Did Your ISP Block ThePirateBay?

Just out of curiosity, there have been big talks about it being blocked by all ISP. Does it (still) work for you?

Obviously I mean direct connection without VPN or similar

Wasn't the pirate bay blocked almost 2 years ago when the new legislation came into play? Surely every ISP must've blocked it by now, otherwise they'll be in contravention of court orders.

    • -1

That's what I was thinking and that's why I am asking. Works for me without any restrictions or workarounds

      • +113

Your poll is invalid. The title is phrased oppositely to the question in the description.

        • +1

          My thoughts too.

        • +2

Oh true. I voted yes because it was blocked for me

        • -1

          @gooddealmate:
Also there is no website as thepiratebay.xxx or at least I couldn't find nor resolve its authority! so everyone will report as blocked!

      • Wow. What ISP are you ?
Im shocked that the ISP your on hasnt done the block.
Its incredibly easy to get around, but it was my understanding that all Australia ISP had to make this minimal attempt to block the pirate bay site, and some other similar sites also.
You might actually be going through 1 of the pirate bay proxy sites (of which their are many) .
        Try thepiratebay.org
I believe this is the original pirate bay site.

        • The sites load but the content (i.e. search bar) does not.

        • @LoopyLou:
mine loads up the piratebay and can search

      • I have my DNS set to google.

    • +1

I thought it's ISPs that have a certain number of customers.

    • +10

yeah but it was a shitty DNS lookup block, which is fixable in about 3 seconds for anyone that can google, so i wouldn't call it blocked, just "annoyingly hidden"

    • +5

It's DNS blocked, nothing more. Easy to set your DNS to google DNS and the block disapears.

  • +12

Probably, but I use a VPN, so who cares. :D

    • +1

Or just use DNS changer app on phone. Or change dns through computer is also quite easy I believe.
Dns changer takes about 5 seconds to set up on my phone.
Tunnel bear, if I feel like the cool animation and hearing him growl. Lol.

      • +1

(Not so) Fun fact - Tunnel Bear was just bought out by McAfee. Hopefully this doesn't worsen the service.

        • I just like the animation and the growl from the little tunnel bear tbh. And of course, I like that it is completely free (from previous deal).

    • +1

hey. it's me. your friendly neighbourhood FBI agent.

  • Oddly it's working just fine without any VPN for me. I normally have to load up a proxy but it's fine now.
It's been blocked with the green warning page since late 2016 for most ISPs as far as I know. Easy to get around anyway.

    • Same here, who's your ISP

      • +2

Just tried "tpb (dot) org" and it's not working for me. Using TPG ADSL and Telstra 4GX.

  • no it wasnt

    • -1

      No it wasn't?

      • not blocked. m with myrepublic, even it was working with tpg

        • Its meant to be blocked. Clearly not all ISPs have bothered blocking it and the government doesn't seem to be going after them for not blocking

  • +17

blocked but only a dns block change to google dns and works fine

    • Isp?

    • +17

Yep, and cloudflare has a new dns as well that they are claiming is both fast and private. All requests deleted every 24 hours…supposedly. I've been using it for the last day or so without issues.

      1.1.1.1

      • It IS fast. 1-2ms whereas Google does sextuple that amount

PS: I didn't make up that term

        • It's actually quite impressive how much faster cloudflare is

  • +1

Yes - I leave this window open: https://torrents.me/proxy/pirate-bay/

  • Nope

  • +2

    TorrentDay is where it's at.

    • Have you maybe got an invite for it?

      • I have 2 invites. But if you don't use it well I can be punished too! Are you aware of how it works and requirements etc? If so PM me your email address and I'll send you an invite

      • Dont pay for it check here to start off

        https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenSignups/

        AR is good and open

        • +6

AR is closed now. Torrentleech is open for a limited time using code TL5ISLIVE.

        • @skrep: Thanks just signed up.

    • Torrentday is offering a single invite for a one-off USD15 donation at the moment.

VIP membership for one month then standard after that.

Worth every cent - depending on your interests.

      • What's the diff between the two?

        • That's a good question - and I'm not actually sure of the answer!

On the site, it says "VIP: Possible only via donations or promoted by Admin or Owner because they contributed a lot to the site."

The category is listed as the next step above User (the standard) and Power User.

    • +1

There are much better sites out there, just a little harder to get invites to.

      • It's a good a starting point. I don't need 20GB bluray rips and I'm on 100mbps FTTP so it's sufficient for my use.

        • +1

Download speeds and file sizes aside, a Gazelle based tracker offers a much better user experience IMO.

Does TorrentDay have decent invite forums? I know a lot of sites wont offer invites through sites that have paid entry.

I would suggest AB or RED as good starting off points as both offer entry via interview and provide a pathway to all the top trackers.

        • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: What is the benefit of Gazelle based trackers?

TD gives you two invites by default. After that I think you need to donate.

        • +1

@Clear: Gazelle is a website framework created by the guys who were running What.CD.

Mostly the difference, from a user's perspective, is how the torrents are organised. Instead of just having a big list of torrents that you search through everything is organised by Film, TV Show, Artist, etc (depending on the site).

So instead of just running a keyword search on a list of torrents, when I go to search there will be an autocomplete entry for the thing that I am searching for which will then take me a to page like this screenshot, where all the torrents are organised by release/file format.

          https://image.torrent-invites.com/images/2014/01/11/btn_tv_s…

Re: invites - what I was asking was whether there is a decent invite forum. Most trackers will have an invite forum which will open up once you reach a certain user level. The invite forum will have recruitment threads run by representatives of other sites and this is mostly the only way to get access to the top tier sites.

        • @Cheaplikethebird: Now I understand. That setup is actually really awesome and would make things so much easier.

I don't know of any decent invite forums unfortunately. I was invited to most of the websites like TD a very very long time ago.

        • @Cheaplikethebird: What's AR or RED? Are they by invite only?

        • @congngo: AB*. AB is an anime tracker Red is a music tracker. I won't go into too much detail but you can get all the information you need with a little googling. Both run interviews on IRC or did last time I checked, so you can get in without an invite. From what I know AB is a little easier than RED, but be warned it can take hours of waiting in an IRC chat room before someone interviews you.

EDIT: I dont think AB are doing interviews any more :(

        • @Cheaplikethebird: Thanks, wow crazy stuff - invites and interviews! I would have never imagine it.

Why do any of you use these other sites that require sign ups and strict rules, donations, etc, when thepiratebay works great without sign up and free plus seems to have everything one could want (at least all the popular shows/films anyways) .
Just curious as to the advantages of other sites ?
I just use piratebay and yify, plus occasionally EZTV .
Only interested in popular tv shows and films.
If there is some benefit or usefullness, I would try other sites.

        • +2

You’ve basically answered your own question - quality and availability are the main reasons. Sure public sites are ok if you’re only wanting blockbusters from the last year or so and don’t mind watching an absolutely butchered transcode of it (yify are notoriously bad) but if you want a decent encode or something that’s even slightly obscure then you’re going to have a hard time.

Private sites on the other hand will have pretty much everything that’s ever been released and even the most obscure release will be seeded to the point where it would max most people in Australia’s home connections easily. They also have standards and quality control that the public sites do not, for example WhatCD allowed only MP3s that had been converted from FLAC or there’s a certain HD focussed site that has a gold label that is only assigned to encodes of a certain high standard. This allows you to easily verify the quality of the release without having to guess from file sizes (not to mention that video related sites will have screenshots of the video for you to compare with).

Private sites are miles ahead of public sites, they just don’t compare. What.CD, unfortunately now closed, was without a doubt the most extensive music collection that has existed in this world ever. Here is a screenshot from the page for Jean-Michael Jarre’s album Oxygène, a well-known but still relatively obscure electronic album from 1976.

Sorry I went a little overboard in my "You don't even know how good it is" rant and didn't read your whole comment.

If you're happy with the quality of YIFY torrents and are only downloading the latest blockbusters/popular tv shows then you're probably best off just keeping with that.

To keep a good ratio on one of the top tier private trackers with an Australian internet connection then you pretty much need to rent a seedbox which costs about $10/month. That and it takes a bit time and patience, the path that I know of would take about 1 yr minimum before you have a tracker for each of your needs (movies, TV, music)

        • @Cheaplikethebird:
Thankyou for the detailed info. I would guessed it would have less content on the non-public sites, due to less users.
So would the blockbuster, popular stuff download faster through another site also ? I only have experience with thepiratebay really.

        • @ozzpete: Yeah well on a public site no one has any incentive really to seed torrents whereas on a private site people are actively trying to seed as much as possible. This means that they should be able to max your download connection.

The flipside of this is that you are basically competing with other members of the site to seed and because a lot of these people are seeding from seedboxes or home connections with 10Gbps upload speed and because torrents favour seeds with the best upload bandwidth, you will have a hard time keeping a good ratio on one of these sites on an Australian connection (you could probably do OK if you were seeding with a 100Mbps upload connection). To get around this a lot of people rent a seedbox (a slot on a server that runs a torrent client, you torrent the file to the seedbox then download it from your seedbox to your local PC)

        • @Cheaplikethebird: Why would people compete to seed?
Seems very risky for little gains?

        • @congngo: Because most of these sites keep a ratio of how much you download versus how much you upload. The more you upload the more you can download. Not every tracker is the same but most will enforce some sort of punitive measure if your ratio falls below .70.

Usually the site will do something like give you 50GB upload credit to start off with. Once you've used this you will need to build up an upload buffer (so you will need to upload more than 50GB) before you can download more stuff.

        • @congngo: Re: risk. There are measures in place that prevent people from sitting on a torrent and just monitoring the IPs that connect to it like they do on public torrents. Add to that the barriers to entry and there are millions more low hanging fruit for lawyers to go after. Having said that it's still probably good to have a few measure in place to distance you from your accounts on these sites.

        • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: thanks for the info. Think I will stay away from the sites :)

        • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: R.I.P. What.cd. Waffles isn’t bad but doesn’t compare to the incredible range and community What had.

        • @stickyfingers: I still have some W.CD stickers sitting around.

        • @Cheaplikethebird: where to go to get my JAVa and other assorted ahem adult entertainment of the cartoon and live action kind asking for a friend

      • Basically every other site just re uploads stuff that was posted to the main sites

BTN, HDBits, PTP for example are main ones for movies and tv

      • Loke what? Demonoid?

        • No. Even in it's prime, before it was shut down back in 2012, Demonoid had nothing on the top-tier trackers. You can find out more from the private tracker page on Reddit.

    • IPTorrent is better.

      • Not really…

"IPT is the dirty hooker of the torrent world. Sure, sometimes you might go there, but when you do, use protection." - https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/4t4d73/psa_please…

        • Just as a FYI, TorrentDay is a sister site of IPT.

For a general torrent site, it's great if you have a VPN, has everything you can't find anywhere else. You should be using a VPN anyway to DL. No way to stop any torrent site from logging IP addresses.

Obviously, doesn't come close to BTN or PHD.

But in saying that I remember when BTN and PTP had a leak too, so, VPN or it's on you.

      • do you have invites ?

    • Private trackers that you can pay to get access are completely retarded and shit

      • Good thing I didn't pay.

        • Not the point. any private tracker that has a pay to access option can (profanity) off

        • @Pacify: I haven't come across a paid one yet.

    • +1

      you kidding right ?

Top 100 website in the world. Still active and kicking with millions of visitors.

      • There are vastly superior options.

Some businesses and individuals still use Internet Explorer, that doesn't make it acceptable let alone optimal. Using TPB at this point is very much in that category.

        • +1

Care to expand on that? I find TPB very much relevant, actual and contemporan.

  • Well technically yes it's blocked but it's so easy to get around if you have just a little technical knowledge.

Knowledge required is - What are IP addresses and what is the function of DNS?

    • I know that, i am just curious because there have been such huge announcements that they will block it and yet it works for most

  • +8

Which one of your questions does the poll refer to?

  • -5

    LOL public trackers.

    • -2

I know right, 2018 and people still mentioning TPB & the like.
Let them be, it keeps the established sites safer without them lol.

    • +1

      Lol ratio cucks

      • Back to Kazaa/edonkey then if dont wanna deal with ratio? LOL

  • I use Torgaurd AU servers don't allow torrents but today they did

  • +3

TPB isnt blocked, only the dns has been redirected to a warning page. If you change your dns to googles or anybody elses rather than using your isps, everything will magically work.

    • Also use this, pirating made easy

  • +1

    Ne. Xxx

  • +1

    Blocked by iiNet.

  • No

  • -1

Are you using chrome? I think chrome forces you to use googles dns (makin bucks on your data yo). Probably wouldn’t work without a VPN on another browser

    • I use Google DNS, can you elaborate on your comment about them making money from it? Cheers

  • +1

It was blocked, but as other people mentioned, you just need to change your DNS to get around it.
