[WP7] Free OzBargain App

Hey Guys,

I've just done the finishing touches of an OzBargain App, and had it approved in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. It should make browsing OzBargain on your phone quicker and easier, I hope you like it :)

Description:
Browse the latest Australian bargains directly from OzBargain on your phone with this nice Metro-themed application. Read user comments, and login with your OzBargain user account to post your own.

Note: This is an unofficial app, made with Scott's permission. Please do not expect support from the OzBargain team, and send all feedback to me. You can contact me through this form: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/11740/contact

        How about Android?

  • Nice, gratz on the development.

  • Nice. Good work. Is theandroid one out?

    Congrats! Awesome app dude!

  • Good work but better suited for the forums unless this had a price and is now free ;-)
    eg. Like these posts:

maybe but ozbargain app is advertising for ozbargain so all rules should be exempt ;)

      • +2

…or he could've gotten around it by saying it "was" $500 (for 7 seconds) but is now free ;-)

  • Neat :)

If I could quibble, the text beneath the refresh button ('check new i…') is cut off, and the settings button doesn't seem to do anything, at least on my phone.

  • Good work, well done. Too bad i have a crap Nokia. Oh well, I live and dream of a half decemt smart phone in my future.

  • This is awesome! It would be even better if there w as an iPhone version, or even something like m.ozbargain.com.au

  • Can't give you a +vote until you release an Android App… Hope it will be out soon.
    Good efforts!

I dont understand……why make a Windows phone app instead of iphone and android?

    • +3

I'll try to make an android one, I dont have a Mac though and you need one to develop for iPhone. Hopefully a friend of mine will give it a go. Plus, Windows Phone's are pretty damn awesome, I have faith that they'll become big soon enough :)

    • Windows Phone is iPhone for grown-ups.

  • Android please!!!!!!!

  • Replying from the app. Nice !

  • Nice work weesals. Looking forward for an iOS / Android version of this. :)

Anyway, for consistency with our deal posting guidelines, I'll be moving this to the forums since it's a free app with no indication of being a paid app later.

Thanks pauly, sorry, I should have read that before posting!

      • That's ok, thanks for sharing though.

Was seriously thinking late yesterday about making a WP7 OzBargain client… looks like I no longer have to :) I'll send some feedback your way.

    • Thanks Withdr4wn! There are a couple extra things I want to get in it, but I needed to get it out sooner. Would definitely love feedback for features of 1.1

  • This combines two of my favourite things: WP7 and OB!

Very impressed to see WP7 get an exclusive OzB app :)

Can't wait to try this on my Focus.. thanks for creating & sharing.

  • Weesals - the link brings up ozbargain in Zune, but Zune won't let me download it. I probably just need to be a bit patient as the app isn't even found when you search the marketplace or on Marketplace Browser. But then how has everyone else downloaded it?

    • +1

It's showing up for me on the phone, I only selected Australia in the distribution countries, perhaps your Windows Live ID is set to something different?

      • I certainly do have my WLID set to US :(

I do this so I can get a few extra Zune features, devastated I can't get this app though.

I guess it only makes sense to release it as an AU only app, considering it is OzB after all, but there are probably a few odd individuals like me who have a foreign WLID for one reason or another.

Would you be as kind to release it to multiple market places? :)

Regardless - thanks for your effort!

        • +2

I've changed it to worldwide, you should be able to grab it as soon as Microsoft publishes it to the other markets.

I was thinking of doing the same actually, I really want a ZunePass! Just dont want to lose all my purchased Apps.

        • Excellent! I'll be keeping an eager eye out for it. Thanks very much :)

iOS might have 300k+ apps but it doesn't have one for OzB :)

          Cheers

  • Fantastic work mate! Great to see some love for WP7 :) App runs really well!

  • +1

Thanks! Don't have a WP7 device, but I'll make sure to get people I know who have WP7 phones to install it :)

I have now also created a Wiki page listing all the OzBargain mobile apps.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/ozbargain_mobile_apps

Many have previously contacted me regarding to iOS and Android apps actually. So they'll bubble up in no time, once this WP7 app gains popularity.

  • Is there a developer api for ozbargain?

    • Not as far as I am aware of, I was just scraping the website. I had trouble using XDocument to parse the website, so I've fallen back to XmlReader, which does the job quite well. You'll probably need to find another less-strict Xml parser for other platforms.

The RSS feed on the other hand is very well formed, but only returns ~10 bargains. And I cant find a way to get it to return the next 10.

A developer API would definitely be awesome!

      • +1

It's FeedBurner that limits the number of items to 10…

What is needed for a "developer API"? Just for getting data out, or what kind of data are you expecting to send back? Authentication? (Although whack an oauth backend to OzBargain would take some time).

RSS feeds is a good starting point. Or do people prefer JSON instead of RSS/XML? I could add a few more elements in there for example,

        • OP of the deal (username, user profile URL, gravatar URL)
        • Current number of +1/-1 votes
        • Current number of comments
        • URL to the screenshot
        • +1

Yeah, those extras would be great! Add a way to request a count and offset too, and another page for requesting the comments and forum token of a bargain, and others for logging in and posting comments. I don't think it would need any real authentication, just using a session ID when the user logs in would be fine I'd have thought.

        • Those additions to rss would be great.

JSON would be good for doing more advanced stuff such as-

          Read activities:
          -Getting comments
-Get details on a particular bargain.
-Search for bargains e.g. by tag or text (low priority)

          Write activities:
          -Voting
          -Adding comments
          -Adding deals (low priority)

  • Did an iPhone App ever eventuate from this or has someone else beaten you to it?

I noticed in the App Store there are two apps… one called Bargains (recently updated Jan 2016) and one called OzBa

Edit: Just noticed the Wiki but it doesn't included the one called Bargains
Edit2: I added it to the Wiki
