Wouldn't something like this be better value?

I have one like that and doesn't seem to charge MacBook 2015 at full rate.

    • +2

      That's not USB-PD standard though.

    • +3

That one appears to be a standard USB C not a USB C Power Delivery which is the standard you will need for more rapid charging through the USB C port.

      • The USB-PD chip used in this device (and quite a few others) doesn't operate to spec. It may still work fine for you, but probably worth keeping in mind when buying.

Is there a good, tested, cheap USB-C to USB-C cable that people recommend? Looking at this one https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-AmpCore-BW-TC4-3A-USB-Typ…

Finding a good Type-C cable is such a pain.

    • Yep I would say go for this one. Lots of people on Ozbargin now vouch for the quality of the ampcore series and it's a good price as well.

      • Sounds like it will be limited to 3A though (although my HP is 45W I believe so that should be okay at 15V). It also doesn't state USB PD support (only quick charge), and only supports USB-2.0 transfer speeds (480MBps instead of 10Gbps).

It would be nice to find one that's 5A (100W) with 10Gbps transfer speeds for under US$20 - although these are limited to 1m by the spec apparently. For a charge cable, 480Mbps speeds means it can have a longer length.

I wouldn't be so worried about trying cheap cables if they didn't damage devices, but that's not the case according to the Benson testing: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vnpEXfo2HCGADdd9G2x9…

Yeah the real fun will start next year when intel lets companies use thuderbolt free of charge but at this stage data transfer speeds are not the concern. 5a cables will come down in price next year as USB C becomes the norm.

No experience but cheaper than the one you posted.

      • The Ampcore cables are more expensive as they have a better build quality.

  • Just a note, the title can be misleading by saying 42W USB C. The max for the USB C is 30W and the max for USB A is 12W giving a total of 42W.

The Nintendo Switch requires 39W to charge effectively while being played. Just wanted to let people know.

    • Thanks for that. I might take it out of the description.

Reviewed by Nathan K, so appears in his list of tested cables: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vnpEXfo2HCGADdd9G2x9…

    The summary:
"Bad PDOs. Split PDOs. USB-PD controller bad."
Rated '-2' on scale from +3 to -3, where -1 is 'advise against'.

YouTube for the review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hac6lVGkiio (titled 'Tronsmart C2P 12v car charger USB-PD chipset is defective')

Yes I think this is enough to disavow the product. I think I will expire the deal.

      • +1

Ok, cool. It's a shame though - it would be great if someone made a cost-effective USB-PD type C car charger.

        • Yeah if the problem is just a defect in the controller chip then it shouldn't take too long until a new one is released with an improved chip. Growing pains of a new standard I guess.
