Ahh, the-after Xmas "double the RAM and storage season" for those with the patience to wait :-)1 USB3 port as well, tho still only 10/100 LAN and 2.4GHz wirelss N.

Not asking too much for $70 am I…

  • How does this comlare to the mi box?

    • +2

this has play store so ABC Iview, SBS ondemand, freeview, all the aussie stuff you get from playstore like if you were loading app on a phone … Mi Box, you have to side load (no play store, it's Google TV), so depends how technical you are and time you have …. my mi Box collects dust while I use a $40 android media player.

      • wrong! international version of mi box has official play store app installed. no side load required.

        • +3

garage sale is right: Mi box has got the “TV” version of the store(just like the Sony android tvs)

        • +3

which is still an official Android TV play store. garage sale said "no play store", which is misleading info.

        • +1

          @oj4rec:

for the uninitiated like myself - is the official android tv play store for tv 'different' to a normal android play store offerings? It seems to be indicative here that the fact this offers a normal android phone style store, which i assume has more than a play store for android tv devices?

        • +4

hence i mentioned like loading apps on their phone …..people are probabaly used to android and phones and what the phone play store offers ….. rather than google tv playsore which lacks many of our localised apps such as abc iview, or abc me for kids, freeview, sbs on demand …. all apps easily loaded onto a phone, not so easily loaded onto a mi box.

        • @SaberX:
see garage sale explanation. adding to that, Android TV play store focus is the applications designed to work nice on TV box devices using remote controls; while applications in the regular play store designed for phones/tablets with touchscreen.

        • @garage sale: there's official Aus catch up apps on Android tv now. You should try it again

        • @garage sale:

          thanks garage sale.

WIthout tech knowledge is it easy to load apps onto a mi box and the like? I hear words like side load thrown around but don't mean much to me…

  • +3

As far as I know, this doesn’t support LibreELEC (yet). If you want that better off with a s905x box.

  • Not including the "Get Seller Coupons" US$3.00 off?

  • +2

Good review here especially at 7min18sec where it is ranked with other TV boxes

    • +1

most of these boxes are similar with the same cpu family and memory size. They are generic hardware designs developed by the soc manufacturers and the individual tv box manufacturers and add a few tweaks and their logo to the software which is also a common base across may of them. l have reflashed boxes with firmware from another company as one had newer version if they had the same hardware base.

so you tend to pay for longer term software support with a brand rather than innovative hardware as the differentiator.

  • +1

    entirely average

  • +1

max 1080p via the youtube app :(

    • Ah that sucks. Do you know of any Android boxes under $100 that do 4K YouTube? Cheers

      • +2

This box will only do sub HD netflix as well. The Mi box does 4k Youtube as well as 4k Netflix.

        • I have an X92 3GB S912 model tv box, can you please confirm that netflix will only stream in SD and not 720p or greater?
I had no idea all this time I am possibly streaming in SD - I mean it looks pretty clear to me

        • @Forskin:

I had no idea all this time I am possibly streaming in SD

This is extremely common. You'd be able to tell if you saw SD and HD side-by-side of course.
But people usually don't notice if picture is SD when expecting HD.

          this shows:
          - how free-to-air TV gets away with terrible quality low-bit-rate channels.
          - why UHD is a pointless gimmick.

        • @manic:

According to Geekbuying my device supports:

Google Widevine Level1, Google Widevine Level3

Does that mean I am streaming in HD?
Is there a way to tell?

        • +1

@Forskin: Theres only a very small handful of android devices that play netflix in HD, the Mi, nvidia sheild tv, chromecast. Ive seen the M8S Pro+/Pro L mentioned further down but have no experience with that player.
This will give a little more insight http://androidpcreview.com/netflix-hd-android-tv-box/

  • +1

No Hd netflix, so better off getting a m8s pro plus. Only chinese box that can run hd netflix.

    • M8S Pro+/Pro L or the Mi Box.

I have the M8S pro+ btw, and its Widevine DRM has become faulty suddenly. I am now dealing with gearbest warranty. Difficult to explain the problem to them

      • with all these boxes, once a new model comes out and sales drop, so does the software support. unlike a pc which has a lot of backward compatability e.g same windows 10 code runs on i5 gen1 vs i7 gen 4, with these boxes the software is very cpu specific so s912 firmware can’t be run on s905w etc.

i accept that i buy a new one every 2 years to get the lastest version of android , hence buy cheap.

that said i still have some on android 5 and they run fine as media players with vlc, kodi, chrome, etc.

  • Can i connect a wireless mouse and keyboard via usb dongle?

    • +1

      Of course…

  • Is it rockchip ? Yes, is it 3399 ? No…

  • +2

This box may look grunty hardware-wise.. but as others have mentioned

    • NO libreelec support (being a rockchip powered box)
    • NO netflix in HD (no Widevine Level 1)

This box is only good for those who have a large local collection of movie files, and not looking to stream high definition content.

    • +1

not looking to stream high definition content

Fun fact, not everyone uses Netflix to stream.

      • all high definition streaming services eg. netflix, amazon prime, stan, hulu use widevine drm.

you don't need a high-end box for abc iview, sbs
for example this SCHISION V88 is sufficient. AU26.20 (coupon TOPBOX3) https://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_401685.html

        • all high definition streaming services eg. netflix, amazon prime, stan, hulu use widevine drm.

Fun fact, not everyone uses streaming with DRM.

I have to stress the importance of garage sales comments re version of playstore. If indeed iView and SBS On Demand apps are not available, or easily available, that's an issue. I've been playing with kodi, and as far as streaming from channels etc goes, it seems a waste of time. The reason is that the add-ons soon stop working because the site has made some change. SBS On Demand add-on for example currently not working. I'm assuming that iView and sbs apps can be updated, so shouldn't be a problem. Really most of the add-ons in kodi seem time consuming with little reward (not updated, no streams available, stream gets interrupted and stops.

    • +1

in our household, my 11 year old loads the apps he wants , he loaded abc me ( slightly older kids) as it caters for his age group, i didn’t know he has outgrown abc for kids, i load what i want … iview as i watch docos. he expects it to work as easy as his phone for apps and he never asks me to get stuff to work on his phone.

  • Any of these boxes do 4K HDR mkv via Kodi and don't have HDMI audio passthrough issues?

    • does this box even do 4k HDR via kodi?

      • Looks like you can do it with libreelec on amlogic powered boxes. I've got an old one with an S905x. Going to try it tonight

        • Let me know if this works. I'm also in the market for a cheapo android box that'd do HDR with HD audio passthrough.

        • @crazyleo:

Forgot to do it, got sidetracked with FIFA

        • @crazyleo: It worked a treat. Mine is the Tanix TX5 Pro. I tried 4K HDR MKVs over the 100Mbit ethernet and they worked pefectly, no passthrough audio issues either.

          I used info from https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread/9319-8-2-2-3-libreelec-8-2…

I saw this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354871 which has the same hardware as mine, so should be able to run libreelec on there too.

        • @chromium: Many thanks dude. Where did you buy the Tanix TX5 Pro from and how much? I'll do some research on the deal you linked in your post. Theoretically it should be no problem as it's using the same chipset S905X.

  • —- deleted —- my question was answered above.

  • Total newbie to TV Boxes.

I have a fetch box, a computer and a PS3 connected to the TV and thats all of the HDMI spots full.

I have quite a lot of movies/tv shows on a separate hard drive, is it possible to connect the Hard Drive to the TV Box and run the movies through that?

Is it simple enough to set up?

Is this a good one to start with, it would really only be used for Kodi i think.

    Thanks

    • +1

for watching movies off hard drive usb stick these boxes are great and even the cheapies support 1080p.

we take one with us on holidays and some movies as some holiday houses don’t have internet or it’s slow, or country TV is a bit limited .

VLC as a media player seems to have the best support codec wise for what we watch.

netflix SD vs HD vs FHD …. netflix has a list of players on their website , and there are lots that are “ approved” Netflix doesn’t actually have a certification program…. otherwise you’d need to decertify each time software is updated …. an impossible task.

for netflix the defaults are SD and you need to select HD manually as netflix assumes mobile app ( thinks you are using a phone) so drops definition to save bandwidth unless configured otherwise.

      • The Netflix stuff is actually related to DRM so no android box will play in HD, there is my manual changing it to sd. So that's flase information
