  • do you think students can get another 10%? if so the network might not cope

    • I would like to know this too.

    • +3

      No, they can't.

  • Does this include Optus Sport?

    • +4

Only if Optus Sport means hunting down Optus customer services personnel with a pick axe after they destroy your sanity

    • It does, you have to add the Optus Sports from "SPORT, ENTERTAINMENT & EXTRAS" to your plan which is free.

  • Thanks for this OP. Great offer! I have paused my cart details (not progressed with an actual order) and emailed myself a copy of the cart via the ordering page link. I am going away for two weeks and I do not want the SIM to arrive during that time.

The Optus email states "Please note that the cart details are effective for the next 15 days (expire 28 February 2018)" Just FYI for anyone in a similar position… I hope that they honor that Feb 28 offer expiry date lol. Optus are fraught with ordering woes and stuff ups usually. The email provides you with a direct link to your cart.

    Edit: Spelling..

    • I would think that is the generic cart timeout date. However the order expires earlier so get onto it if you can.

      • "However the order expires earlier so get onto it if you can."

        Yeah, the promotion ends earlier…

        Good point! Thanks.

    • $32p/m 28gb data Virgin is a sweet deal ATM. Same Optus network.

  • Did the previous deal back in Dec 12m sim only .. did that include tv too ? only I can see I've used loads of data for STAN

    • Hhhmmm. That is one to watch with this new promo as it refers to the "$40 My Plan Plus 12M SIM(Dec 17 Online Promo)" on my order. We need a confirmation on the makeup of that Dec 17 promo despite the TV inclusion in this latest promo T&Cs. I don't trust 'em..I dont want to enter a period of protracted negotiation after placing the order!!

      • Yes lots of protracted follow up required
Signed up to 3 of these at Xmas special
Still trying to sort out charging me $40 instead of $30
Netflix etc may be free but have fun trying to track your data because it seems to include Netflix use - shared data doesn’t seem to track the free inclusions. So I remain hesitant to go to my data limits and then have to argue about recovering excess data usage

So yes you may get promise of $30 plan but Optus has required many class etc to as yet get the benefits of the plan

  • +2

Got this on the last deal. Unfortunately Optus have been charging me $40 per month, and I've contacted them twice and they keep saying that I signed up too late, when in fact I signed up three weeks before the original deal expired.

They also took a month to actually ship the sim card. Pretty poor experience overall

    • +1

their customer experience has been terrible lately, I have tried to re-contract to a BYO plan and the stores blatantly said they can't help and need to go via online channel only

      • +2

yea stores been shit lately, u go for anything and they be like this can only be done online.

    • did you get it fixed though? Plenty of people on WP reporting this is a recurring problem?

      • +1

Nope not yet, I told them yesterday that if they didn't get back to me by this afternoon I'm going to the Ombudsman (will probably go on Facebook first though)

  • What about combining with broadband and getting student discount?

  • +1

Always happy to know how much they value existing suckers… i mean customers

  • EPL? Nat Geo? Included?

    • -3

not included, might be data free though if you pay for the subscription

      • +1

it is included if you add it as an extra, no charges

  • +9

My brother in law has been on optus contract for years and he managed to get it this plan. He was very difficult with them and demanded to speak to supervisers etc… lol wouldnt take no for an answer… They ended up giving it to him, im not surprised.
I mean, even buying Coles Roast bbq chicken, they didnt have any left and had to wait 20 mins. He demanded to see the superviser and they gave him a free chicken for next time because he found out, the policy is if you have to wait more than 10 mins, you are entitled to a free chicken. Haha thats the way he is ..

    • +17

He sounds like a pain in the arse tbh

    • gonna find myself some free chicken

    • +3

you mean all this time i could have gotten free chicken!

  • Is there any other deal with around the same amount of data running at the moment? If this is the cheapest im getting on it asap

  • Just signed up on live chat - thanks for the link as my 6 month promotion at $15/mo from TPG was ending :)

  • +1

Is there any SIM plan (With calls) cheaper than $30 that you could get and add to this for data pooling?

(On the plan page there isn't, but I thought OzB's might tell me if I was missing something)

My wife and I currently have a $20/m plan each (other providers), getting a few Gb each. But if you could get this and a $10/m plan to add to the data pool it would be a great alternative.

  • so after 12 months this reverts to $40?

    • +2

      After 24 months

  • +4

If anyone gets billing issues, if they charge you 40$ or don't give you the Optus sport free, like they did to me last time this deal was on, do not talk to live chat , they are utterly incompetent. Go straight to the yes crowd forums and pm a mod there. They are very helpful.

  • I am not sure your guys. Optus sucks I am live in Marion there is no signal sos only in shopping centre. Also, I am working in the city also has really bad internet connection. Even they gave me 150gb I would use it.

  • Can they tell if you're tethering data? I've got an unlocked phone and this deal looks good.

    • yes

    • Sorry i dont understand why you ask this. Don't they allow tethering?

  • +1

    Hi All,

Please beware of Optus allowing their 3rd party service provider to charge you unknowingly. I signed up for the 12 months $40 plan at 25% off back in December last year and only starting last week a free sms came in stating i have subscribed to Tamtime for $6.99/week, I thought one of those spams again …. until I went on my online account last night and they have been charging me 3 consecutive weeks and I am sure I did not sign up to any premium service. I chatted with their online help and they said they would credit my account next bill cycle. What would happen if you didn't check your bill? I never had any issue with 3, Vodafone then even Virgin …. and I will not stay with Optus for sure after this incident even though they resolved for me quite quickly.

If you would like to know more about this unwanted content service charge, Google tamtime, seems only Optus customers complaint about this https://www.google.com.au/search?q=tamtime&rlz=1C1GGRV_enAU7…

    • Most of those SMS scams come from Facebook ads that you may have click to view an article. Make sure you reply STOP.

      • i have been using Facebook from 10 years back and never had an issue while I was with other telcos. In a newspaper article people claims even after they reply stop they are still getting charged. I got Optus help to reduce my premium service spending to $0.00 so that will not happen again hopefully, just something everyone that wants to join Optus might want to consider…

        • +1

Same exact thing happened to me. Replied STOP, requested Optus to block all third party charges, and Optus still charged me fees months later.

Happens to a lot of Optus customers.

    • This also happened to me.

      • how can I prevent this? I'm looking to signup within the next few days

        • Disable 'Premium SMS' services as soon as you sign up.

      • And me

Happened to me to. Optus supporting these scammers. Didn't even have to enter my details. They switched the [ NEXT ] BUTTON with [ CONFIRM ] and small fine print underneath. There I was pressing [ NEXT ] [ NEXT ] [ NEXT ] only for them to dodgely change the button to [ CONFIRM ]. Got billed for a subscription that I didn't intend to sign up for. I have left Optus and have changed to Kogan.

Use the chat option to chat directly with an Optus rep and they will organise everything, including porting.

Even ask if they can give you extra GB, last time around, I got 17gb for $30

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/notices/service-chat

    • I just talked to one person there….

I asked them if I sign up now, can I activate the service 3 mths later. This rep told me I have to activate the card on the day I receive the SIM card, or else I won't have the deal

I am literally shocked…. Does this rep know anything?

  • how long to re-qualify as a new customer?

    • Would like to know this too.

  • I just ported two sim only $40/10GB services from optus. I was with them for 3 years and they never agreed upon any of their cheaper deals within the past few years. So eventually I took my business out to Kogan. I purchased two $7.90/32GB plans + 16GB/90 days and 23GB/90 days. I used a $50 voucher that I paid for $7.95 + a $10 referral code and ended up paying $104 for both plans. Basically it works out $15.99 per service for 4 months. I'll see how I go. I live in Melbourne and so far I can't complain about the reception. And 23GB or even my partner's 16GB is more then enough to stream Spotify or Netflix. Do I ever stream Netflix out of home? Uhm… Nope. Downloading a movie when getting on a plane is what I usually do anyway.

  • is it wise to replace home internet with this. i dont use data that much and my kids keep calling everyday. they problably watch about 1hr of videos daily.

    • I wouldn't, excess charges are nasty. Unless your kids are old enough to have jobs and you make them pay any excess charges (they'll think twice about watching videos then).

  • I'm currently on Optus Prepaid Daily Maximiser ($2 a day for 1GB of data, Unlimited calls etc). Was able to select options as "existing Optus customer" and "Change from prepaid" to still get $30 on a 12 month contract even though it states only for new customers? Anyone successfully applied with a existing prepaid plan like myself?

  • Is there any way an existing pre-paid customer can get this? Pretty sweet deal.

    • yes, quite easy

      • Do explain

        • +2

PrePaid to post is considered a new contract. so you can just go online and get it

        • -1

          @letmesingh:
          UPVOTE FOR YOU, SIR!

  • Make sure you make an account and choose email bills as it doesn’t happen automatically and they’ll charge you for it.

    • Yes I got charged for the bill eventhough I have requested for ebilling during the chat. So do logon to the account the check if they have setup email bills correctly

  • can i cancel after 12 months?

    • This is only for 12 months

      • If i move from prepaid to this plan, will my old prepaid plan still be the one assigned to me after my contract ends?

        • Naw, you will keep paying $30 every month unless u move to new plan or move to pre-paid

  • "Unmetered Netflix" r u sure it doesn't say anywhere.

    • yea it does, actually not only netflix, it includes heaps more apps unmetered

I suggest people read through this before signing up:

      Sounds like whingepool to me.

  • No, The 25% discount will be available for 24 months unless a customer changes their plan or cancels their service. Not available in conjunction with any other in market offer.

  • If I buy today, how long do I have to activate?

Currently got 7 months of Kogan to go.

    • The sim gets activated once you sign for delivery with the courier.

  • Dammit. I just signed up last week on a 12 month contract with Virgin for a deal much less worth, ie. 5Gb data. What can I do? Can anyone help?

    • Virgin currently have 18GB for $32/month, so your best bet is contacting support and asking to be switched to that.

  • Can you chuck the sim in an iPad and stream Netflix data free? Or will it detect it’s an iPad and not work?

  • I got this deal in store today just out of chance didn’t even check ozb. I got even better deal as signed up the mrs as well for an extra $20. That’s 2 phones for $50 a month with all the free streaming, sharing the pooled data of 18GB. It was worded differently in store tho as ‘3 months free’ on the $40 plan, which works out the same as the $30 a month plan ($360)

    Poster in store:

The actual reason I went for Optus was they have wifi calling and I have poor signal in my area but NBN Internet. Now have full phone service and texting. So stoked after have to go near a window to use my phone! Wifi calling is the bomb!

    • So you only got 9GB each instead of 15GB

      • No, it’s pooled, you both get to use the 18GB so one could use 17 and the other 1 etc..

        • But you got a $30 and a $20 plan, $50 total, and only got 18gb. Whereas the $30 plan should give you 15GB each so 30gb total. Or did I misunderstand something?

  • Can I get this deal if I’m just a prepaid Optus customer? Am I counted as “New Customer”?

  • Wow, 15GB + free netflix data for $30?
No need for a router, cables, adsl. No need for the shitty nbn!

    • Only on your phone though, if you try and tether you'll likely get charged for he data.

      • Pretty sure you can flip a 0 to 1 via the adb to hide the fact that you're tethering.

        • Do you have a link with instructions?

        • +1

@Quantumcat: I don't have the exact link anymore but i have the instructions in a .txt file

I had to do this a few times as it was reverted with some system updates, so keep the ADB software installed.

          1. Setup ADB, phone drivers and shit
          2. Connect phone via usb
          3. Open terminnal/cmd
          4. adb shell <enter>
          5. settings put global tether_dun_required 0 <enter>

          ^ that's it.

        • @idonotknowwhy: don't know what adb is but I'll research. Thanks!!

        • @Quantumcat: ADB is clearly Australian Dictionary of Biography

  • Is anyone getting stuck on porting? i.e. keep an existing number, provide authorisation to port…web page has a popup "Processing" which spins for about 2 minutes and then disappears, but order doesn't progress.

  • This is a game changer. With unlimited music streaming (Spotify) too it's just unbeatable.

  • So I signed up yesterday, got an email 10 mins later asking for ID. Sent it off.
Last night I got an email saying my order was cancelled and to contact live-chat.

I contacted live-chat this morning who said it was definitely not cancelled and was pending a credit check. The cancellation was a 'technical error'

    What do I believe?

    • I had this issue too, they said I had failed my credit checks and there was no way I could get this offer. So it must be targeted

  • Ordered this. Great deal. Then if you have more phones to port you can do them for $20 a month each for the 3gb plan and then data pool across your family. There's a $10 discount for 2nd and subsequent phones for the same family. Student deals have to be on their own separate plan so can't data pool with the fam.

    • Hi, are you able to point to a page with information on those discounts?.

      • can't get it online…must go into a store.

  • +1

    Ordered this as well.

Porting from a 2 year old Vodafone $40 for 8GB student plan

    • what was the process in leaving Vodafone? My 2 year plan expired and automatically signed upto a monthly plan, which is annoying. Really wanna get this deal, not sure about the process.

      • +1

Nothing much actually. I just ported my number over. Choose delivery date for Sim card to be on the 16, on 16th Feb noon, Vodafone disconnected me. All I needed to do was to wait for my Sim card to arrive and change Sim cards.
