Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

closed Comments

    • Any particular reason?

      • Faster and easier to skim an e-mail for any top rated great deals that have occurred during each timeframe before they expire whilst at work.

  • Last night I received an email from OzBargain about a thread I had apparently subscribed to - ME Bank EveryDay Transaction Account - 5% Cashback Offer - and when I checked that thread, it had many unread comments and 12 subs total. Looking at how many unread replies there were, I should have received dozens of emails, not just the one.

The thing is, I would not have subscribed to it, certainly not intentionally. I unsubscribed, thinking nothing of it, assuming that I had subbed accidentally.

This morning I have another email - A category to which you have subscribed has been updated. Humble Weekly Sale: SEGA

Ummm nope, never subscribed to that either and checking my subscriptions, there's nothing there, not subscribed to anything.

There be something funky going on.

    • Greetings, foobar!
CyberGenesys has submitted a new deal for Gaming
IndieGala Supreme Bundle $3.99 for 10 Steam games (for the first 12hours)
Posted by CyberGenesys on on 14 March at 09:48 in tag Gaming

I'm not subscribed to anything. Surely I can't be the only one getting these ?

Is it possible that someone else has joined using my email address and is subscribing to random shyte?

      • I've flagged your issue.

Looking at your subscriptions you are subscribed to the gaming category. Do you see the subscription ticked?

        • If I go to subscriptions, it lists nothing. I was subscribed to the ME bank one apparently, removed that and then the list was empty.

          Are category subscriptions listed elsewhere?

Seriously, I've not subscribed to anything, three emails all of a sudden in less than a day for stuff I'm not remotely interested in.

Okay I now see the category subscriptions (was looking only at thread subscriptions before), and I see that Gaming is checked - is there any other way to subscribe to that list or does it have to be from that screen? If it can only be done from there, then something really odd is going on as I've never seen that page before, never investigated subscriptions until I started getting these emails.

What are the chances that I've somehow accidentally subscribed to two things in the last 12 or so hours ?!

        • You can subscribe/unsubscribe in 2 places:

          • The category page, e.g. Gaming Category

          • In My Account-Subscriptions-Categories.

        • If there's only two ways to subscribe - by going to the category or by intentionally going to account settings/subs etc then something is definitely up as I've not done either of those things.

I only every go to .com.au/deals and then open individual deals from there in a new tab, never view by category or any other way.

      • That's a category subscription email and it seems that you have subscribed to "Gaming"? You weren't from the database backup from this morning, but somehow you are currently subscribed to that category. Accidentally hit the subscribe button?

        • I did look at the sega deal I got an email about earlier - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/136682 - is there any way from within that deal that I could have subscribed to the gaming category?

Is this a potential security concern - as a result of these emails, I changed my password as a precaution. I am now at a friends place where I visit the site from and even though I have a new password, I haven't yet logged in from here with my new password, the cookie with my old password etc is still working. Checked with my phone too and same result, haven't had to log in with the new password but am still logged in.

I expected that after changing my password that I would be forced to log back in?

        • Regarding notification emails, if someone posts a deal in subscribed to, I get it 5 mins later.
e.g. CokeRewards I got the deal b4 the email

        • Just a followup to all this so anyone reading doesn't think I'd gone completely bonkers - a problem was found by Scotty that was resulting in subscriptions being added to my account without my doing so.

Had me wondering if I was losing the plot as it settled for a couple of days and then two more subscriptions appeared out of nowhere. I let them know and it was found and sorted shortly afterwards.

        • Thanks for letting us know.

        • I think I had the same problem recently. Had just assumed I accidentally clicked on the button because I had been browsing on my phone.

  • Ability to remove vote on poll, then being able to reset vote for a certain time period. Fat finger disease sometimes strikes..

    • I understood the first part of removing a vote but what do mean by resetting a vote for a certain time period?

      • You can re-vote on the poll

  • Hi - been missing my daily newsletter for a few days now.
I have not changed any preference regarding this - any ideas

    • According to our records, the newsletter batch included your email address everyday in the morning batch run from 11 March onwards. There also does not appear to have been any bounces for that email address. When was the last date you received them?

  • The 15th March was the last one

    • Our mail server records sending the latest email at 7:28:33 this morning, and the status was sent. Sorry, we can't see anything wrong on our end. Could it have ended up in your mailbox's spam folder?

  • No not there - I use Eudora and have also checked my ISP (Internode) email spam.
I will message their support and ask them.
I have added the exception "accept from [email protected]" to my email account.
Will see how this goes however there is nothing in the spam box.

    • Ok thanks keep us posted.

  • Got email OK this morning - Bill

    • Good to know :)

  • Just noticed the minus comment, revoking neg to deal. Good implementation!

  • +2

I'm sure I've suggested this before, as have others.
+ search should default to "by date" automatically

    Please.

    • See this. You can make search by date as default for your account by:

      • Go to Search Page
      • Change Sort to "Sort: Post Date"
      • Click on Save on the far-right

All your subsequent searches would be ordered by Date by default.

      • oooh, I missed that.
        Awesome, thanks

  • Just to add further credit to the good folks who post deals, when I click a username maybe the statistics should read:

8 deals / 760 comments rather than 8 posts + xx number of comments ?

    • posts include deals, forum posts and classified. More post types coming up. The "credit" would be their badges — look out for them.

I'll like to bring back up the notification button idea.
This is a mock-up of what it would look like
It would be a great choice to add it to the site

    • That requires implementing the whole light weight notification system, as PMs are too complicated for this. Most of these notifications are already been sent via emails (to bring people back on OzBargain).

      • Ah that's ok :)

  • +1

is it possible to have a search bar inside the post, only to search in the post pages? some post have over 5 pages and its annoying to go over each page and use Ctrl + f

and would like to add a subscribe function in Classifieds

also is the any way to favourite/ bookmark a comment, some comments have good info and would like to go back to them sometimes later.

  • Just curious whether you have states that record which forum topic gets the most views (not comments). I'm sure General gets the most but just want to compare Find Me a Bargain to the other Discussion categories.

    • No we don't record the page views.

As freaked out as I was when this page opened this morning I actually liked the look better scotty. Blue worked really well.

    • I completely agree, easier on the eyes especially at night.

    • +2

It will be great if everyone can choose theme/color that he prefer.

  • One of the main tags for "sport and outdoors" is "st kilda town hall"

    http://i.imgur.com/FIifiwh.png

    • argh. I'll get that fixed.

  • A fashion section and/or a baby bargains section in the forums please?

  • I would like a feature where I receive an instant email when a deal reaches a certain number of votes, like 50 or 100.

stop me missing the really good deals.

    • Just this at the moment — email whenever a deal reaches the front page (+20 votes). That means you'll receive about a dozen of those emails a day, but you are sure that you receive them early enough so you can act before it runs out.

      • close enough. thanks

  • Can we have an easy way to create a link to a comment, please? Or if there is already an easy way, please put it in the Wiki, perhaps on the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:Tips%20&%20Hints page?

In case it's not clear what I want, here's a link to Whirlpool:
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1602895

Every comment on Whirlpool has an "anchor" to the right of the comment, just above where it says "reply to this post". Right clicking on the "anchor" and selecting "copy link location" gives a URL that jumps directly to that comment.

I know it's possible, here's an example that I just created:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108984#comment-1479257
but I had to manually fiddle with the URL to create that link.

    • +1

hover the mouse just to the right of the time that the comment was made (next to the use name) and an icon appears. right click on that to copy. that is the link to that comment.

      like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/3664?page=6#comment-192876…

      or like this

      • Thanks for the info, I hadn't noticed the invisible character that only appears when hovering.

I just tried to add your info to the "Tips & Hints" wiki page, but that page must be locked, as no "Edit this page" option appears. Mods, can one of you please update the "Tips & Hints" wiki page?

A suggestion: can the invisible character be made visible when logged in, and be changed to say "Link" perhaps, with a bit of whitespace to separate it from the comment time? Then most people wouldn't need to consult the wiki to find out how to link.

Also, I notice this method embeds the page number in the URL. What happens when comments get added to a comment above the one you are linking to, and the comment you are linking to gets pushed onto the next page? I just tried manually changing the page number in the URL and the link failed, it just took me to the first page of comments.

        • Mods, can one of you please update the "Tips & Hints" wiki page?

I've added that to the Tips & Hint page.

          A suggestion

Let's see what we can do.

I just tried manually changing the page number in the URL and the link failed, it just took me to the first page of comments.

          Will look into that.

  • extra negative vote powers for "experienced" members.

today, for maybe the second time since being a member, I ran out of negs and want more.

  • Like the expired button for deal, for posts in "Find Me A Bargain" forum could there be a button for the OP to mark the post as "Found" , when the bargain item/thing/subject is…um…found

  • +1

The layout of the Live page for mobile devices is very suboptimal. A lot of column width is allocated to the time, gravatar, poster and action, and the title is squeezed into the right 20%.

Email Notifications for comments which have replied to yours

    • Like now I would get a notification

  • I want to suggest a new tag "endorser" which would be appropriate when a member thinks one merchants product might not be the cheapest, but has had exposure to their business practices/response time to overall be better. And would recommended it to another oz bargainer,

If there any payment or be gained from an endorsement then they would need to be stated.

Think Dawn selling those feet massagers, that's an endorser, rather than a "rep"

    • I think the plan was to expand the Associated tag to posting (currently active for commenting). Associated would cover anyone associated with the company whether an employee, friend of owner, marketer etc.

Think Dawn selling those feet massagers, that's an endorser, rather than a "rep"

      ??

I'd like to suggest that related bargains for the same product be shown in the main list view.

Case in point is iTunes cards. Right now they're 20% off at Myer. I think I saw they are (or are about to be) 30% off at Coles. I can go here to see all current and recent bargains, but I want to see that there are other bargains in the main list view.

    Example here

  • Suggestion: A little notification of some kind when someone replies to a comment you make, similar to the little letterbox that appears when you've got an inbox message.

Maybe have the letterbox, but if it's a comment reply, it says "X New" Next to "Comments" when you hover over "account"?

No idea if that made sense, but I don't always like having to visit every comment I make to see if anyone replied :) I know we can see "X New" when viewing all of our comments, but it doesn't mean they are new replies to our specific comment or not.

If this could be done, that would make my browsing efficiency increase tenfold.

    • I already asked that, tl;Dr too hard

      • Oh, my apologies. I read through almost every other suggestion and didn't read one of the most recent - yours!

        • No problem!! :)

  • Would love for some "smarts" to be added to automatically fix any instances of the dollar symbol being placed after the numbers e.g. 10$.

It's one of my pet hates that drives me mad!

    • Submitter was actually given the opportunity to correct the title but the suggestion is obviously ignored.

Just give a try yourself. Go to deal submission page and type in "this is a test for 10$" in the title, Tab to leave the field, suggestion is then given with dollar sign placed in front of the number.

      • I've seen that. Should have said "in the description or comments".

        • While we do have a standard on deal posting titles, the description & comments are more of free form which I'm happy to let each individuals to have their own style. If something just don't make sense I'm sure moderators and power users would correct them.

  • when you navigate to any of the pages under the wiki section, hovering over "Forums" at the top shows the "Free Software/Websites" heading truncated to just "Free". Is this a bug?

    • Yes it's a bug. Will get that fixed in the coming week.

  • +1

I would like to see more people crediting a deal to the actual person who first posted it. A couple of people do like this one- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142024 If we are gonna have people taking deals out of other people's posts the nice thing to do is acknowledge that persons effort

    • +1 no worries - welcome :)

  • I would love to see a STATE next to deals which are state specific. Free burger deals get me excited but after reading into the deal it only applies to VIC or QLD - never NSW :(

Example is the Aston Club app, which at this stage is only VIC.

    • Posters should be putting in the location in the title. However, for the Aston deal it isn't just VIC. Looking at my app it shows venues in SA, VIC, and NSW. Don't see any in QLD?

EDIT: I've added the states in the deal.

  • Suggestion: Folder options. From inside a folder, actions to e.g. "Move" deals to a different folder and "Delete" deals from a folder would be useful — currently have to click the saved deal/forum posts individually to uncheck the folder when deleting / moving / adding to another folder etc.
    Thanks.

  • Hi All,

On my iphone I deleted my cookies etc, and now ozbargain won't stay on "full site" and keeps changing back to mobile view. It previously stayed on "full site" view.

Am I missing an obvious setting to keep the full site view?

    • When you click on "Full Site" in the mobile view the cookie would only last your current session, i.e. it would be removed once you close your browser. For a more permanent effect please change your browser's default. Not sure on iPhone but on Android you can ask the browser to always "Request Desktop site".

As a Windows Phone user (WP8.1), I was hoping that a live tile for use with internet explorer 11 could be created for the site. I have provided the required link: http://www.buildmypinnedsite.com/en

    • That site is only for Windows 8 PCs. As a user of wp8.1 myself.

  • +1

Suggestion: How about a setting for number of deals per page/page length? I couldn't see anything like that. It would help if we've been away a while and want to scan through he deals faster. Thanks.

  • Any chance we could add the Velocity eStore to the list of cashback sites for each store? I work for Virgin and still always forget to use it for ebay, TM Lewin, Appliances Online, etc. so I'm sure others are missing out too. Full list of participating stores can be found here:
    http://estore.velocityfrequentflyer.com/az

    • That depends on whether Velocity can export the list merchants they are supporting.

      • Can you explain further?

        • All the existing cashback providers give us an API endpoint so we can fetch all their cashback offers and keep updated (once a day). We actually don't "scrap" StartHere & Qwibble's websites.

Velocity eStore would need to be able to provide us something similar as well.

        • I can probably find someone at work who can arrange that. Are you able to provide an example from one of the other sites?

        • Sure. Hook me up (Email: scotty@this domain).

          I'll need:

          • An HTTP/HTTPS end-point for API call to return me "list of offers"
          • Each offer would need to contain:

I can provide more details if you can get the developer to contact me.

  • I am unable to vote for eBay store deals because I once listed myself as store rep when posting one of my own eBay links.

I think this should be changed/disabled for eBay links.

    • can't even post a comment on these deals without having to mark myself as associated…

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/145412#comment-2005182

      • Its being discussed. In the meantime, if you report your comment, we can unclick the associated button.

    • @thydzik - sorry I forgot to get back to you, this issue was fixed a couple of weeks ago, I can see that you've voted for an eBay deal anyway.

  • Add page click through counter for competitions section?

    • Yep, I think that's coming in the next rollout of comp features and bugs. I'm curious about how many people are entering comps.

    • The click count was rolled out this morning. However we only have data click counts since this morning.

  • Would anyone support a Price Check section in the Classifieds?

    • What do you mean?

  • Hi,

Is there a reason the Food & Grocery Forum isn't linked up with its corresponding Deals category, as is the case with every other forum?

(I searched the Site Discussion forum and this thread but couldn't find this mentioned before.)

    • I will get that fixed today.
