Discover one of the world’s least known destinations on our off the beaten path adventure to Abkhazia - a former Soviet republic nestled on the shores of the Black Sea. Abkhazia is a place of astonishing natural beauty, covered in pristine ancient forests, turquoise lakes, and dotted with Neolithic stone dolmens. A favourite summer getaway of Soviet dictators, Abkhazia is slowly restoring its abandoned black sea resorts and parks and breathing new life into the crumbling Stalin era tourist attractions that made it the most popular holiday destination in the USSR.

On our adventure, we'll travel through mind-blowing gorges to Lake Ritsa and Stalin’s dacha. As we venture deeper into the Caucasus mountains, we'll walk through the valley of the seven lakes and continue our journey by off-road vehicle to the remote mountain village of Pskhu where a small community enjoys life in almost splendid isolation.

Abkhazia is an urban explorers wonderland and the photographic opportunities are endless. We'll journey beyond the coastal fringes into the lesser known eastern region of Abkhazia to explore Soviet-era ghost towns. Following overgrown paths, we'll wander through an astonishing treasure trove of deserted hotels and eerie ruins in what was once a thriving mountain health resort. Along the way, we’ll learn about the seven shrines of Abkhazia before completing our expedition with an incredible journey into one of the world’s largest caves.

you can book flights to Moscow for under 500 AUD and then spend 2000 for Abhazia!
    so overpriced!

      Also, from Wikipedia:

On 28 August 2008, the Parliament of Georgia declared Abkhazia a Russian-occupied territory, a stance supported by the vast majority of the international community.

Thus, entering Abkhazia from Russia might be a violation of Georgia Law, I suppose.

We advise against all travel here due to the very high risk. If you do travel, you should typically seek professional security advice. Be aware that regular travel insurance policies will be void and that the Australian Government is unlikely to be able to provide consular assistance.

Covermore insurance provides an affordable travel insurance package for Abkhazia with comprehensive coverage including mountain search and rescue, and medical evacuation. Our company has been taking tourists and film crews to Abkhazia for more than 10 years without incident. More than 4 million Russian tourists visit Abkhazia every year making it Russia’s most popular foreign tourist destination. Australia supports Georgia’s stance and does not recognise Abkhazia as an independent state. We express no view on either Abkhazia’s claims for statehood, or Georgia’s claims on Abkhazia, but we disagree with the Australian Government travel advice which is outdated and relates to Russia’s conflict with Georgia in 2008. Abkhazia is safe for tourist visitors, especially on an escorted tour with Australian, Russian & local Abkhaz guides registered with the Abkhazian Ministry of Tourism. We additionally have an Australian support team on location in Abkhazia during the expedition. We would be pleased to provide detailed responses to anyone who would like to contact us directly for more details. Full details on the tour and itinerary are located on our website.

  • Yeah sorry na, going back to Kazakhstan for a cheaper holiday

  • Went to Abkhazia from sochi during the world cup. Rented a car, drove around myself. Cost maybe 200 a day at the top end.
