Awesome light, I have two and the app is great. Has been cheaper before, I purchased mine for $9.90 USD ea.

    • Do you use the Yeelight app or Mi home? Yeelight doesn't recognise my bulb, could be with the location setting.

      • i have connection timeout issues with mine :( works fine at parents house with NBN connection, but craps out on my ADSL2.

      • +2

I use the Yeelight app, I initially had issues with them being recognised so I had to manually reset them (on off 5 times). When the light reset and started flowing it pretty quickly got recognised. Updated firmware and it's been stable for the month or so they've been installed.

  • :( I have all B22 sockets in my house.

  • I been wanting to get one but i just can't seem to think of any significant or practical purposes I can put these to.

Which room are people putting these in and how are you using them?

    • +1

I've got the RGBW ones in my living room and bedrooms, can voice control them all through my Echo Dot and Google Home. It's nice being able to walk into my pitch black house and say "Alexa, turn on living room" and having the room lit up. I also have them set up to dim when I'm watching movies and stuff, but that's a little bit more advanced.

      • I figured they would be handy for home integration or for those nice areas of the house where you want to create some ambient lighting.

The dimming functionality is what I was most interested and so I can ditch the bedside lamp.

Without going into too much detail, how did you set them to dim when watching a movie? Via a XBMC a plugin? Just curious.

        • +2

I'm using a raspberry pi running Home Assistant, was actually fairly simple to set up.

        • @raistlin:
          Thanks, I'll look into it.

        • Can't you just dim it through the Mi app?

        • @PAXA359:

Of course, but that's an extra step and requires me getting out a phone/tablet, this does it all automatically. Also, I can optionally say, "Alexa, turn on movie mode" and achieve the same effect.

        • @raistlin: Oh wow… didn't know it could be that advance!!

      • I can't get this to work with Google home/Yeelight actions, my bulbs are not showing in the list of bulbs. Is your location set to Singapore or China?

        • Singapore. China server isn't supported by anything external.

        • @raistlin:

Thanks, I'm using Mi home app and set to China as I have other Xiaomi sensors and cameras, that could be the reason why it's not working with Google home.

I have mine installed at front door porch and have it scheduled to turn on at 7pm-5am. I also have one installed on 1st-floor hallway above the staircase with Xiaomi body sensor, it automatically turns on when someone is going up or down the stairs.

      • Brilliant. Both great ideas.

      • Do you need a Xiaomi getaways in order to get these bulbs to work??

        • Bulbs don't need the gateway, it uses wifi, but sensors and other Xiaomi smart home products use ZigBee to connect to the gateway, which is the only device that connects to the Internet.

        • @jominix: I see! Talking about Zigbee, do you own any of the single wifi power socket (Zigbee version)? I have one with non Zigbee and I don't know what is the difference between two…

        • @PAXA359:

Yes, I have the Zigbee version, I think the only difference between the two is that the Zigbee needs the gateway. The wifi version connects directly to your router.

        • @jominix: So… is that mean if I want to pair a non wifi appliance with my xiaomi body sensor, I must use the Zigbee version? Because only Zigbee could communicate with the getaway, and send signal to the body sensor?

        • @PAXA359:

Not really, as long as Mi Home app supports the integation of the device. ex. I can turn on/off the yeelight bulb which is wifi using the body sensor which is a zigbee device. Not sure about the plug as i dont have the wifi version.

        • @jominix: Cheers mate! Guess I'll get one Zigbee Plug and try it out… ha

        • +1

          @PAXA359:

Yeah as long as you already have the Xiaomi gateway, I recommend you use the Zigbee one to reduce the number of devices connected to your wifi.

        • @jominix: Yes, will do!! :)

        • @PAXA359: I believe the Zigbee version requires the Xiaomi Gateway to function where as the Wifi one can be used with your home Wifi. Also the Zigbee version provide energy consumption data. I have a few Zigbee sockets all integrated into HomeAssistant through the Xiaomi gateway. Works a treat.

        • @kazzman: Thanks for your input mate! Cheers. Btw, do you have any which I believed the latest version with a USB port on it? Do you know if that is also Zigbee?

        • @PAXA359:

I don't think that is a Zigbee version, I can't seem to find it on sale anywhere too. Maybe it's an older model?

        • @kazzman: Not too sure either! But the price cost more than both Wifi and Zigbee thus I suspect it's the latest version. Here is the item found on Geekbuying!

    • A weird use case for me but I have some light bleeding in to my room when I sleep, so I use it to dim the lights to an acceptable level before I snooze. I can set it up to dim between certain hours but haven't yet.

      This is my setup basically.

Xiaomi air purifier turns on in the living room daily for a few hours. I have a Dylos air monitor which tells me how well it works and, well it is acceptable. It doesn't clean as well as a Blueair.
Xiaomi power sockets: All the other non-branded Xiaomi air filters in my house automatically turn on and off whenever I leave/return to the house.
Xiaomi vac automatically turns on and runs once every other day. I empty a full container of dust every couple of days.
Xiaomi home security activates when I leave the house and if window/door sensors/body sensors are triggered, it sends me an alert and sounds alarm, then automatically turns on all the lights inside+outside.
Xiaomi dome camera: After alert, I am able to remotely login to the camera and because it has PTZ features I can "look around" to see what's happening. If there were any intruders, then his face would now be on the cloud, ready for police.
Xiaomi smoke alarm + gas detector: I have both installed, so if I am away or sleeping and any anything "goes" off, all lights in the house are turned on with alarm.
Xiaomi water leak detector: I have it installed in my laundry and dishwasher. If the pipes burst, it would alert me ASAP. I bought it because, it has happened to me before and this
Xiaomi light bulbs: I have it enabled on all the toilets with the body sensor. Basically I can go to the toilet at night without ever touching the light. With a family, that helps keeps the germs at bay. It also automatically lights my stairwell and any areas that are dark in the house, e.g. garage when it detects someone.

This is what home automation is all about. I was hesitant to jump on the bandwagon early on, but Xiaomi products are really quite affordable, so it was a no brainer.

      • Wow, I love your setup, I'm hooked with Xiaomi products as well and have the rice cooker, lights, sensors and camera. Next on my list is the smoke alarm and gas detector, stupid question but do you need an electrician to install this or just as simple as unscrewing and replacing the existing ones?

        • The smoke detector uses a battery, cant remember the type, but spec says it should last 3-4 years. I have it installed near my current wired one. Gas detector needs to be connected to power.

        • @overshopper:

Ok thanks, so I can just stick it anywhere on the ceiling without removing the old one.

      • was going to add this after water leak..
"This could happen to you at home with your pet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMxZkUYhwHY "

Oh, and the Xiaomi products are good for those who have pets, you can check in on them anytime on your iphone/android :P

  • Is the 600 lumen they quote accurate on these? Seems really low is all. Considering replacing a bunch of compact fluros and they're rated at least 800.

    • Not sure of the specifics but I use these in my bedroom and they're bright enough. Have to use a desk lamp if I'm studying though.

    • They don't seem to be higher than 600 to my naked eye.

  • Sorry newbie at these smart lights here.
But can i control these just using an app, or do i need something else to connect all the smart bulbs to (eg. google home) ?

    • +1

You can just use the yeelight app to dim, setup timers, control remotely, connect to ifttt etc. However, if you've got a more sophisticated setup, you can do more complex things like connecting movement sensors etc.

      • +1

You can also use IFTTT for automation to get up and running quick.

    • +2

You can also buy this which lets you control everything through the Mi-App (see below). One thing I like so much about Xiaomi (besides being cheaper than the competitors), is that connecting it up is really simple and I've never had connection issues/dropouts like I do on the Philips Hue/Belkin smart products.

      • Agree, the gateway seem to be really stable and well built. I just haven't got chance to experiment with the alarm as the time seem to be off. Do you know what timezone it uses? I think it's 2 hours delayed than Sydney time.

  • I got one of these in previous sale, pretty good little things though unfortunately the colour temperature cannot be changed and I find them a bit too cool white for my liking.

    • That's what I'm thinking too. I would have prefer 2700k

      • The link says 2700k, is that not correct? That should be plenty warm (I prefer our 3000k ones over our 2700k though)

        • +1

I think the 2700k at the top spec is wrong. It is actually 4000k which it mentions at the bottom

        • @kooper:
Yes, after my comment I realised that the text in the spec was different from the text in the pictures. That's a shame, 4000k is too cool for me.

        • @kooper: hi,kooper,

          Thank you for your correction.

yes,it is actually 4000k. We have modified the spc from 2700K to 4000k.
