[iOS, Android] Duet Display 50% off - $14.99 @ App Store, $15.99 @ Google Play

150

It appears that Duet Display is currently 50% off in the App Store and Google Play. With more and more people working from home, this app could be a good temporary solution for using your tablet as a second monitor until this entire coronavirus issue blows over (although who knows when that will happen), or you could use it as a stop-gap solution whilst you wait for a monitor to be shipped to you.

I should note, you may need admin privileges to be able to install the software onto your work computer. Before purchasing this app, download the software for your work laptop/desktop from www.duetdisplay.com and try to install that first. You need to install the software on both your devices to get it working.

Description from the App Store is as follows:

No. 1 best-selling iPad app in US, Japan, UK, Germany, and 17 other countries!

Duet turns your iPad or iPhone into the most advanced extra display for your Mac & PC. Developed by a team of ex-Apple engineers, Duet offers unparalleled performance and display quality - all with zero lag.

Description from Google Play as follows:

** 50% Off For A Limited Time **

Duet turns your Android phone, tablet, or Chromebook into the most advanced extra display for both Mac & PC. Developed by a team of ex-Apple engineers, Duet offers unparalleled performance and display quality - all with zero lag.

  • can it connect through wifi?

    • Only if you pay for the $5 a month subscription.

This is the normal price though. Probably they plan to increase the price due to the demand.
You need to pay extra monthly/yearly to connect through wifi.

    • Hmm really? It says 50% off in the App Store…

After a search an older deal appears where someone commented that the price went to $20, so $14.99 was 25% off.

      • The price history says it has been $9.99 USD for a while

Still, it probably will go to A$30 once the promotion is over

        • Huh that's interesting… kind of dodgy that the App page says 50% off then.

    • isn't this software replaced by apples native 'sidecar' setup?

      • It has been made redundant. But not all Macs can use Sidecar. From memory you need a modern-ish Mac.

My 2013 iMac doesn’t cut it.

        • I think it relies on the x265 codec which is hardware native to newer 2016+ macbook's.

If you have a Mac and an iPad do not purchase! This is now built into macOS.

    • You need a relatively new Mac though, older models are not supported (eg. pre 2018 MacBook Air)

    • Good point, but with Sidecar you need a 2016 and newer Macbook/iMac. Duet Display should work for older Macs with MacOS 10.9 or later.

      • Oh and I had a look it does windows too.

PSA & FYI, if you use this on a machine and play games it will cause issues with nVidia drivers (for G-Sync Monitors). I found out the hard way after I had multiple issues with dropped frames, monitor dropping signal completely. I'm unsure if Duet devs have bothered to fix these driver issues.

It was a pain to isolate and diagnose when I was having issues. Had to completely remove it (including the service.msc win10 module), then no longer had issues.

I'm unsure about Synergy and/or Sharemouse remote access apps (if they have the same issues as I've listed above). YRMV.

  • If you want to use your Windows 10 PC and Android, you can also try SpaceDesk. It is free and it works very well.
