  • I really have to ask about these WiFi / Bluetooth light-bulb deals….

Do those of you who have bought them actually use them?

I cant think of anything I want to do less than pull up my phone, navigate to an app, and change the temperature range of my light bulb (if this is what happens).

    1. (in all seriousness) is this just a gimmick or do some of you actually find this useful?

    2. One last question - can you link them all together and turn them up and down at the same time throughout the house? (that would actually be useful)

    • +2

I link mine all with Alexa. Alexa - turn of all lights. Done and leave the house.

      • All the links I've found say that these lights don't work with Alexa - got a link/guide you could share?

    • +4

Find it very useful, some of my use cases:

      1. One in front of my porch that scheduled to turn-on every night at 7pm and turns off at 6am. (even when I'm away)
      2. Installed one on staircase that turns on automatically when someone is detected using Xiaomi body sensor.
      3. Turns on the light in the garage when the door is opened using the door sensor.
      4. Can set to warm colour or cool white depending on my mood.
      5. Yes you can link them altogether and create a "Scene" from the app and integrate it with other Xiaomi sensors.
      • Keen to know about the one used with the body sensor.
I'd like to have something like that, which can turn off again moments later in the hallway in my new house as we have kids.
        Any tips?
        Thanks.

        • You can buy the Xioami Smart home kit to get started or buy the gateway and body sensor separately.

You need the gateway in order for the zigbee sensor to communicate to your wifi light. All this can be setup from the mi home app.

        • You could just get a Yeelight which is a basic motion-detection light, if it's for a small area.

    • We use the colour ones in lamps & linked to Google Home (via yeelight/xiaomi singapore server). That way voice can turn it on/off. It was bought mostly for a gimmick value. But it's been actually handy having a lmap at the top of our stairs, and ask Google to turn it on/off at the bottom of our stairs, which is quite handy, especially if you're carrying something (like bins, washing, etc).

      I couldn't justify the $30+ ones.

It's mostly gimmicky, but these frontier technologies always require 5x more dedication than what it takes to buy them. I bought mine to use as a sunrise clock, but found it too harsh. Even so, the dimming function really comes in handy when your watching movies, and the ability to switch from yellow light (homely and relaxing) to white light (clinical and productive) is worth the price alone

    • Very useful for me

I've put them in varying lamps around the house and have it hooked up to IFTTT, my google home and my arlo pro.

If it detects motion on my arlo, the light comes on, if I ask google to turn on that room's specific lights, it turns on, I can start watching tv and it will turn on and go to a specific colour/temp. I can set mood lighting if we're having dinner on our patio, etc.

For the price, it's quite neat. Is it necessary? No. But for how much I've spent on these lights (~$100 in total for 6 lights), I am happy with it.

    • I use mine in the lamp in the lounge room, its on a timer to turn on / off at certain times of the day.

I have just bought another one that i can turn on when coming home at night in my porch above the front door so i can see the locks as i work nights.

I also like that you can change the colour hue from "yellow" to white.

Ok google, turn off the light…

  • +2

More importantly will any of these eventually work with google home etc?

    • +1

They already are working. Google home links to Yeelights with Singapore server.

I use the xiaofang IP camera and these light. To make sure I have the cam in my app I had to change my locale to mainland China. You're saying to integrate these bulbs with Google home I need to change my locale to singapore server ? If I do so would the camera still work ?

        • Google home and alexa only work when you are connected to Singapore server.
You cannot have Google home, Xiaofong and yee lights working together.
The work around is to use Yeelights with singapore server via yeelight app and control them with google home. I have the 6-in-1 home automation with Xiaofong seperately working via Mi App.
          Hope that helps.

        • @Bippz01: so yeelight app is different from mi app and can use Sg server
          Is this an iOS app?

        • @sian72:
Thats right. Yeelight is a seperate app and is available on app store.

        • +1

@Bippz01: but isn't this light different? I'm talking about the xiaomi Philips light

        • +1

          @OZB fan:
This light is different. It will work only with the Mi home app.

      • How do I program it to the Singapore server?

        • The App ask you which server u want to connect to during setup.
You can even change the server later on but have to logout and login again.

        • @Bippz01: Okay, I'm admittedly a noob. Which app is this by Xiaomi?

        • @YellowKnight:
Xiaomi has 2 apps. 1 is Mi home app which is better if u want to use their home automation and should be synced to China server.
The second app is Yeelight app for lights only and should be synced to Singapore server for use with Google home and Alexa by voice commands.
If u dont intend to use google home/alexa then Mi home is enough and gives u full control via phone app.
          Cheers.

  • interesting… hmmmm

  • How does this compare to yeelight?

  • Finally I can get electricians to install lights without switches. Save some installation cost :)

    • +2

My suggestion is not to do this. You want a way to reset the lights easily and you'll need them if you ever want to sell.

  • will the wall switch still turn this on and off? or is it phone and auto-people friendly only?

    • Why would u buy this and not any cheaper LED bulb if not using app/ auto- people friendly setup???

Btw: it does work like a regular on-off bulb.

Seeing more of these popup on the front page nowadays and keen to get started. I currently own a XiaoFang IP Camera that is synced to my WiFi network and controlled via my phone Mi Home app?

Will I need to buy a sort of Home Kit to get started with light bulbs and weighing machines? Or do they all just sync to the Wifi network and be remotely/scheduled control via my phone Mi Home app?

    • +1

You set them up in the Mi Home app. If you want more integration such as sensors then buy the Xiaomi Mijia Home Kit.

So when China decides to invade in a few years it's a sure bet they're gonna do it at night, after remotely disabling all the Xiaomi LED lights we'll have come to depend on - you'll be staggering around in the dark trying to find your pants while your door is getting kicked down!

That's why I sleep with a flexible USB light plugged into a powerbank, next to my bed!

That's why I sleep with a tin foil hat and a flexible USB light plugged into a powerbank, next to my bed!

      Fixed!

    • +4

That's why I sleep with a flexible USB light plugged into a powerbank, next to my bed!

Which is ironically most likely made by Xiaomi also.

  • Are there any 60 Watts equivalent bulbs?

  • +1

Do these have an API you can use without having to install Xiaomi's stupid app?

    • Not that i am aware of. However comments above say they have used them with Google Home.

  • Do you have to purchase a gateway or anything to control these or does the app essentially act as a gateway ie no additional purchase required?

    • +1

They are wifi cloud based, so you only need your phone. You only need a gateway if you want to use external zigbee switches.

      • If I'm not home, can I turn on/off this light through the app?

  • Brightness stated as 450lm and can be adjusted, but perhaps only up to 40% as bright as a more typical (ceiling) bulb.

Would be great to have a ceilings or larger rooms- pitched smart 13w/1400lm brightness light, not so much different than recent Philips https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/420503/phi… (featureless, but) giving over 100lm/w. May have to wait though.

  • How bright are the RGB Yeelights compared to these (in reality, not based on specs)?

  • Needs the mi app to be on mainland server which means I can't see my other devices

  • Is this officially supported by Google Home, like the Yeelights?

  • Seems to be out of stock to me.

  • So, installed the light today, then installed the Mi Home app. It found the light in the app, but I can't control it. Am I missing something?
    EDIT: sorted it out

  • Does anyone know how to get this working? it doesnt show as a compatible device to yeelight or MiHome
