Wish our dollar picks up soon for the price to get to $300

    • +4

:) It seems a far cry though.

    • +3

Agreed. That's a terrible exchange rate. Over 60 countries are pegged to USD. Annoys me when I travel and secondary option for payment is USD. not sure why the world worships USD

      • ever wonder why they have the biggest military

  • +20

NFC away from being a dream phone.

    • and OLED screen

        • +4

          That's funny

        • +1

converted my wife from iOS to the redmi note 8 pro very easily. The launcher is very similar to iOS and adjusting was easier than we imagined.

          • +2

@DarthAntz: I hate iOS, I use a pixel launcher on my note 8 pro

        • -3

          Whoosh

        • +1

Best downvoted comment ever, and I think Iphone is silly.

    • +3

Ahh damn was about to ask if this would be a decent move from and old S7 edge but I use NFC payments all the time. No can do

      • Would be great without Chinese Govt snooping

    • -1

      And wireless charging

      • +2

Can easily go with out, you can still charge the phone. NFC has no alternative.

        • +1

I prefer wireless. I’m set up for it. Without it, I’m not going from iPhone to Xiaomi. And I want to, my gf did and she loves it.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah I get it, I just feel like wireless for most is a nice thing to have, whereas NFC is a must. I went from a Galaxy Note 9 to a Pocophone to a Mi 9T and the only think I missed on the Pocophone was NFC.

            • @Fabio08: so you went from the note 9, a flagship to the pocophone a flagship killer thay was from the same generation? you know that flagship killers are for people who cant afford flagships right

              • @MattL600: Yes, but I love testing technology. I hated the Samunsung interface, the gestures and Bixby so I sold it and went back to Xiaomi. Loved the Pocophone but didn't like the notch and missed having NFC. My 9T seems to tick all the boxes.

              • @MattL600:

you know that flagship killers are for people who cant afford flagships right

I can afford to buy one but choose not to. Got better things to spend my money on than an overpriced flagship phone.

The Mi 9T is what I bought as well.

  • Price to performance is good on this phone.
I think the Mediatek chip in the note 8 pro performs better or around as good as the 730G. This phone has a similar camera setup with 4 cameras as does the Note 8 pro. plus the Note 8 pro is cheaper making it the better buy?. I think the Note 9s will win in battery life seeing as the 720G is a 8nm part.

    • +1

I got the note 8 pro for $250.. can't even compare

    • +6

I believe in benchmarks and tests the difference between the MediaTek and 720G were marginal. Snapdragon have the benefit of custom ROM support and improved power efficiency.

      • Only major thing would be updates now the 9 series is out how long will Xiaomi support the 8 series?. My Mix mix 3 5g is still on android 9.

They have a working Gcam for the Note 8 pro plus custom roms.

        • The normal Mi Mix 3 only had its Android 10 / MIUI 11 update out of beta about 3 weeks ago. We can only hope the 5G gets the same treatment.

I looked it up and it seems Xiaomi released the kernal source for the MediaTek models. That usually doesn't happen - hence the lack of Custom ROMs.

        • Mi Mix 3 5G was a weird outlier. For some reason Xiaomi have dropped it like a hot potato.

        • I'd say they have custom roms with an asterisk, yes they work but there's a fair few bugs they still have to work through and NFC isn't working on any of them. They've had the sources released very early on but the issue they've been having is that there's no way to unbrick phones in the event of a programming mishap without some Xiaomi Developer account…

Ditto with the Gcam, it's working but it's had a fairly buggy history and it's not working flawlessly like with most Qualcomm devices which is to be expected seeing as they're geared to work with Spectra ISP's.

It's the main reason I haven't bought one sadly, since the G90T looks to be a good performer especially for the price.

          • @Kikkoman56: I can't find a Gcam that fully works with my Mi Mix 3 5G either i have tried a few.

      • +1

        And SD supports GCam…

  • +1

Mi Max 4 i'm waiting for.

    • +7

It's a shame they discontinued the Mi Max line.

    • I'm with you.. I have a Mi Max 2 and now using a Mi Max 3..
Great phones, great screens, just need some decent Android 10 custom ROMs for the MM3 and I'll hold out for the next big screen Xiaomi (at a decent price).

The black shark 3 Pro 7.1" screen would be awesome, not so the price.

  • +2

    Almost perfect, but no NFC.

Xiaomi has a problem with their confusing product lineup. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro which is at least $100 more expensive is almost an identical phone. It is interesting to see Oppo (realme) and Xiaomi competing in the global market by offering value for money just to grab more market share.

  • Whats the current status on air freight from China?
    Anyone know

    • +4

No issues here. I've been having orders shipping to myself here in AU since CNY without issue.

  • Does it have a dedicated MicroSD slot?

  • Hey Clear, any deals for the Redmi Note 8T? Cheers

  • +4

Awesome but Nfc would be great

  • Aside from Haptic feedback and a slightly better cpu, this is sort of a downgrade compared to Mi9t.

    • +1

Different line I guess, Redmi Note vs Mi line. The Mi9T, has the better design IMO, AMOLED screen, better camera sensor & NFC. The RN9S has the bigger battery & SD card slot. The RN9S has a side mounted FP sensor which is likely quicker & more accurate than the under display FP sensor on the Mi9T & the CPU difference is negligible.

      • I mean, the camera itself sells me the phone. Heck, the phone is so cheap that the k30, which is what the Chinese version of the that series is called, is going to do away with the pop up cam, just to keep cost low, and give the pro version a differentiation factor.

    • Redmi is intended to be their budget line, while the Mi series is intended to be their flagship line. Though Redmi has been creeping closer to the same level as Mi in recent models.

  • I'm currently running an old LG G6 which is obviously old tech, but is running a lot better since a recent software update. Would this be a significant upgrade to warrant buying or are there better options out there in this price range that also include a MicroSD slot?

  • +1

    This or Xiaomi Mi 9T?

    • +6

Mi 9T. I love everything about mine.

    • +5

I've got a 9t pro, I'd wager it's a significantly better phone given the price and model line differences.

That said, this is a lot of phone for $400 dollarbucks.

      • +1

Thanks for the replies. I did look at the MI 9T a while back, but the lack of SD Card slot was the only reason I didn't get it.

    • +1

I've had a Mi 9T for about 1.5 weeks and the only real complaint I have is the fingerprint reader. It's a bit "slow" and inconsistent (sometimes unlocks instantly, sometimes takes 2 tries). Adding my finger a few times seemed to have helped with that. You also have to be very deliberate with your finger placement.

I'd recommend using Xiaomi ADB Fastboot Tools to remove all the Xiaomi bloatware.

      • Great tool but there's still some bloatware it wouldn't remove on my MI 10.

I'm considering flashing xiaomi.eu but not sure if that's even worse from a security/privacy perspective.

        • +1

Yeah there's still the security app which isn't removable from the Xiaomi tools software, probably because it'll break something.

There's also the XPrivacyLua EdXposed module if you want even more privacy, tho it will stop SafetyNet from passing.

I bought a realme x2 pro for $300USD last night on aliexpress, only to receive a message from them today blaming a 'bug' from the 328 sales and offering me a $2 voucher in place. usual price is $430USD. Seller was the realme store. Depressing.

I must learn to screenshot those deals in future, as better records with the claim.

    • +1

You might be surprised to learn that the "realme Official Store" on AliExpress is run by the same crowd as the "Xiaomi Official Store", "Lenovo Official Store" and others. Misleading if you ask me.

      • Oh yeah. I always check the number/volume of sales, and go deep in the comments. Very good point!

    @Clear

When do you expect to ship Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G

    Mi 10 Lite 5G features a 48MP AI quad-camera setting and a 6.57’’ AMOLED TrueColor display. Featuring a Qualcomm®️ Snapdragon™ 765G (7 nm) and an integrated X52 modem. Kryo™ 475 chip processor,LPDDR4X and UFS 2.1, 4160mAh large battery and up to 20W fast charge with QC3.5 and FFC support.

    • +1

Specs almost perfect - but no IR blaster! Aaaaaaaa

    • It's too early to say at this stage given how it was only just announced. They'll see how much stock they can procure and will go from there.

  • Honest question here, does no one care that phones seem to be getting back to 2015 size and thickness? 8.8mm and 200+grams is far too thick and heavy in my opinion.

    • +2

Did you see the battery size in the specs?

      • Of course I did that's why it's far too heavy

        • But not all phones have this size battery.

Maybe this isn't the phone you are looking for.

    • +5

People have realised that battery life is a genuine selling point on a phone now

    • Xiaomi will offer Mi Electric Prodder mod for this phone soon. When attached, it turns your phone into a mini shocker drawing current from the massive battery.

  • I just worry about the shipping, could take long time.

    • +2

It has free priority shipping. Should only take a week or 2.

  • +1

This Xiaomi is not for me, although I'm a fan of the companies products.

Take me to school, apart from phone payment, why is everyone so hung up on phones that don't have NFC?

    • Contactless card payments? Beeeeep and then drinngggggg when you pay 😊

      • Is that the total worth of NFC? Payment with a ding?

I'll stick with my Halo ring and non-NFC phone for now, if that's all.

        • +2

Once you go NFC you never go back.

          • +1

@SonOfATightASS: Sounds like it.. that ding after CCP is a game changer.

            • @TravHall: I use HSBC debit card, albeit having some really good credit cards. Why HSBC debit? Gives me 2% cashback on transactions below $100. Not even the my AMEX or Diners club can match that in points.

              • @gezza90: But HSBC don't have a payment ring.

This is a ring that has no batteries, can be taken swimming and running, without carrying my phone.. buying whatever I need when I want.. why would I want HSBC or NFC?

    • because the previous redmi notes (8t and 8 pro) had NFC… its back step in some sense.

  • Anyone know the life expectancy of a redmi Note 7 pro? Lol

    • I still have a Redmi note 3 pro (SD650) and it still gets security updates and MIUI 10…

  • retail price in Malaysia is 899MYR (350AUD) so im sure the price will go down… I'm just waiting for the Redmi Note 9T (or whatever one with NFC will be)…

  • Very similar specs to TCL plex.

    • Similar but things like the CPU, GPU and display are worse in the Plex.

      • That's funny, Plex has superior display albeit smaller size. TCL Plex display is HDR capable IPS panel, Note 9/9 Pro are mediocre IPS panel.

  • Gearbest new discount makes price comparable.

    • Care to share? I had a quick look and it's showing as out of stock at Gearbest. Not to mention the shipping price and the GST they add on at checkout.

  • Gearbest new discount makes price comparable. Sorry was showing recently but now unavailable. My sorry.

  • Anyone know the best place to get a Mi note 10 Pro (256gb)

Was kind of okay with paying Kogans $840 but they said they expect it to leave the warehouse within 1-2 weeks.

  • +1

    Way to heavy at 209g

  • @ Clear just wondering if the phone is pre-installed with google dialer or xiaomi's own app? thx

  • What does everyone think about this deal vs Oppo Reno Z https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/528868 ?

Oppo is equipped with 8GB ram, amoled screen, NFC, B28. But it loses out in terms of SoC (Mediatek P90) vs SD720 on the Xiaomi.

  • Just missed out, the code expired for the phone…

  • +1

    Any deals on mi 9t?

  • Hi Clear,

I recently bought the phone, but the glass back got damaged in transit.

    I opened support ticket #AF1024791983.

    Thanks!

    • What's your order number?

      • Order number was #5178696

        • Thanks. Customer service have replied.

          • @Clear: Went to AusPost in the morning, they claim it was not their fault and closed the case.

I have attached details in the ticket.
