870

Deal is on again! Same price as back in June 2017 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314570). Deal has been noted to end on Monday.

Great deal - I picked one up back in June in-store for $23 due to an in-store pricing error… let's see if the same thing happens again this time.

Since I bought it I've used it twice… For those who are regular uses of the Steamlink… post something below to get us infrequent users to get excited about it again!

      picked one up

      Was it heavy?

      • +21

Wishing you an early Happy Fathers' Day.

        • +6

Very early, since I don't have kids.

        • +3

@PainToad: How does everyone feel about someone using top shelf Dad jokes without having kids yet?

        • @cypher67: For the longest time, I thought jokes like that were funny. But friends made me feel guilty about cracking jokes like that. Telling me I was too young for dad jokes. I caved. I became one of them.

Jokes are jokes. That was funny, and I can totally appreciate that.

  • can I stream desktop to steamlink like chromecast? been thinking to grab a chromecast but steamlink would be a cheaper option

    • +3

Yes you can. It ends up being exactly like screen mirroring.
You'll need to set your monitor resolution to be the same as your TV which can be annoying.
Also can't click the "cast to Chromecast" button on all your devices (e.g. phones, tablets) which is a nice feature, when it works.

    • +3

Yes, I bought Steamlink so I could watch US Netflix on my TV and it works like a charm.

      • +1

        What vpn do you use?
        Had any problems ever?

        • +5

          @Xebozone:

so I could watch US Netflix
          watch US Netflix
          US Netflix

        • +6

@Xebozone: You do know there's a huge disparity in the amount of content on US Netflix compared to the dismal amount here in Aus?

        • +3

I use Getflix smart DNS and it's been working fine on PC. Stopped working on other devices for a while now though.

        • +3

          @pakon29:
I thought that as well and had given up. Fired it up recently and it back to working again.

        • @pakon29: ok thanks mate.
Might give it a try as I have watched most of the good stuff on Netflix au

        • @combatant: Haha wow… I got negged bad! I completely missed the "US" wording :(

Chromecast has been much simpler for me. Although steamlink can do it, it often doesn't work as well as you would think. Also don't even consider this if you are planning on using WiFi.

    • Desktop streaming has been very poor with the Chromecast I've found, I have every version of the CC too.

However, steam link always works like a charm. Once you start the connection, just alt+tab on the computer and off you go. When wired it's amazing how smooth everything is.

      • The only thing that has worked for me without issue has been buying a cheap second hand slim computer that I stick in the cabinet and use directly or remote into other PC's etc. Chromecast works amazingly well for anything but desktop streaming over wifi.

    • Can you display your Windows screen through the Steam Link?

E.g. watching sport on your PC and casting to a TV?

  • -1

Does this controller work with Apple TV?

  • I am using one of these in my arcade cabinet after getting bored with my Raspberry Pi. Streaming Mortal Kombat X and other modern games makes it feel a bit more relevant then having a purely retro arcade setup.

    • Hmm. Mortal Kombat X. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a while.

      • I use the term "Modern" fairly loosely when compared to "Retro"

  • +4

I take it there is no issue using a wireless keyboard and mouse for some PUBG on the TV?

    • +3

      I like your thinking

    • Wouldn't be the best experience I don't think just because of added lag compared to on your PC, but might have to try this out myself.

This might be worth a look.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogNT6w4bzIs

    • TV input lag isn't the best for twitch games.

  • Does this work well over wifi? Or will the lag be unbearable?

    • I got one in the last deal and found that its pretty unplayable using 2.4ghz wifi router, but have had no issues once I setup my 5ghz. However this may be due to apartment living as the 2.4ghz bands are jam packed

    • No. Lag is unbearable.

    • its fine if you have a good connection. what i did is get a powerline adapter and now its perfect.

    • Virtually unplayable on Wireless N for me, probably be better on AC. Plugged in ethernet and worked perfectly.

My Steam Link purchase has been more than worth it for me personally. It works flawlessly with an ethernet cable connected (haven't tried wireless).

I use it to play games with my daughter and son on our TV as I haven't owned a console since the original Wii. It has also helped to get me back in to platformers and other adventure/puzzle games. Nothing like playing a laid back game on a big TV while lounging on a couch with snacks and a cold drink on hand.

Here is a list of Steam Link supported controllers

    • +1

Yep 100% love mine. I have two and have recently been playing with 'retro' launchers and the like.

Will be purchasing the controller as my PS4 controller battery life is pitiful and have heard that the steam controller batter life is good.

  • I found the Steam Link to be really inconsistent, even connected via gigabit LAN some games (especially The Talos Principle) looked like they were running on my TV but others (especially Nier Automata) looked like I was watching Youtube on dialup. I ended up just buying a super long HDMI cable. It's like magic when it works though.

How's EB's returns policy on hardware by the way? I'm interested in trying a Steam Controller but it's a lot to spend on something that might end up in a drawer unused if I don't like it.

    • I get that sometimes. The game plays in HD, and then suddenly, it gets all pixelated for a few seconds… then gets good again.

  • not sure what that can be used for, but bought one.

  • +2

How's the steam controller play like?

    • It's great, but games rarely support it, steam controller setup is terrible, requires much setup and fiddling to get it right in games that can use it.

It's a fantastic controller that is let down by terrible support. Just use Xbox controller.

      • +1

Almost every single game has some form of support for the Steam controller. If it's not officially supported by the devs it's guaranteed to have community-made controller mappings at the click of a few buttons.

For more finicky games it can take a bit longer to setup to your liking but that's the joy of it. Last time I checked you could have up to 32 different button mappings at the same time on each trackpad alone. That means that between the two trackpads you can map up to 64 different keys/macros AT THE SAME TIME!

        • This is a good point, although sometimes I just want to play a game, and not spend hours setting up a controller so that I can play the game. Perhaps I should have said, if you like a controller that just works, don't but the steam controller. If you like spending time to customise mappings and put effort into just getting the controller to work as you would expect in games, then the steam controller is a good option.

    • I'm following this bit too. I'm keen to get one because having to pair/re-pair my controllers to different devices is getting old.

I was either going to purchase another DS4 or Xbox 360 controller for exclusive use with the steamlink but the customisation and trackpad like accuracy are intriguing.

It seems like the controller is quite polarizing. I see reports about some people loving it because of how different it is and some people hating it for exactly the same reason!

      • It takes a lot of getting used to. Depends on the type games you play I guess.

        • +1

Thanks for input! Pun not intended…

      • +1

Personally, it took me a few days before I got used to the size of the controller; but now I prefer it over my other one (PS4).

    • I've been playing with mine for a few days now.

Regret purchasing it. Different 'profiles' change the controller mapping completely and it becomes a major problem in certain circumstances.

Some games just straight up don't work even after downloading the highest voted configuration.

Should have got an xb1s Bluetooth controller :(.

  • I've only used mine a handful of times. Mainly because I can't be stuffed using KB+M from the couch.

It really just reinforced my hate for controllers (trying to use Xbox One controller Microsoft gave me).

It will probably continue to collect dust until I build a mount for my steering wheel which would be great in front of the TV.

  • Purchased this on the last deal in June for use on the bedroom TV since it was so cheap. Tested with wireless (only N mind you) and was crap, ran ethernet cable to it and was perfect. Haven't used it again since lol, but would only use for controller compatible games. Tested with wireless Xbox 360 controller.

    • So you're saying the 360 controller works well?

      • Yes it does and so does the DS4.

My only gripe is having to go through the rigmarole of re-pairing these devices when I have to use them with other devices.

      • +2

Yep works perfectly, but you do need to plug in the usb wireless adapter. Bluetooth controllers like DS4 can just be paired with no need for an adapter.

Here's a list of compatible controllers and connection methods.

  • Good price - picked on up this morning.

And here I was asking the bloke at the counter when the next sale on the controller would be. :) This was just last week.

Anyway, I play on the steam link a fair bit. Mostly for the action adventures and platformers. It has been pretty much on point. I'm on ethernet.

Anyway, there are compromises compared to gaming on a beast of a rig in 4k, but if you're not fussed by infrequent and intermittent slowdowns and hiccups, it works like a charm to play a huge part of your steam backlog on the couch.

Specific examples include finishing Ryse and totally enjoying Mark of the Ninja. (I feel that Mark of the Ninja might be superiour on a couch on large screen)
Also, I found I could actually play Enslaved: Journey to the West. Turns out the massive motion sickness that I initially got from it could be mitigated by playing much much much further from the screen than I could on my PC.

  • +2

I use the Steam Link primarily for couch co-op games with friends. They're usually pretty cheap on Steam and are great to play with some Xbox controllers on the couch. Favourites would be:
    - Jackbox Party Pack (1,2,3)
    - Duck game
    - Overcooked
    - Hidden in plain sight
    - Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

I do have issues with it from time to time, such as random freezes, but on the whole it actually works really well.

    • I'd also recommend these as two of the best 4-player couch co-op games:

      Rayman Legends
      Mario 3D World (using Cemu)

  • Damn that's a good price. Not sure if I can justify the purchase since I just use a Raspberry Pi running Moonlight to occasionally play games on my TV, although I more often use it for just streaming my desktop. I suppose if the Steam Link works just as well or better and allows me to RDP then I could use the RPi for something else.

  • Bought it last time, hooked it up to my wired network, works well however setting up other controllers (i.e. PS3, xbox 360) can be fiddly.

    • Does it work with Xbox one controllers?

      • +1

Yes, Xbox one (non S) wired - Xbox one S (wireless as well as it has bluetooth)

  • As posted here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324042

  • Grabbed one, I've had a few logitech 710 controllers in the draw I've never used for about 3 years, they might finally get some use!

  • Would this be suitable for me? I want to play pc games (eg sports or fighting games) on my TV. I have wireless logitech controllers and the computer is located about 10m from the TV and I will be sitting in the living room (behind the wall) next to the room where the computer is located in.
I'm a bit worried about input delay and or game delay. (Currently have a chromecast, but it didn't work for gaming)

    • +2

It doesn't matter how far away the PC is, the point of Steam streaming is that your input devices are connected/paired to the receiving device (in this case the Steam Link) and your input is streamed back to the host PC. You technically can use it with the controllers connected directly to the host and just the output being streamed, but even if you could at that distance you shouldn't because your input won't match up with your output.

Distance only matters if one of the devices is connected to the network via Wi-Fi. Experiences vary from no effect to near unusable, and if both devices are on Wi-Fi it's more likely to be on the bad side. But if both devices are wired networking, distance has no impact (in the scope of residential use).
As an anecdote, I stream from a desktop gaming PC to a laptop. The desktop is wired to the router, the laptop is 802.11n. There are occasional dropouts of a few seconds about once per hour, but otherwise it's good enough for twitch gaming.

  • IF your PC is connected via WIFI and hates lag, input delay or latency issues, dont get this, I picked one up for the same price and its just unbearable. even for $27, its expensive for a doorstop

Got one and as expected controllers with a MAC backend suck! Why do people like Macs?

    • Not even under Bootcamp or Parallels?

  • Cannot get my steam link to work. It is asking for an audio driver update. Tried updating then nothing happens.

  • I use mine all the time!Mainly for fmovies and party games. With wireless AC and powerline to my PC. It works pretty well, although the occasional drop in resolution is noticeable. Powerline is really the only way to go without ethernet and will definitely add to the cost of your setup.

  • Returning mine. Just wont work with my mac. Garbage.

    • Not even under Bootcamp or Parallels?

  • Ugh, I was just about to post that amazon had the link at USD15 and the controller at USD35… damned shame, because apparently it's over.

I should've checked my email sooner.

  • Mine is working a treat!

Kodi works well, also just using my TV as a pc.
