Total entry level stuff, but should give you an idea whether you enjoy fishing as such: get the 6'6'' Jarvis Walker Water Rat Spin combo for $20 after discount.

I picked one up yesterday just as a backup. For when the girlfriend wants to come along or when I'm away from home for a few days and my main rod or reel breaks. Or just in case the line tangles badly during a feeding frenzy. Nothing worse than seeing other people pulling out one fish after another and you're busy untangling a wind knot…

I don't think the more expensive gear they have at Big W (combos about $47 after discount) is worth it even even at the discounted price.

My main rod/reel is a Shimano combination Sonic + Sienna, comes down to about $80 every few months at BCF. That Sienna reel especially will last a lot longer and runs a lot smoother.

Do yourself a favour and actually go to a tackle store.

Tell them that you're new to fishing and what your budget is.

I wouldn't buy anything from Big W in terms of rod or reel.
You wouldn't know if the rod is damaged until you're onto a fish. I've seen kids play sword fights with the fishing rods all the time. Graphite is extremely fragile.

It really depends on what kind of fishing you want to do, if u want to try fishing from pier/wharfs, fishing rods up to 8 feet should be enough. Don't get expensive items if you think you're not going to use it much. Before you go off and buy the gears, make sure you get the recreational fishing license first, you can purchase it from Fisheries website of your state.

This Rovex combo should be enough to get you started:

get this tackle box combo as well:

      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/jarvis-walker-150-piece-tack…

Start with mono line first, 10-20lb max should be sufficient for general fishing, like this one:

also, get some cheap squid jigs like these, if you want to try catching squids:

      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/tsunami-pro-fish-skin-squid-…

Watch some vids on youtube on how to tie knots onto hook and tying rigs, etc…

Hope this helps and good luck :)

  • Never knew they even sold it to be honest!

    • Most stores have a pretty good range of fishing gear

  • Appears to be online, too!
