretty consistent and solid enough that I've moved the parents over to Telecube too.

      • Cool. Just the thing I was looking for, how it works in Tas. Cheers.

  • +2

been with this provider for half a year, nothing but good things. their customer service is exceptionally good. im on a 1TB 50/20 $59 plan, which i think i'll stick with. I look at my monthly usage and i seem to use so much unmetered or offpeak data its crazy

@OP: telecube also has unmetered netflix

    • Please post a speedtest?

      • im not at home. but i did one recently and it was like 44mbit down. i just clicked random server didnt even go through them all

      • I'm with telecube on the new perth pop under the 50/20 plan my speed test the other night during peek time on FTTN (est 1km from node)
Ping 10ms, Download 21.62 Mbps, Upload 7.66 Mbps

    • +1

From what I understand it is not unmetered for this offer. It was for a previous older Whirlpool offer but I didn't read about that one in time :(

  • +1

I signed up with buzzTelco from previous deal. It seems great with no setup fee and local AU support. I am getting around 92+ / 40+ speed.

  • +1

Same buzz telco is $10 cheaper and probably better.

    • +2

Deal has finished? I read some very bad reviews of people getting only 10mbps in that thread on the last page. A few even went TIO.

    • +1

probably better? don't think so. I've been on the budget ISP train for a long time, had to get the TIO to pull me out a few times. had a good run with telecube so far, don't think anyone has gone to the TIO with them yet, unlike buzz.

  • so if they can turn a profit at these prices why are we suckers on ADSL2 still pay $100 a month for 500GB and dialup speeds…

    • What, $100 per month for 56 k speed? ( exaggeration I'm guessing?)

  • +2

I had a terrible experience with them unfortunately, speed was so slow and the customer service was terrible to try get it fixed. I ended up getting most of my money back and going to Aussie Broadband. Went from 4mb/0.2mb to 95mb/30mb with Aussie BB.

    • which company was this?

  • I signed up with them when I moved into my current place a few months ago, figuring that if they weren't up to scratch I'd look elsewhere.

As it turns out, I have no complaints about Telecube. Great speeds, their support on WP is excellent - I've seen posts from the owner providing support to people in the middle of the night.
I've not had to call them so can't speak to that side of things but I have emailed a couple of support requests, they were dealt with in a prompt manner.

I'm in Tasmania, using the Vocus backhaul - http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6527462373

  • Does anyone know if I can sign up to this if I'm already an existing customer on a 24monyj plan with Optus cable?

Logically I think no but ive heard that the NBN encourages you to switch to NBN and as a result you can break contract?

    • +1

if you have the NBN you could sign up with this internet on a different port, and have 2 connections going. as for getting out of your contract or whatever, no idea.

    • You could probably get Optus to transfer your contract from cable to NBN, but I don't see how the existence of NBN is going to get you out of your Optus contract.

  • Any idea if you can sign up as a pre-order? NBN is not due here till October.

    • You can signup and add the service to your account and we'll provision it when your area goes live. You will need to go through the process of adding the service and paying the charges though.

It's very likely we will be continuing the offer after the end of this month though as well.

      • just to clarify, will that mean we will be charged for the months before connection or only after the service is connected?

(i.e. I signup now but NBN not due for a month in my area)

  • Im with ABB looking at better international speeds. Would these guys be better? Im in melbourne

    • ABB have more delay time than Telecube when I play online game which server is in China. I live in the CBD of Melbourne.

  • -1

Shaping and data limits? No thanks

    • +4

Either choose to be shaped when you go over your limit, or choose to be shaped every day cause your ISP offers "unlimited" and skimps on CVC.
ie You'll be shaped either way… just in one option you're more likely to get what you pay for, the other option you're volunteering to put up with snail's pace internet at exactly the time you're most likely to want to use it every single day.

      • This ^

Some of the "unlimited" providers shape you everyday 6pm-9pm due to congestion

        • You need to look for a better ISP on the Nbn. The bigger more common players out there don't do that..

        • @roosta:

So who's a bigger more common player without shaping, data limits AND without congestion?

        • -3

@zeggie: Nbn? It's a shared connection so at peak times with any provider you will struggle with ranging speeds. BUT if you want an ISP with an unlimited plan and no shaping, I'd suggest Exetel.i im no fan of my current ISP (MyRepublic) but they do have a better unlimited data plan just based price Alo e. Throw in a static IP and they claim to NOT shape any traffic for 70 a month… No data limits on fastest speeds possible for FTTP or FTTN 100/40

        • @roosta:

As I expected. You suggest a better ISP and come up with Nada.

My point stands and I agree with scubacoles. Unlimited = congestion.

        • -2

          @zeggie:

Your point is not valid. Cable and NBN are shared services but are affordable when it comes to high speeds (like 100/40). Congestion on a network is a sad reality so when there's 1 download request at any given time vs 100 requests then your maximum available speeds with any ISP is not going to be the same {if that wasn't already obvious}. The point t was there ARE ISP who will intentionally shape certain types of traffic, or offer shaped speeds when you reach a download cap during peak or off peak types. I made 2 recommendations that offer good unlimited plans where the above example is NOT the case.

  • Interested to know what the latency is like for people from Canberra. Internode was perfect with 2ms ping at all times even during congestion it would only spike up to 5ms.

  • Just checking out the ABB website, is the equivelant plan to this deal $100 p/m with them?

  • +1

Thanks, ordered. If this pans out bye-bye Internode and thanks for all the fish.

    • So far so good, provisioned within a couple of days over the weekend, getting ~90/36 in Hobart while speedtesting to Melb (seems like that's where the peering is anyway so targeting a server in Hobart is actually worse). Dashboard is a bit confusing but support seems excellent so far. Unless congestion hits I'm very happy with it.

      • How's the overall feel with the speed at 7pm - 11pm? Is it reliable and fast enough, no congestion yet?
I m with internode as well, looking for switch…
        Thanks

        • I've only had it for a few days so it's hard to tell. I went from 50/20 Internode ($86) to Telecube 100/40 ($69) and bandwidth to certain services in the US dropped from ~50 to ~25mbit which is annoying. Also they don't provide SMTP (email) relay services which is annoying as well. I run my own mail server so it's no biggie but just an another thing to remember…

I'll have to run some more tests during different hours of the day within Oz and overseas, but so far I'm happy enough that I discontinued my Internode service today.

Can't really vouch either way yet, sorry.

  • Would like to know ping on FTTP in Melbourne?

Was looking at the my republic deal from a few months ago but seen they had a high ping, currently get <5 on dodo but paying too much.

  • If we sign up for this deal, is the $69 price locked in for as long as we like?

    • I think yes. But does that really matter? It can only go cheaper (or give you more data, etc) in the future like current ADSL or mobile plans.

  • not bad

    FTTB Melbourne.

    77.95mb down 37.48 up

    http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6538173459.png

  • anyone figure out what a standard home no frills voip account adds to this $$/m wise? - cant find it on their site?

    • It will only add call charges, we'll include a DID (local number) at no cost with an NBN service and you can register as many devices as you like to extensions for free and then just pay for outgoing call costs.

  • Offer has been extended till end of September see whirlpool post

  • I have been promised to wait a few times for Telecube to support Opticomm for about a month now.. It's still no news from Telecube until now.. Tried to reply their [email protected] email but it was bounced. Could Telecube Rep please respond to this comment since your PM isn't active??
