  • I thought I saw destiny 2 for $48 second hand with a half marked price sticker on it on Sunday

    • Cool story

      • +5

        You forgot the “bro” part.

  • +15

    Do I need it? No!
    Do I want it? Yes!
    For f sake

    • +1

      Same.
      Happy with $14.09 delivered.

    • +12

I bought the steam link last time with the $20 steam gift card.
It sits on the shelf doing nothing.

      • +4

Mine was sitting an it's box unopened for about 12 months, plugged it in a couple of weeks ago to try it out, used it for 5 minutes and hasn't been touched since. I'm sure it has it's uses, it's just a little pointless for me right now.

        • +4

My wife was asking me what this little box (the steam link) that is attached to the tv was for . I told her to just unplug it as it was a waste of electricity.

        • +3

I use it to play jackbox on the family TV. The Family can sit on the couches, rather than on the floor around my PC.

I also bought one for work. It is attached to a TV in our departments meeting room with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse. We all have steam on our PC's. This gives us a low cost, very reliable, way to do a demo or show a powerpoint. Rather than attaching a laptop to a projector or trying to connect using microsoft wireless display adapter or google miracast. Aside from hard wiring to a projector, the other wireless solutions are very unreliable.

I guess, you need to have a purpose for this to be useful.

    • +5

I have one and don't use it .. still want another for this price. Might even be worth it just for the nice quality USB charger and cable.

    • +1

If you have an android media player chances are it will do a better job than the steam link.

My steam link was a bit of a POS and barely worked over wifi.

Use the steam link app on a minix media player and it is flawless.

  • Got one for pickup! Hopefully actually get to pick it up :P Thanks OP

    • EDIT: Already got pickup notification!

  • +37

I got one when it was $20. Still sits next to the TV gathering dust…

    • +1

Yeah I just bought 240hz monitor and ps4 is gathering dust.. I dont need this

      • Run home brew on your PS4 if firmware is on or below 5.05

        • Just concerned about how I will get all game files and stuff…

    • +1

Paid $80.44 for mine in 2015 (link only, no controller). I used it once to watch Dota 2 TI 2016.

I thought I would have more use for it.

    • +4

I actually use mine more as a workstation than for gaming. I can connect to my pc in the front room, which is powerful and has all my stuff on it.

    • +8

Got mine from amazon special and use it all the time. Waay better quality for streaming over wifi compared to chromecast ultra, even though it's further away from the router

      • Agreed, I do the same too. When I stream over chromecast, the video is very choppy it's unwatchable. This is way better.

      • Do u stream games only or other things like netflix, etc? Have old chromecast which I use for casting and works perfectly, but cant do amazon prime videos. Last time I tried couple of years ago, I couldn't do Battlefield 4 on it despite so many articles online.

    • +1

      same, completely useless

    • I got one and it's quite useful. A big step up from the chromecast for streaming and works great for games. I might try the app out though, I want to leave my xbox controllers paired with the pc which prevents me from starting the link with them. If I can do that with a remote then it'd be more convenient.

    • Me too, I ended up selling it the other day for $35. Pretty happy with that, considering the $20 was more for buying the steam credit than anything else :P

    • Same. I purchased it when it was $20, never used it. Then one day I thought of using it, and noticed my Android TV now has a Steam Link app, thus making the Steam Link box more useless.

    • Yeah, same. Only really use it when I have family over and have to convert the gaming room to a spare bedroom. I can play some games in the lounge room that's still free.

  • +3

Really good price for the Ni No Kuni 2 King's Edition. Destiny 2 was $15 on Amazon only a few days ago.

    • And I just bought it last week from JB $59…

Now I have 2 copies of the game …
Time to eBay it or something.

    • Clever of EB I reckon, someone must have noticed the free weekend on Ps4 and known some just couldn't resist now.

  • +3

If you have an Xbox 360 controller kicking around, and the USB Computer adapter for it, you can use that with the steamlink box,
I think playstation controllers may work too
The steam controller requires you learn a whole new system of playing games

    • +1

Would a wired Xbox 360 controller work?

      • +2

Yeah sure, I can use a wired Xbox one controller with it and there are no issues.

        • +2

I remember using Xbox one controller wired (if I remember, I also used the wireless adapter which worked fine)

        • +2

@Gaggy: side note, on the newer Xbox one wireless controller, you no longer need the wireless adapter, it connects via Bluetooth.

        • @spriggan43: Yes, I am aware of that as I have both the controllers.
Connecting with bluetooth was too laggy for new controller and almost not usable with headsets. It might be my dodgy bluetooth controller on PC, but I stopped using it.

        • @Gaggy: Never had issues with it being laggy on Bluetooth for me, but you're right that if you're using Bluetooth it won't work with headsets, it won't even give the option.

        • @BradleyDS2: It did work, but was lagging a lot for me. Playing was not fun either. Stopped using it all together. Already had the USB wireless adapter which I use or plug the usb cable when battery is flat.

    • Yea it's an amazing controller, but I can't use it.

    • +1

I can confirm my PS3 controllers work over Bluetooth

      • Did you have to do anything special to get them to work over BT? I could only get PS4 ones working wirelessly, PS3 controllers worked when plugged in though.

    • +3

Can confirm pretty much all controllers work for Steam link.

Any USB Wired, Xbox360/One wireless, PS4/3 wireless, Wii Controllers

    • is the steam controller any good compared to the other console's controllers?

  • +2

D2 is $40 on PSN with the expansion pass at the moment

    • I'd say this is a great deal, got it with the humble deal for June and then the expansions for another humble deal, later that month gave two expansions for like $25. So this combines everything for one of the cheapest prices I've seen. I'd definitely jump on this for that price as personally feel destiny is a more console or controller game.

  • How does Kodi run on this? Last time I looked there were some issues with smooth playback. Is there much point in repurposing it for media playback?

    • Don't bother trying to run apps directly on it, it's nowhere near powerful enough. If you add Kodi as a non-steam game and stream it from your PC however you'll be fine for media playback.

    • You can.
you can get an ssh root login, do a chroot, and run all sorts of Linux stuff.
Kodi has been ported, but more as a proof & fun as the Link is not really powerful enough, as above.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam_Link/comments/7l8m0g/hackingr…
      https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?8,46664

      • Any ideas on how you could use this after loading linux/chrooting to something like arch arm?

        • +2

For controlling USB devices, accessing USB sensors, security cameras.
Thin terminal. Run a display with advertising signage? …

The low cost would be good if you could buy dozens to do the same thing.
But for a one-off, just get a raspberry Pi, or other better supported ARMbian device.

    • +2

Just checked, had artifacting at the start of a 1080p x264 video, attempting to skip would cause the video to stutter and audio to desync and it wouldn't fix itself, you had to close and reopen the video.

As for the other videos I tested, audio was fine, subtitltes were fine (even styles ASS ones) and video was… a black screen the entire time. These two videos were 10 bit 1080p x264 and 8 bit 1080p x264.

Tried using the Plex addon, same problem. I was hoping that the Plex server might transcode to something it would play but it didn't.

Videos were being played directly off a USB using USBMount as the USb isn't mounted automatically.

  • Darn, there's no Steam Links in all of Metro Victoria.

Oh well, at least they accept giftcards now (not that I have any).

  • Use mine almost everyday to watch DVDs and play AC Origins. Its a bargain if you can grab one at this price.

Steam link is suddenly becoming a little useless when the app was released for Android TV

    • +1

WOT! I didn't know this. I have an Android TV! Thx mate.

    • Assuming this is why they aren't bothering with any more runs of production.

  • +4

Regularly use mine, it does a really good job but you will want to run steam in administrator mode to minimise windows issues. Having TeamViewer on your phone is also a good idea just in case windows decides to be cute and you need to close a notification.

  • I got one a few years back and I still don't know how to use it.

  • Destiny 2 shows up as $36 for me

  • Bought one - Not sure if I'll use it but 12 bucks delivered cant complain. Don't have a wired network so it might be garbage

  • I always had problems with my xbox 360 controller not sending commands or the game not seeing the commands in certain games. Worked great with dolphin emulator though even with multiple control pads.

I got sick of mucking around with it and gave up. Nine's collecting dust now too.

  • Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - King's Edition at a nice price now.

    • +3

Compared to other collector's editions that are released nowadays, the Ni No Kuni II King's Edition had some really unique and nice stuff in it. To me it was worth the $220 I paid (I also bought the USA version which had different items).

But I paid with my 28 degrees card and claimed the price difference ;) so even happier!

    • +2

Foe those looking at Ni no Kuni II King's Edition the EB Games eBay store has also marked the price down to $129 and you can use the coupon code PLATYPUS to take another 10% off the price bringing the price down to $116.10.

If only they had dropped the price on the eBay store yesterday. Too much effort to return this big ass box for a refund now lol

      • Thanks, I did just that, although I opted for delivery instead for $5 since the ones in my local stores where I could pick up have heavy shelf wear… Fingers crossed I get one from their warehouse.

      • I'm using the eBay store on my phone and having trouble finding the king's edition on ebgames store it seems to only show the standard. Can you give me a direct link to the item thanks

  • +1

    Damn no pickup on Steamlinks.

Big W is selling Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition for $39

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/final-fantasy-xv-royal-editi…

Meanwhile EB Games is selling Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition for $47 as a "Manager's Special"

    https://ebgames.com.au/ps4-231699-Final-Fantasy-XV-Royal-Edi…

Possible Price Match with JB Hi-Fi, probably not possible for EB Games due to being a "Manager's Special."

  • +9

The steam link comes with a couple decent cables as well, $5 for a cat5e and HDMI cord is a good deal even without the steam link :p

    • how long is the cables?

  • Steamlink is sold out for me. "No steam links available for delivery".

  • +1

934AM - There was 3 available, I got all the way to PayPal screen, click pay, and then all gone. Someone got in just before me and swiped the remainder.
Anyway good on you whoever you are. =]

    • They probably got refunded too

I ordered a couple but was refunded

    • You have an Android device? If yes, try the Steam link beta app
iOS users will need to wait (I think) unless the iOS app is already out.

      • Thanks I was going to pick up a "cheap" one off ebay (still ~$45)

It would be ideal if it worked with android TV boxes (xiaomi mii box 3) so may wait a while

        • Just installed it but I read some forum posts about it being laggy

        • Hm… people still want these? Might sell mine - collecting dust at the moment (second hand though).

        • @s3n: You need good WiFi. Even Steamlink works best with LAN connection. Also, some newer TVs have Steamlink client app built in.

        • @netsurfer:

They want them at $5, brand new. Your Steam Link might be worth more as a dust gatherer than going through the effort of selling it.

        • @c0balt: Yeah, even postage will cost me $8. Dust collector it is…
