Optus Mobile: 12mth Contract $36 /Month, 20GB Data, Unml Talk / Text for Students (New Customers and Re-Contracts Only)

690

Found this deal today while in the midst of trying to unsuccessfully recontract my phone with Telstra on the $39/15gb Mx offer. Only going to be valid if you have an .edu email address. I was trying to get more data to help me watch Netflix while I am without internet for 3 months so for me 20gb for $36 with Netflix and Spotify streaming is perfect.

I was trying to get more data to help me watch Netflix so I signed up for a $36/month 20GB plan with data free Netflix.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but if you are using it to stream Netflix why do you need 20GB on a data free Netflix plan??

    • +2

      why not?

    • Because I have unlimited data on NBN at my home but will be away for 3 months - considering my average use tops over 100gb a month for various things which also includes netflix - being able to stream netflix for free instead of using the data (which i would have to with Telstra) is a bit of a bonus in my circumstance. I could then use the data for other purposes but obviously not to the extent I would at my home address.

      • -2

Oh right, see that is making more sense now.

        • He may want to VPN to US Netflix on his PC which starts counting data.

    • +1

Its only data free on your mobile. Can’t stream to a tv.

      • Or tablet, or wifi dongle.

        • Yeah - I only have my phone with me…no plans to sent it to another device.

        • I think if you have a phone plan it’s phone, if you have a data plan it’s tablet or dongle.

      • Not true. Have tested this quite a bit. Had a sales rep try and tell my gf that it was impossible to share to tv but we had already tested and confirmed that it worked and data wasn't counted

        • No have tried that and data was counted.

        • @wxyz234:

Isn't it only standard Definition Netflix which is free data?
Could it have been streaming HD Netflix to your tv?

        • Depends what streaming tech you use. The majority of devices just get the program address from your phone and play it locally. Screen mirroring is fine though.

If your TV has WiFi, will likely work if you hotspot your phone for it.

        • @Salmando: Hotspot and TV wifi is what I did

      • The wording used, is that it is not GUARUNTEED to be data free when used via hotspot or tethering. Personal experience is that I have not seen the data used when hotspotting to an Android tablet or another android phone, but when tethered/hotspotted to my Laptop or Set Top Box, or to my Ipad, the data was definitely counted. Thats why Optus has a blank statement about it not working, because explaining and setting expectations for the various scenarios would be a nightmare for both staff and customers.

Officially, it is only data free on the device with the SIM card installed.

  • New and re-contracting services only? Is there another option….

    • No but some offers are for new customers only :(

    • +1

Yeah just one, during a contract.

      • This is available for Recontracting customers online only.

  • I remember optus 20gb + unlimited music sports and discovery channel and other get freebies was $30.why paying more?

    • I don't think optus have ever offered a 20gb plan for $30, but i do wish they would bring back their $30 15gb plan. virgin has a similar offer on at the moment but i would rather stick with optus in the hope that if i recontract, my 3 data share sims will magically come along for the ride :)

      • I assume you are reffering to the $0 data share sims that came out a few years back. As of right now, they are only effected by direct changes to the specific line that has that option. In other words, you would have to chose to cancel or chance the plan on the $0 data share sims to lose them.

So go ahead and change your main plan, or add other services, those 3 data share sims will continue to have access to the data pool.

My contract for the previous Optus deal has finished. Not sure if I should go with this or wait for something cheaper with less data. Decisions, decisions…

  • I thought Netflix streaming was extra? Happy to be corrected!

    • nope …. with post paid sim only netfix is extra …. I'm in the same boat … they used to do it on sim only and then pulled it last year so now it's Spotify only ……

      read the fine print.

but 20gb on sd is a lot of Netflix anyway ….

if you pool it with a broadband only sim you get Netflix … but now the $$ are going up so not cheap unless binge watching.

      • About 20 hours. < 1 hour/ day.

      • I don’t understand. You’re saying Netflix is not included and is an extra charge? As I assumed?

      • The Video streaming option is included in this offer. So yes, Netflix is Data free. All SIM only data plans on 12mo contract have this included at no cost. The Month to Month SIM only plans do not, and Prepaid have a 10GB limit on included Video streaming every month.

    • I can confirm that it has Mobile Streaming TV for $0 as part of the plan.

      • -1

Okay awesome. Would this work if you tethered to your laptop and streamed Netflix from a desktop browser?

        • +1

I don't plan to but I did some googling - apparently the free TV stream is only for use on the phone/tablet its included with - they can theoretically charge for tethered or streamed (Airplay/Chromecast). It seems so have gotten it to work tho and not be charged but its against the terms.

        • @chimeralex: how would Optus know if it was airplayed/crhomecast?

        • @entropysbane: chromecast is using its own connection to download the media.

  • sorry didnt see the recontrated customer. but compare to previous 30/mth deal this is not so great

  • Do you need to change the settings on your Netflix profile to be SD?

  • -7

There is one problem with this deal.. and that is.. it’s on Optus network

  • -1

The Netflix streaming is only SD… in other words 16 times worse than 4K.

    • Damn, that will ruin his experience on his phone for sure…

  • Bugger, if only anyone could use it. Nice deal op

  • Question: currently on a $30 10+2GB bonus student data for optus for about 10months already, seeing this deal is so good. Will it be gee for me to contact optus and ask to change to this plan or do i have to wait an extra two months to move to new plan?
    Also
How long does this offer last?
Starting a new uni next couple of weeks so hopefully I’ll attain my new student email then!

    • +1

You can terminate your current 12M contract to sign up for a new one at a fee. Approx. $25 - depends on the agent.

    • +1

Since you are recontractting, it will be available online until March 31st. No agent in store can help with this plan, it is online only. Telesales might help you until March 16, but for sure, form the 17-31st its Digital only.

    • +1

Looks like plan ends 31 March - so you've got time.

      • Sweet, thanks heaps guys!
I’ll hit them up over CHAT online then!

  • To terminate my current contract was $50. I tried to haggle down but the rep was an ass.. I seriously hate there customer service support. I still think however this deal is good. Any ideas on what music-streamer to use? I'm in love with Spotify, but upgrading my contract from $25 to $36 is out of my budget to continue with the monthly Spotify deal. Love to know your thoughts.

    • +3

So, the rep was an ass because you wanted to prematurely end a contract you agreed to, but don't want to pay the fees you contractually agreed to? OH KAY.

Spotify data free is available on literally EVERY current Optus offering, and wont be removed from any current Optus offering that has it already. Not sure what you are asking.

    • mine runs till end of June - I tried to haggle and the max they would waive is $30 out of the $50.

  • +1

Awesome thanks! Upgraded from the previous 17GB deal.

Don’t forget the $10 broadband discount too (if available to you)

    Making it 20GB for $26

    • Sorry mate, where do you apply the discount you have for broadband?

    • I talked to the online sales rep, and he told me you couldn't stack more than one discount (the one discount being the student promo) so how did you manage to get away with it?

  • I just tried to upgrade my current student $40 15GB Plan to the $40 20GB and the website doesn't seem to be working.

I filled in all my details and put the student discount code in, plus my student .edu email, then clicked "Place Order" - just sits there.

Contacted Optus Online Sales Dept. and they were no help. I explained their student-hub website was broken and it cannot take any orders, they said that they cannot accept orders for this unless you get an order number from the website.

The sales rep said wait a few days and try again. YAY!

  • Got my deal working. Thanks OP.

  • Does it come with international calls?

    • +1

yes, 300 minutes to selected countries.

  • how do I leave Vodafone plan that expired after 2 years and automatically started monthly plan? I really want to get this plan just for Optus Sports and the huge data.

  • Thanks guys, great offer. Was going to sign up with the 24mo $59/mo S8 offer, but f 24mo plans.

  • I still have my old university email address - can I use this to get this deal? Will Optus know I am not actually still a student? Do they confirm it at all?
