Some teardown or ifixit type folks better come up with a service to upgrade 64gb to 1tb (that youtube vid https://youtu.be/rHP-OPXK2ig comes to mind) at a fraction of the $1,120 they want to gouge everyone with.

    • Voids your warranty though.

    • +4

It's a very doable and straightforward process for those that know what they're doing, you'd just have to wait for the 1TB chips to trickle down to those Chinese markets and for the reflashing software to be updated with support for these new iPads (or perhaps it'll work as is).

I wouldn't want to be voiding my warranty on a tablet this expensive though, that's for sure.

      • How do you know its only using 1 flash chip?

    • +2

I haven't looked back after iCloud 200gb, saves a bit of money on your devices and then your files are on phone, iPad, mac, apple tv etc.

      • +42

nice fake account tim I don't want to pay for iCloud

        • +2

Never said you had to Al, I’m just reporting extremely pleasant experiences with it after suffering with a 32gb iPad

Admittedly the pay per month blow is softened by AIA Vitality vouchers.

      • how do u access it when on a flight with no internet?

        apple icloudinthesky?

  • +5

It will be a price error. If you look at the other models listed they have clearly mixed up the pricing for the wifi with the wifi+4G on the Silver 64G model. The wifi only model is listed at $1749 which is the retail for the wifi+4G. In the past Mr Harvey will want the extra $$ or will cancel your order. So no bargain here.

      • +13

        Price errors are not misleading.

        • +3

LOL, yeah it's like some little kid running to their daddy whinging and complaining a trivial mistake.

        • You'd hate to work in retail, customers will find a $100 item under a $10 price tag (clearly another customer has picked it up and changed their mind, so just put it down on another shelf) and claim that it's false advertising and demand it for the price they found it at, even though the tag will say a completely different item.

          • @Raincheck: Some little crybaby negged you for this comment - don't know why. Everything you said is true!

    • +1

Either way he will complain about professionals

      • He'd be less bitter if he'd actually pay to hire professionals.

      • Damn you professionals!

    • -2

It’s costs more to make electronics smaller. Also some people don’t need a tablet to do anymore than what an iPhone does.

      • +2

It’s costs more to make electronics smaller.

actually, no it doesn't. In fact beyond the fabrication changes (yes, this outlay is expensive) - smaller and denser results are cheaper and cooler. Look at (Intel) processor and memory prices for proof. There's intrinsic cost, but then there's margin which is dictated by what the market will bear.

    • +1

you're comparing a 5/6" phone to a 12.9" tablet? lol not to mention gl trying to use photoshop on your phone haha

    • +4

OMG, SO USELESS. A comment that does nothing more than wasting your time.

Oh wait, your time is more expensive. Makes sense.

    • +7

you seem to have a habit of finding every apple related deal and commenting how much apple sucks, might want to find a better use of your time mate

      • Finding every apple related deal and commenting how much apple sucks

    • +2

There's always that Samsung/Android butt hurt person in every Apple thread.

      • -1

Same goes with Apple butt hurt person in every Android thread :)

        • +1

Nah, Apple people aren't insecure and don't need to prove to the world that they have "unplugged" from the Matrix just because they use a different mobile OS LMAO.

Also I'm typing this on an Android. I have far more Android devices than iOS, but even I feel sorry for the Android people that cry about Apple all the time.

I just saw you complaining yesterday honestly stop

I see an Apple hater. They hate us cause they ain’t us…

      • -1

Not a hater. I use Apple. It’s just I’m not a fan of Apple hype. People go nuts and lose their minds about some item.

        • +11

And here you are, going nuts over how many clicks in 20 mins.

      • +1

They hate us cause they anus what the F*** does that have to do with an anus?

        • When you go to buy an iphone, ipad, macbook… Your anus better be lubed up.

  • The new Macbook Air also appears to be on discount.

  • +4

Can someone name me a few use cases where the iPad Pro can do but my Dell XPS can't? since its cost the same.

    • +3

ipad pro Works well with graphics applications.

Apple users don't care about cost man. They just care about propping up a trillion dollar company.

      • -1

Not sure why your comment got neg. Most of what you says it's true. There are alot of iSheep around here.

          • -8

@[Deactivated]: Nah, I like Samsung. Apple is for Chinese and white people.

            • +16

              @smuggler: Right, right.

I mean it's not like Samsung or Google are billion dollar companies or anything. Really stickin' it to the man by using Samsung and Google instead of Apple!

          • +3

            @[Deactivated]: Classic deffense.

Oh you just can't afford it. I think there are people (yes me included) that can afford it but choose to get something else because they want more for their money.

Just saying. As consumers we can demand more from these companies.

            • @xoom: Hehe also to add that I'm pretty sure anyone in Australia can afford to buy one so saying to someone they can't is a lol.. it ain't no 5k + item…

          • @[Deactivated]: imagine believing that buying Apple products means you're rich

            • @mrnmt: You aint baller if you aint got the latest apple product. Its the word in the streets. Must be true.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: No! I chose not to be stupid with my money.

        • +2

I buy apple stuff. It’s expensive but my iPhone 5s from FIVE years ago is still getting software updates. My 2012 Mac is still getting OS updates.

You can pay a bit more up front or you can continue to pay again and again and again as other vendors cut their products loose.

I’m not saying I’m coming out ahead financially but I’m bit junking hardware everywhere 24 months because my product has lost support.

          • -2

@djsherly: Good for you. My Samsung S6 still get updated by me via XDA Forum with whatever ROM I like and which features I preferred. I just recently updated an Nvme drive on my 2015 Dell XPS, not sure you have an Nvme slot on your 2012 Mac. Windows is getting better each day and I just recently build a new PC with half the price of an iMac but twice the performance.

            • +2

@Wolfofwallstreet: Your comment kinda proves my point. The s6 is roughly 5s vintage, perhaps even more recent and you’re getting updates from a third party? Does Samsung still support that product?

As you say, horses for courses.

I don’t actually mind windows. The different shapes and styles of the settings apps are a bit of a hot mess but I’m rarely in there. The only thing I hate is the constant updates. If you don’t use your computer for a week who knows how long you’ll get before “windows has made some updates” and needs to restart.

I’m not sure a dev/ops approach to release is really suitable for an operating system.

              • @djsherly: Samsung does still provide updates for the S6 but I preferred to use a different ROM. You see with Apple you are only limited to 1 ROM ever. It's all about options and flexibility which Apple likes to take away from paying consumer each day.

How to spot an Android fanboi

    • is the ipad pro still running Ios version of the apps rather than full versions like photoshop etc?

    • +2

I’m not going to compare it to your XPS (I have an 17” XPS laptop, which was great in its day), but I’ve got the 10.5” 512gb pro. I upgraded as I was taking a long overseas trip and it was brilliant.

I loaded it with videos for the flights. I transferred about 9000 RAW photos to it during the trip and used affinity photo and the Pencil to make panoramas and process and upload the pics. I used it to book hotels and plan and research the next days activities.

It’s small enough to fit in a camera bag and I didn’t need to take an extra charger.

Disclaimer - I’m sure there would be other devices that are cheaper or do almost the same job (or maybe better) but for what I needed it was perfect.

      • +1

That is the reply I'm after. I can see how the iPad Pro is so enticing for some due to the reasons you have mentioned. But as for me I needs to do alot of video encoding on the go coupled with some simulation so I think I'll just stick with the Dell XPS for now.

    • +5

I must be about the only one here happily using Apple, Samsung and Google every day. Beholden to none! 😉🖖

    • +3

Anything that requires a stylus or pressure sensitive drawing like graphic's applications (e.g. photoshop, CAD) and, note-taking (taking handwritten notes over PDF's, etc.)

The iPad Pro will also probably have more battery life (mainly due to iOS's app optimisation) and there's the option of integrated 4G connectivity (if that's something that interests you).

It's also arguable more portable and you can use it while standing up (more difficult with a laptop).

Also, I wouldn't really expect Apple to deliver a product that has similar value to another company - you really are paying a premium for the brand and build quality (your own personal situation will determine how relevant this is to you, I suppose).

    • +2

The entire iOS App library? Better battery life and performance? It's not a Windows replacement, it's a different approach to the portable computer. Works great for what it is.

    • +2

My team uses iPad pros as field data collection tools. The screen size and performance works very well. And the built in GPS/LTE means the database is updated live. Very powerful in a disaster relief context. We can do the same thing with a smartphone, but it is much easier on the iPad, even if you feel a bit of a dick holding it up to take photos. But the choice and flexibility of keypad or pencil input in the field, the size and clarity of the maps make it the best option for purpose.

It has proven so good for this purpose other groups are buying them for field reporting too, replacing trimbles.

That said, with the basic iPad now supporting the pencil, we will probably go in that direction in future.

      • Genuine question. You mention clarity of maps. It's been years since I gave apple the flick due to getting a Nexus at the time from work. I remember Apple Maps being pretty shite. Has that improved quite a bit?

      • so basicallly niche use case

  • +19

woah that is one pricey tablet!

    • +14

ikr… and apparently the price is so low that it is considered a pricing error! lol

  • +9

    64gb Lul

    • Why so much - 640K ought to be enough for anybody.

  • +13

Even at discount it seems excessively priced for iOS…

  • +12

    Bought 10. Thanks OP.

    • Kick one to me!

  • Is there any discount for the 256 model

  • +1

    Will they honour this?

    • I got confirmed email order and money taken out my Amex, well authorization at this stage. See how this pans out…

      • Cheers was thinking of using the 6 months IF.

      • Pity the AMEX $50 offer just expired. If price error you will still make $50 haha.

        • Used it in Sony wh1000mx3 cans.

      • +3

Last time I bought something from HVM which turned out to be a pricing error, HVM deducted the money first then I had to wait for the refund.

This is HVM we are talking about. They take your money first.

          Harvey Mormon?

  • +5

I believe Apple is turning iPad Pro to a productive tool in such as video editing etc.64G is absolutely not enough in this case. Another concern is if HN will honour this price error.

    • -2

Works for me i use iCloud and don't video edit.

      • +1

We all know why apple is taking off 128G, right? If you editing a big file, local copy is more reliable.

        • And same with their phones, not offering the 128GB sweet spot.

    • If they honour it you still should be able to return it unopened.

    • Based on the last even more minor price error, they'll hold your money for a few days and eventually refund. Waste of time.

  • +14

I'd love to upgrade my 9.7" iPad Pro (128GB 4G) but the price of these new Pros are off the charts, even by Apple standards.

    • +5

I agree - we need significantly taller charts now.

      • +2

Someone's got no sense of humour - their seriousness level is off the charts.

  • +1

Damn that's a lot of coin. I bought a surface book with performance base for not much more.

    • Surface prices have crept up as well :(
