Do people REALLY still pay for AV software? Especially one as perfomance-killing as Nortons?

    Wow, how 1990's LOL

Your opinion must be from usage in the 1990's? Most of the Norton deals that I have been posted on Ozbargain over the past few years, there have been quite a fewe positive comments made by recent users of the product.

It seems that a most people that make negative statements about the product (on these discussions) are the ones that have not used the product for quite some time.

I would certainly pay for a product if it has value, and $25 is certainly a good price IMO.

Llama is not "so 1990" & many would agree with him.

In 2011 Nortons is still a massive resource hog and many performance tests show that it is a long way from being king of the hill.

Microsoft Security Essentials (100% free) does the job fine as does many other products out there.

With most I think it is the fuzzy warm feeling from buying something in a box regardless of whether it does the job or not.

Having used all the free (AVG, AVast, MSE) ones, I can say having protection of any sort is better than none. MSE is a good product I don't deny that.

$25 equates to just over $8 a machine (assuming you use all the licenses). I don't buy a boxed product for a warm and fuzzy feeling, but because I believe it is a worthwhile product to have installed on my system.

I can say looking at my task manager of several computers I have it (Norton 360 v5) running on that it is not a "resource hog" and I can't see any noticable performance degredation either.

Precisely, and there are a absolutely MASSIVE number of people who think that same.

I've been involved in computers since the mid 1980's. I've lost count of the number of computers I've fixed after they were infected by Nortons, and I honestly don't care if they have improved in recent years…. I'd never trust them again.

So, no thanks, I am not in the slightest bit interested in even "testing" it. Good luck to those you are willing to take the risk.

      • I would certainly pay for a product if it has value

So would I. But as a keen OzBargainer I can see absolutely NO value in paying even $8 per computer for AntiVirus software.

  • Just got one. This is a good deal.

Everyone has their own opinions about AV software. Personally I find the free ones ok (and definitely better than nothing) but not quite at the level of Norton 360. The free ones are also typically pure AVs only where this norton provides a more comprehensive package.
