    It’s a 5 year old phone

    • +7

      Mine’s 6 🥳

    • +5

Sounds like you've swallowed the Apple profit pill. Now you associate 5 year old hardware with the garbage bin, and the need to give Apple more money for a new model.

    • 400 dollar fossil, as much I like apple longevity this is pushing it

    • -1

So? How old are you? Older than 5? Do you consider yourself relevant? Exactly.

  • +18

Meanwhile you u can get a mi mix 5G grey import for the same price…

    • +7

Teenage kids will always prefer the iPhone. THat being said $299 for a 4.5 year old phone would be a better price.

      • +6

I don't think I would pay $99 for a 4.5 year old phone. Half a year of support left.

      • +2

I agree that teenager will prefer iPhone. iOS has much better parental control too. However $299 for a 5 year old phone with only 32GB is not cool for a kid.

        • +6

          Excuse me! it's $399 😁

        • +7

Kids don't care if it's a 5yr old phone with only 32GB. All that matters is it's an iPhone.

          • @Master Haggler: For young kids yeah this is true - but for kids a little older, later in high school, theyll know what the latest and greatest is. and theyll want that one.

            • @k-rokfm: FWIW, 2 kids (both in high school) at my wife's family christmas, got new iphones - an iphone 7 and an iphone 8. They seemed to be plenty happy with them!

Wife got an iphone 11 pro, and I got…her old iphone 6. lol I got screwed! :P

        • -1

That's up to you whether you want to spend $1500+ on a new iPhone for your kid.
Keeping in mind, in September it won't be "new" anymore and will be "outdated" by the newer iPhone.
Honestly, most don't mind. I still see people rocking iPhone 5S and showing it off like it's going out of fashion. Which I guess it kinda is lol.

Make sure to couple it with the Airpod Pros they are wanting.

          • +1

@pennypincher98: Might also be the SE, which looks like the 5s. Honestly I prefer the old designs. All this new ones are too big and thin.

        • Not cool for a kid ?
Get them IPhone 11 Pro Max 512Gb then !
Will be very COOL for a kid ! lol

      • +2

Hmm, maybe unil they see other teenage kids with the X or 11 versions. 6 to 8 you could get away with it because they look much the same.

      • +7

17yo teenager here. Using Galaxy S10 atm - worked my ass off to get it, my parents wont ever give me money to buy a new phone lol
But anyways nobody really cares now whether you have iPhone or not. Not sure about girls though, because I go to an all boys school

      • but teenagers are dumb and their opinions dont matter
they like iphones, artificially coloured alcohol, and taking up smoking, because they dont know any better

thats why we dont let them vote

        • If you think the teenagers of today are even slightly interested in taking up smoking you are very much out of touch. Although I appreciate your comment may be made in jest - I’m not entirely sure.

          • @ripoffmerchant: nah they all love it, with their bellbottom trousers and long sideburns

  • +3

i think this still supports ios13 for the time been, but $399? no thanks.

  • +5

I bought a refurbished 6s from eBay for my daughter for Xmas who is starting high school this year. It only cost about $250 after cashback. She's cracked the screen already :(

    • Ummm, some 6S screens were cracking by themselves, (eg just from body warmth in pocket). Not sure if it's entirely her fault haha.

      • +12

lol I'll tell her that it might not have been the impact of when the phone hit the driveway, it could actually just have been body warmth :)

  • +6

I've been on Android for 10 years now and remember when they were playing catch up. both operating systems are great now.

I will always be android because of the prohibitive cost of apple, but the Mrs is tied into apple products. That said she had an iPhone 6s a year ago, and the latest update back then made her phone snappier. It was the first time I'd seen an apple update do that, it definitely killed their new model sales.

Tldr, iPhone 6s is a more than capable phone.

    • +4

I am in the same boat. I have mostly been an Android user most my life (ever since Nokia's demise). My first iPhone was iPhone 3, which I used for 6 months before giving it away to my brother as I didn't like it. Moved to Android/ Samsung then and a few years later, work gave me iPhone 5s. I used iPhone 5s for 2 years and then I switched to Samsung Galaxy S6 and have been using Samsung since then. I was never an Apple fan, however on the other hand my wife has been using Apple/ iPhone since forever and uses apple music and still buys sh*t from iTunes etc. She now has so much paid stuff on iOS and it's hard to let go off all of that if she was to move to android, additionally she finds android complicated (dunno why!!!). On top of that, her entire family are iPhone users so they have shared family pictures folder etc., which I can't access on my Samsung Galaxy. In the end, I am kind of being forced to switch to iOS because everybody around me (my wife's family ;)) finds android too hard to use!! In preparation for move, I have been selling all my android stuff, including my Samsung watch, Bose android noise cancelling headphones etc.. On the plus side I will get to try apple watch, which I have been wanting to try for a while.

    • +2

Both systems have their problems but the worst is the support of Android phones which is appalling.

Even Google will only support their phones for a few years, you buy last years model and soon it will be unsupported. Other makers are even worse.

I have had both, iPhones are better and cheaper long term if you buy wisely.

This 6S still runs iOS 13 rather well and sure it will be unsupported soon but it is OLD. Price is a bit high though, at $300 it would be great.

      • I don't necessarily agree. My 6s battery only lasts a couple hours now of SOT. Not great for a phone that retailed towards $1k.

I don't find the usability of iPhones with PCs to be great either - especially file transfer.

        • +1

My experience is that iPhones have better quality batteries than Android phones or at least they are managed better so last longer.

Sure iPhones cost more, especially now with Apple going further upmarket and having fewer cheap phones.

Premium Android phones are even a worse deal, expensive with short and inferior support.

Cheaper and flimsier built Android phones like the Motorola's can be thrown away every three years.

          • +1

@Grok: Apple didn't go up market with their iPhone, they extends their product line up by keeping 4-5 year old iPhone in production and sell at a little but cheaper price. All manufacturers raised up price of new releases

          • @Grok: Do you know that the Androids phone range goes from $80 to maybe $2000? You can't put all the batteries in the same group

        • Macs are good with iPhones and Androids…. The iPhone isn’t the problem when it comes to usability with PC

        • +3

You just need a new battery, it's an easy fix. Apple were replacing lots of 6s batteries for free (in the US at least).

Also, if you keep your battery at 20%-80% charge (always), it will last much, much longer in the long run.

        • get a new battery
just over the weekend i changed my iphone SE battery. old one had battery health 91% which should have been okayish, but would just drain in half a day. Sometimes I'd use it for like 30mins and more than half the battery would disappear. I couldn't leave the house without a spare battery, and it'd stay plugged in whenever at home or work.

new one says 98% (it had been in a spare phone for a bit) and its a massive difference. seems to be getting through a whole day with about 50% left without touching a charger.

I think the old one must have been seriously dead, despite the stated health. wish I had changed it sooner

    • +1

I much prefer android, but the better android phones are comparable to the iphone in price these days.

My son has a 6s and its still a decent phone.

  • +7

Good price these phones still work well.

Headphone jack, decent battery and processor

Have a look at YouTube there are some tests comparing to latest models and they still perform very well

  • +10

My son and I have tinkered with iPhones, replacing batteries, screens and sometimes both, for about 5 years now. We have done about 10 phones (plus some iPads, and some Androids), including a couple of 6S and 6S Pluses. Great phones but, as stated, now over 4 years old.
Last month, my wife's work iPhone packed up. It's a 6, a terrible phone IMO, but it was attached to the job before she was. She brought it home and I said that the battery was dead, but that I could replace it. But the next day, she told me that her boss wanted it replaced and serviced by someone who could provide a warranty. Fair enough, but that's not me.
So I took it to a local phone repair shop that has a good reputation. Yep, needed a new battery, and while he was at it, he uploaded iOS again, and replaced the tempered glass screen protector, all with warranty.
When I picked it up, I said, "great job, but crappy phone".
    "Not your choice?" he asked.
"Hell no. But if it was a 6S…"
    He smiled.
"6Ss and 6S Pluses are the best phones Apple ever made," he said.
And this in a shop with a bunch of refurbed phones for sale, including 7s, 8s and a couple of Galaxy 8 Pluses.
And with that, he took his own phone out of his pocket; a grey 6S Plus.
One of which btw, is also my wife's personal phone.
Yep, $399 is not cheap, especially for a handset with 32gb, but it's still a pretty damn good handset.

    • +2

The question is how much longer will it be slated for updates given a $399 outlay.

      • +1

Exactly! Once there was Nokia. Actually the Finish government put heaps of money towards mobile technology because Finland was having 2 huge issues: Isolation with snowstorm trapping people in cars dying from hypothermia. Sadly it also became the painless choice for people having lost their jobs ending their life.

So Nokia converted a TV factory to solve 2 social issues. Sweden had a similar issue at a smaller scale but they made Ericcson to build the network and also invented the SMS especially for people in distress in remote areas. As soon as one got reception a text might saved somebody's life.

Nokia was so good at it that the young people just had to have one, take piccies, short videos and at the next fast food joint load them up to social media.

Sadly nowadays we see a trade war with China being so far ahead in technology it is no longer funny. Kids being caught between being cool or bullied being nerds.

        • +1

          R U Ok?

      • +2

@0jay; Few care about the length of time vendors deliver updates.

My Sony flip/slide phone never received a single update. Got tired waiting, went back to my iphone 4S. Some years later I looked into it (as many of the original features were permanently broken/didn't work). Turned out that Sony (and Helstra) never published a single update for it. Unusable without a (far better) community supported ROM, but it wasn't stable and had many failings too. Similar things happened to many Androids up to this point but people didn't care they just binned/drawered their old one and signed up toa new contract for a replacement. Maximum Permawaste.

Apple policy seems to be to cover their kit for a minimum of 2 years in Au at least, so I'd say iOS 13 will remain supported on 6S for some time yet.

        • Support is not region specific and the question is to updates, 13’s going to work on a 6S regardless of future OS support.

          • @0jay: Global policy underpins support in each region.

Updates are vital to supporting the warranty programs in each jurisdiction.

Yes the device will continue to work on 13, but support is about how long updates are delivered to the device, as well as the OS it runs. If iOS 14 is released with support for 6S, they will probably can support for iOS 13 around the same time, which IIRC is what they have been doing for a while now.

            • +1

@resisting the urge: You sir, are talking out your ass.

You've got the general idea but no real grasp of that of which you speak.

              • @0jay: OOO. Care to 'shine some light'? Obviously I can't see for the sun in here ;-)

  • +4

It was $399 about more than 1 year ago at Target. Scored 2x, sold one and use one (still my daily driver phone now). Was a bargain that time but not now. Should be priced closer to $300 now IMO.

  • +1

I purchased an android phone for my mum and I tested it for some hours.
I have to say android is getting better but still not as good as iOS. To much rubbish software, each app is try to ask as much permission as possible. And all the apps are trying to run background.

I still think if for kids or old people, go for IOS.

  • +1

Was a good phone, but price is probably higher then it should be. They'll sell out given they are still iPhones and popular even if they are old. Good screen, headphone jack, and home button.

    • Timing is good given all the parents with kids starting high school in a few weeks who will be looking for phones for them.

    • price is probably higher then it should be.

Yes $399 or-less should be iPhone 7 price.
iPhone 7 32GB is available for around $450 (still too high IMO) after OW price-beat $479 @ Telstra, if you settle for the dongle.

  • +1

Nicely crafted piece of art. Best thing is the mechanical ringer switch.

Bought one to control a 360 camera that only accepts the lightning socket. Worst decision ever made. Even a stone age Samsung turned to be more responsive.

Yeah give it to a fruit phone brainwashed kid. We had to go thru it with 2 kids knowing better. Career loss in exchange for being cool. Sad story!

  • +1

I'm pretty sure you get a year of the Apple + streaming service with this as well

  • Aren’t these discontinued from Appel as in no more updates and the like

    • +1

Just Googled and 6s should get the 14 this year as the last update. If you just want a spare phone and it has to be an iPhone its probably ok.

      • If you want a spare phone there's cheaper options out there.

        • Is there a cheaper iPhone option? For Apple fans. I don't really care, but some users just have to have an iPhone. I think for an iPhone its probably ok was what I was saying.

  • Good kids phone, has been significantly cheaper in the past though.

  • -4

6s is very slow to open apps under current ios. Don't buy it.

    • +2

      false

    • +1

      Really? Mine works great.

Facebook is a major culprit on most phones, their software stack (not just fbmessenger) has a massive footprint and is very resource/data hungry.

Remove the app that is killing your phone and it will work better*

Note: *sometimes app removal may not do the trick, sometimes a phone needs to be reset to recover from some versions of some apps.

    • +1

6s plus with ios 12 works well.

  • I'm giving my kids a Nokia 5110 when the time comes for them to have a phone.

    • Poor child. They will be bullied at school lol

      • +10

They could beat the bullies up with the 5110. Doubles up as a weapon.

        • LOL smart thinking. And the weapon only needs to be charged once a week!

  • Partner has had a 6s for a few years. I think it's only 16gb and is struggling with space. Ive always been android and just chuck in an SDcard for extra storage.

Apple have anything like that yet? Probably all cloud based I guess.

Trying to convince her to try something else before paying for a new iPhone. Any good transition launchers to make an android phone feel iPhone ish?

    • When all your girlfriends have it its hard to convince them to switch. Apple do make good phones. For the money however there are better options. She could go Android, but you may find she doesn't like it and you'll end up having to get an iPhone anyway.

      • The mobile experience is pretty much same same nowadays. There might be some things here and there that are unique to Android/Apple, but on the whole, they're so similar now, those who aren't all that tech savvy won't notice it much.

  • I am still using a 6s Plus as my daily phone from the Target deal a year ago, my only real criticism would be the camera quality. Still a very capable phone and likely to get ios14

  • I got the 6s when it was first released. It has been well used every single day.
The "silent button" switch unfortunately packed up, but everything else works just fine.

Such a good, solid, capable phone.

Sold it to a gentleman who wanted a first phone for his young kid. I was sad to see it go. Served me well.

The fact that Apple continued to support the 6s on iOS13 and made it faster and far more capable than when it was first released convinced me to buy Apple again.

    • 6+ and 6S+ are both solid if you don't overload them with apps

All ours are running strong after 7 years daily use.

In 6S the batteries need regular replacement (easy to do and only $10) as they are small and lose charge more each day. If you use it a lot, it can run out.

In the larger 6+ and 6S+, batteries are bigger and last us 2.5 years.

You can use a 6+ battery in a 6S+ too, to see even more battery life

Not sure I'd buy this now though if I needed one, 7 plus will be on run out pricing next

      • +1

All ours are running strong after 7 years daily use.

        7 years? 6S/6S+ were released 25 September 2015, and 6/6+ were released 19 September 2014…

        • +1

"You’ve got to come back with me!"
          "Where?"
          "Back to the future!"

          • @Slugoid: Indeed. Bought the 6+ in early October 2015

            • @resisting the urge: So you're from 2022? You've used the 6+ , bought from October 2015, for 7 years. Can you tell me who've the US president in 2020? Just hope it's not Trump again. Maybe tell me who's the Melbourne Cup winners are for 2020 and 2021 while you're at it.

              • @Slugoid: @Slugoid; Just felt like 7yrs when I wrote it. No need to get so worried about the future, All I can tell you is that few will be getting there given what's going on now, let alone then.

  • +1

Will somebody do me the favor to chuck this in the bin.

    Thanks

    • Done. That'll be $400 thanks.

  • I bought this phone for this price two years ago so it's not a great bargain, having said that the iPhone 6S is still a solid phone, runs the latest IOS, has 3D touch and 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • -6

the 6 (6s) PLUS is very problematic. I had one that was in a kept in a great phone case, and lasted only a few months before the all too common IC Touch disease. So badly built and designed..
It isn't worth the risk. Apple deny the design fault, and aftermarket repairers probably will not even touch them anymore.
    Look it up !

    • if that was the case, you could've just returned it?

      • Again… look it up!. Apple don't accept the fault. An horrible company

        • The 6S doesn’t have the same design fault that causes touch disease in the 6 models.

  • +1

Doncaster, VIC out of stock both colours.

  • After using Android since 2011, at christmas event I lost my Samsung Note 8, as I gave away all my spares so I was given a spare a 6S 16GB.

Using my mates iphones to take photos, watch a random you a video etc, I built the impression that they were pretty basic, iPhone form factors never really did it for me, software seemed way to restrictive, but after using this 6S as my day to day for the last month It definitely changed to a positive view on iOS. (havent used iOS to much since the 4S)

I think the 6S size is the perfect size for my usage, it encouraged me to keep it simple. if you needed to do more it would encourage me to hop on a PC / tablet, compared to using my note and trying to "multitask'. the 6S is also one of the lightest of the family,
    http://socialcompare.com/en/comparison/apple-iphone-product-…

Also alot of my apps iOS counterparts I can say are alot more streamlined and fluid compared to Android.

    TLDR;
IOS has improved since you probably last used it, surprised me.
iPhone 6S is weight to size ratio imo is perfect.
Worth 400? If youre looking for entry into the apple environment yes. Bang for your buck in terms of specifications; hell no.
Final rating for what it is in 2020: 8/10

  • Overpriced.
