What happened? (OzBargain server was offline)

Mod — Moved to Announcement/Feedback forum. I guess the question was, what happened to OzBargain for an hour since 8PM AEST on 17 August.

  • Gee, that was scary. The website was down, then back up again showing 200 users online only.

    Er, OzBargain got OzBargained? :)

  • Same here lol. From my memory, this wasn't the first time either.
Well, at least it works now. :)

Yeah. OzBargain was off-line between 8PM and 9PM AEST this evening. The server hangs hard and requires someone from the hosting company to issue a reboot to get it back running.

Nope. Far from first time having an issue. Actually we had the same issue (server stopped responding, required hard reboot) pretty much every month since we moved to Crucial Paradigm in October last year. It has just been happening far more often these days. Just looking at the logs

    • Down for 1 hour 14 minutes today
    • Down for 1 hour on 31 July
    • Down for 20 minutes on 27 July
    • Down for 15 minutes on 19 June
    • Down for 55 minutes on 16 June
    • Down for 40 minutes on 14 June

Every single one of them requires manually issue a support ticket to get the box rebooted. Yeah it has been a bit frustrating, consider the cost of this server (a pretty big VPS) is more than the monthly cost of all my other servers adds up together. One option would be moving the server back to US. Or somewhere where I can find cheap bandwidth in Australia.

    Any bargains around?

    • That's a tricky one - bargain (Cheap) hosting is not a good solution I guess.

      • Well. Crucial Paradigm is great (and not cheap either), although I doubt their support guys are of any help resolving my kernel panic issues.

    • How come they don't provide you with a (web-based) remote reset facility?

      • I'm on their older Citrix XenServer product that does not come with a console panel.

        • how much do u pay per month? just a rough idea.

        • ~$400/month to host this thing in Australia. Yet all the deal screenshots are still hosted overseas to cut down the bandwidth (which is very expensive here).

        • why don't you want to host overseas. What's wrong with doing that?

        • overseas would mean pages wouldn't load instantly anymore, I'm sure we could cope with it though.

I'm sure we could cope with it though.

Yeah it has been running from overseas between 2009-2010, and I don't think I've received a complain about the speed of page load. However since people are used to local server now, I am not sure whether people want to send the packets across the pacific again…

But yeah, it used to cost me USD$80/month for 2 servers and now AUD$400 + USD$40. Certainly not a "bargain". Continuing to utilise local hosting rather than import cheap ones from overseas might be against the spirit of this website :P

        • That's so true! Plus if something goes wrong you can contact guys locally - there is a big difference in timing with US and sometimes you just had to wait until they wake up.

Check out this site - there's usually some decent bargains on there.

Happened again tonight. 30 minutes downtime.

Time to go shopping this week I guess — for a new hosting provider.
