Flew DeathStar SYD to HCMC in Jan and Feb this year for $360 odd inc baggage and seat selection.
Was relatively happy with the leg room and comfort levels for cattle class provided on the Jetstar config 787.
Would happily make the same trip again for anyone who cares..
We did the whole Top Gear esk buy a cheap motor bike and rode 2500kms from HCMC to HAN

    • Geez, taking your life in your hands with that option. Fun tho.

14,000 per year die on Vietnam roads vs about 1k here.

There was a high element of risk, however we took steps to limit the risk as much as we could.
        Adventure before dementia
We came across a Chinese national lying face down on the road on the southern side of the peak of the Hai Van Pass, just North of Da Nang.
She had somehow crashed her scooter, scrapes were evident on the road suggesting she dropped it before the bike ended up down in a drainage ditch.
She was unconscious, had a faint pulse and was breathing.
She was wearing thongs and no helmet.
We flagged down a dual cab ute and loaded her into the back of it to get her off the hill and headed towards a hospital.
An ambulance (read, Toyota Hiace with just a padded bench seat in the back) meet us at the bottom of the pass.
She was still unresponsive at this point.
We never found out how she fared, however it did not look good.

    • You want to watch what your Travel insurance covers you for as well. People have been known to end up in hospital, and significantly out of pocket, due to pranging motor bikes; particularly if they don't have a motor bike licence in Australia which means their travel insurance is void.

Yes, we had all that covered.
Months of research and reading dozens of PDS I managed to find one single insurer that provided cover in such an instance.
There is also further challanges in relation to the legaility of an Aus International drivers licence in Vietnam.

It was the trip of a lifetime.
We managed to solo navigate to the now unmarked monument where the battle of Long Tan took place.

        • Sounds like a blast but I think I value my life too highly to try it :) Glad you did all the research because so many people don't, and/or cross their fingers and hope.

Just putting the warning out there for people. I keep reading these stories in the paper where people have started "go fund me" pages when they stack their bike and can't pay the bills to get home.

I always make sure I have the maximum health insurance I can when travelling abroad - I'm paranoid about the bills you could rack up in some countries.

I would love to go to Vietnam to see it but I'm shit scared of spiders - what is the insect issue like?

In my mind thats a little like Americans saying they will never go to Australia because every animal their is trying to kill you.
Vietnam is a big diverse country.
I guess it all depends where you go.
Travelling the distance we did, as I sit now I do not recall seeing a single spider.
Having said that I have no issues with spiders and may just not recall spiders as they were not signifcant to my self.

          I would definatly recommend VN.
For me Hoi An, Hue & Ha Long Bay are a must do.
          Cheap Cheap

        • @Cheap Charlie: I didn't mean to sound "red neck" there. I love to travel but I couldn't physically stay in a room that had a reasonable sized spider in the corner; it is a physical reaction I have no control over. Fear of spiders is not a rational reaction and it is not something I can talk myself out of.

In Australia my man deals with them, very "traditional" I know, or I get a large can of bug spray and spray for a long time from as far away as I can. In places with lots of spiders I just wouldn't be able to cope.

Will keep in mind the places you mentioned.

During our travels throughout the country we stayed in hotels ranging from $8pn up to around $60.
I am a little fussy and thought I might struggle with the accomodation, but was plesently suprissed.
I think you would be fine.
As the cool kids in the street say, YOLO

        • @Cheap Charlie: We have friends who have gone to Vietnam that loved the experience. My family almost got seconded to Laos in 1975, that would've been YOLO in spades.

Thanks for the info, will add Vietnam to the list of "look for good prices".
