  • if only CA is on PUPGRADE , that 1660Ti would be bargain !

Well it'd be jacked up so not really…

      • +1

        CA jack off too ?

  • Great buy, before I upgraded, was able to run 1080@ max!

  • +2

Youtube reviews show this as two years old (or older).

I'm looking for an upgrade for a friend (I swore I'd never do this!). Is this still a decent card in 2019?

    Ta

    • Still decent for 1080p 60fps at medium to high settings in most titles.

Probably worth it, but purchasing a 1660 or 2060 at this point isn't too bad (if you can find a seller that doesn't jack), as the 1060 is a 2 year old model.

The 1060 can also do VR - played beatsaber at a friend's on the HTC Vive and it was great

      • Pascal is basically 3 years old at this point. You could probably do 1440p60 in a pinch (higher in eSports games), but with what we know about Turing it may become long in the tooth fast.

If they start selling the 1660Ti near its MSRP ($440), it's a pretty straight-forward buy compared to this.

    • At this price point the only real choices are one of these or an RX580, both of which are pretty much on par: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB-vs…

      • scorptec has the sapphire rx580 for $299.with 2 games.

    • Unless you're playing Nvidia biased games, would advise looking at 580s right now. You can get them $300~ (not on ebay, haven't looked at em there with coupons), and will get 2 free games with them (2 of resident evil 2, the division 2 or devil may cry 5 of think)

    • I'm running a 5 year old card that I picked up second hand 3 years ago for $300 (a 290X). Except for the massive power consumption, it still runs roughly on par with a 1060 and I'm pretty happy gaming with it.

GPUs are hitting CPU levels of holding up really well over time. Unless you're interested in doing 4K or VR gaming, you see pretty limited return on investment for spending over $300.

Unless you're interested in doing 4K or VR gaming, you see pretty limited return on investment for spending over $300.

The 1070 provides 25% improvements in frame rate compared to a 1060, the 1080 provides another 25%. It has nothing to do with interests in anything.

        • Not sure you quite get the concept of "return on investment".

The 1060 will do most games at 50-70fps on high detail at 1080p. Spending almost double to up that to 80-90fps with a 1070/1660ti just isn't worth it for most people.

Always going to depend on the individual, if they're buying this card to play Metro Exodus, or they game a huge amount, or have a 120hz screen they should maybe look at the next ladder up. But for most people there's no real world benefit to that 25% boost. Who cares if you can do 100fps in Fortnite if you're running a stock standard 1080p/60hz monitor and might be CPU limited?

    • +1

The 1660 (non TI) will be releasing in March for $50USD less. I'd just wait for that.

Or, why not just buy a used 1060? I'm sure you could negotiate one for $200 now that these new Nvidia cards are being released.

    • Depends on what your friend actually wants to do in terms of gaming (1080p, 1440p) and what games your friend wants to play.
The price drop is mainly due to the release of GTX 1660Ti. I can already see some retailers stopped stocking GTX 1070 and 1070Ti (sensible move).

GTX 1660Ti is a smart move from nVidia. GTX 1660Ti is probably the preferred 2019 midrange card now. AMD currently does not have a decent offer to counter against it (they could drop the cost of Vega 56, but it is going to cost them and RX590 looks unattractive). nVidia held off 1660Ti long enough to allow retailers to clear sufficient GTX 1070, 1070Ti and to a lesser extent 1060.

Best to treat GTX1060, RX580 in the same group and only get them when they are at bargain price.

same price 2 year ago cant believe that, AMD you really need to catch up

AMDs low end cards beat Nvidia's…

Been looking to upgrade from my 1060 3GB Windforce this week.
Managed to nab a 1070 G1 Gaming today for $300 with 6 months store warranty remaining and in mint condition.
Can also get 980 Ti's and RX 580 8GB's for around $200 if you don't mind the extra heat.
    Consider 2nd hand. :)

    • $300 from where

      • Gumtree and Facebook marketplace after haggling.
On Ebay auction they're a little dearer.

    • +1

I'm actually looking for second hand however I don't know where to begin searching. Got any advice

      • See above. I had literally dozens of browsers open the last week at home and work on refresh and contacted multiple people.

I replied to a MSI Gaming X 980 Ti for just $150 9mins after it was posted on FB but someone had already said they'd buy it.

Another person on Gumtree was selling a Gigabyte Windforce 1070 for $320 but he was far out of town.

Right now a guy is selling MSI Gaming X 580 8GB's for $180 near me.

The card I bought was adv for $400 and got it down to $300 with minimal effort.

Hopefully that gives you an idea.

        • Another great one is ebay, set it to lowest prices + postage then use accepts offers only and you offer lower prices usually score a good bargain

          • @Understandable: Yea good idea.
I participated in a few auctions but the flagship 1070's with receipt's & boxes were going for >$350 (after discount codes) + postage.
            Seems to be very competitive.

            • @Viper8: Yeah and with sending offers I usually use multiple accounts cause u only get 3 offers per item on an account

  • +1

Awesome first time post op! :)

  • Wonder what the price of 1660 gonna be since apparently its better than the 1070 which i was looking to buy

    • ~$500 mark.

      • $433 delivered here https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137392&Description=1660&cm_re=1660--14-137-392--Product

        • +1

Naturally cheaper if Imported but you should also factor in potential RMA issues, should anything go wrong in future.

          • @xuqi: Indeed, but like Amazon they're trying hard with that. I support my local but for the big stuff and the system builds its much cheaper to import.

        • Apparently local retailers may price match Newegg too…

    • Only just better by a couple %, but 25% less VRAM which may hurt in QHD in the near future.

  • These have been around 250 to 270 for a while and are the best deal in brand new graphics imo. Good for 1080 gaming right now and then great powering the tv in the lounge in a few years. I currently use a 970 in the lounge :-).

  • Any news on upcoming low profile cards for SFF build?

    • I read they'll continue to sell the 1050 Ti for SFF builds without dedicated GPU power.
Hopefully they get cheaper, as they're currently north of $200.

    • 1650 is slated to come out late March, after the 1660 and 1660ti. If the rumours are right (and at this point, they're probably pretty correct), it's targeted as a direct 1050ti replacement (75W and aimed at OEMs, which means only powered via the PCI-E port).

Pricing is between 150-200USD, so exactly the same price range too.

Depending on how quick it winds up being, I'll probably replace my 290x with one of these. If it gets in the ballpark of the 1060 then the reduction in power usage would save me more money than it costs!

  • OOS

  • At the $300 plus/minus $20 price range this would be one of the best buys.

MSY had it on a weekend special $299 but now back to $369.

AMD RX 580 8GB is the equivalent of this card. Scorptec currently has the Sapphire nitro+ rx 580 8gb for $299.

    • +1

Can get one for $240 on ebay, probably a better buy that the 1060

      • If that also includes 2 free games it is a great buy. Althought I heard that Gigabyte is not as good as what it used to be but that’s $40 to $60 cheaper than other similar cards.

        • Probably no games if it's OEM pack for mining, but for the price I don't think that's a huge deal.

  • +3

Back in stock and I can't report the deal again to get it fixed haha.

  • With GTX1650 launch confirmed (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2019/02/22/sourc…), it will be interesting. If it managed to get close to 1060 performance and doesn't require the extra 6-pin connector, it will give RX570/RX580 and 1060 some tough competition.

It might be best to hold off buying a new graphics card now unless it is a super duper bargain deal

    • i hope there is also gtx1650Ti without 6pin
