    • Is it legal to smoke weed in Australia? (Honest question, no other intention)

      • if it was I wouldn't have to buy something to hide the smell ..
Hopefully in the future .. sssshhhhh

        • not necessarily. smoking cigarettes aren't illegal, but people hide the scent anyway out of courtesy.

      • I believe the Australian capital territory has allowances that are seperate from the other states. I don't believe it's legal, however there's medical licensing that is in a few different states.

Also, for OZB investors I would be looking at positions in green pharmaceutical/retail. It's much closer than you think, canopy has their HQ for Australasia in Melbourne

  • Great price - bought one months ago for $220+ from an eBay deal. I've got asthma and pretty bad hayfever allergies and I feel I've definitely benefited from this. Air in my room does feel cleaner and I wake up feeling more refreshed (after using night mode) come spring time. Highly recommend :)

    • same - great to use whilst doing a weeks worth of laundry folding, changing bed sheets etc. No more hayfever sneezesplosion and runny nose for 2 hours

  • Just moved into a small apartment and originally didn't think I'd need one of these.

We've been struggling with getting rid of smells throughout the apartment after cooking (bacon, curries, pasta, etc)

Can anyone that owns one in a small apartment testify to it getting rid of unwanted smells and smoke?

    Thanks

    • Buy a bbq and cook outside.

  • waiting for Kogan to drop in price hopefully

    Train of thought:
    - Step 1: What is this? Why would I waste money on these gadgets.
    - Step 2: Let's quickly read up on it, so at least I know what I am dismissing.
    - Step 3: Bought one.

  • Thanks got one!

  • Wow so cheap, I already have a small Heller air purifier and I'm conflicted whether to buy this or not

  • +4

Bought one but ended up the same price for me ($199.99) as from ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-Mi-Air-Purifier-3H/124181…

    • I can see that
thats where the privilege of 'living area' kicks in.
      I got 2 for 380
      yay savings?
      lol

      • 2 would be $393 for me. But already had one from gearbite when it was ~$230

    • That EBay deal would definitely be cheaper than Dick for people in WA when taking into account postage. Plus you'd get a bit back from Cash Rewards. Not sure how good that seller is with after sales/warranty. I suppose can't be any worse than Dick or Kogan from past comments ;-)
Edit: Noting that seller has only 1 to sell!

      • Yup and "No returns accepted" is just weird.

        • +1

"No returns accepted" is normal with some stores (as well as private sellers) to prevent change of mind. Regardless, EBay's policy allows you to return if the item is faulty or not as described.
Having said that, I don't think the seller is an authorised Xiaomi seller (his/her profile is not a store and he/she has one unit), so using the image with Official Stock logo is misleading.

    • I used that link but sellers account had issues. Tried contacting my credit card company, ebay and PayPal all morning. In the end i just got the one through xiaomi Australia (259.99) and used ebay guarentee to get ~$78 ebay voucher.
Also complained as ebay support initally told me to contact paypal and my credit card company, got $15 voucher too.

Does anyone know if you can operate this without the app?

I want something that can be easily-enough operated without other devices, for those who aren't quite as tech-literate. If it can be controlled and settings changed from the unit itself, then that'd be fine.

    • +1

      It definitely can :)
      Got on-board controls

App is just for nerds like ourselves :p

      • +1

Nah, nerds will toss it into Home Assistant like I've done :p

    • The OLED display have a button underneath that provides basic operations (on/off).

      • and changing between the different modes.

        • yeah you just wont be able to dim the light and turn off the beep noise i guess

  • +1

    $12.55 shipping for me :)

  • So I need an au adaptor and it has an international app version?

  • +1

I have the Pro. While the fan works and I presume it filters air, the particle detector hasn't worked since day one. Should've sent it straight back in hindsight.

    • Captain Hindsight to the rescue

can't you contact anyone for warranty or to try and hjave it repaired?

    • what do you mean the particle detector has not work? I had pro model as well, the highest number is to go around 30-40…

      • Read online that it's usually incredibly inaccurate? Is this true?

    • Do you say that because it's always on 001? I thought same thing, but if you spray an aerosol near it, you should see it react.

Over the months since the last deal it's gone over 10 a few times and gone into overdrive, but it nearly always sits on 001 so I guess the air here isn't as bad as I thought it might be.

was contemplating if i should buy one.. don't have any allergies, but notice my room gets pretty dusty, some dust on table side and on top of bed frame. hope this will help.

    • +5

i've had many filters over the years and none worked for getting rid of dust completely. To remove dust, you need a filter that is strong enough to move air, at the expense of noise which I cannot tolerate. Yes I have scheduled for the filter to run on full speed when I am out of the house, but most dusts are from human clothing and even skin. A good case in point; I've gone on a 1 month holiday, and had the house cleaned the day before I left. When i got back, there is no dust like when I am living in.

So now I am back to just using dry microfiber and wiping down surfaces as soon as I cannot bear with the sight of dust. Floor gathers a lot of dust too, but this can be tackled by running your roomba or equivalent daily. This has slightly reduced dust on surface like lamps and etc.

      hope this helps

  • Can u pay with Kogan credit?

  • +1

    Thanks OP, bought 2.

  • So cheap now. No more air pollution knew it

  • +1

    Thanks Op. bought one.

  • +1

how does it fare with removing cooking smells - I currently do a roast pork and the whole house has the porky scent for the entire day!

    • +1

      Perfect for the job! :)

The filter inside of it is carbon infused HEPA , The carbon part takes care of odors while the actual filter takes care of different pollutants! :)

    • i'd think that if you regularly make cooking smells and you use the device to remove those smells, you'll end up replacing the filters more often. Something to consider

      • what would be a better alternative though. I already have a commercial rangehood on when cooking to extract air out but that doesnt seem to get rid of the oven smells since it's placed in a different position of the kitchen and the joy of open living means smells (pleasant or otherwise) waft through everywhere

    • +1

Pretty well. Housemate cooked the other day and my 3H kicked into high gear and the air was noticeably 'cleaner' in about 5 minutes.

  • :( how can this cheap.. bought AU version not even arrived, extra $50 for au cable

  • I use other Xiaomi and Aqara products which connect to Chinese Mainland version of Mi Home App. Where can I find a China version of the purifier, preferably from Aus?

    • I'm afraid I would resort to AliExpress with proper shipping instead of some lame free-shipping option :(

      • Or what if you setup some Siri commands within the Aus version of mi home app and then continue to be in the China Mainland version?

        • bruh, no idea, im just a shopaholic :(

  • love mine, but then i found this review that reckons it works worse than a 20$ fan with a hepa filter rubber banded onto the front

    https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/xiaomi-auto-mode-leaves-…

    • +1

That was an old model from 2016!

      • true, is it the same HEPA filter though? they are just ramping up how much air goes through it (and considering i run mine in low mode most of the time…….)

Having said all that obviously i bought a second one xD

        • +1

I am not sure if it uses the same filter, but according to that article, the issue was more to do with the processing logic of the unit, not the filter.

The data shows that the Xiaomi has a loose standard for “safe.” The Xiaomi is turning off when PM2.5 reaches 40 micrograms, which is far higher than even the WHO’s 24 hour limit. And it’s far higher than levels where we know PM2.5 has serious health effects from empirical research. Then it turns on again when PM2.5 gets up to 70 micrograms—almost three times the limit.

If Xiaomi has fixed that in their newer models then it should be ok. I might have to observe my unit a bit more in Auto mode to see when the fan kicks in.

  • I bought the mi air purifier pro, and the auto modes falsely advertised, does not work the sensor, only full mode but the noise is so loud (not all bad) then throttles down after 1 hour, absolutely great on full mode but I feel the concepts flawd because the HEPA filter should be on top for when particles fall, and the fan sucks down creating a vortex where the fresh air spreads down making it much more effecient.

Otherwise the device must be put in a very high place, so I cannot see the benefits of the pro version.

    • +1

Ok, but this is the 3H.

  • +2

Struggled for a good two hour debating with the wife why the heck we need one of this in Australia…

    Refresh OzBargain multiple times later…

Saw the upvotes gone past 140+… Then just bought one for don't know why… 😑

    • Checkout the comment underneath yours, he's not wrong.

  • +4

Just feel weird everybody overseas said Australia we have good fresh air but we still need Air Purifier.

How can people from Hong Kong and Beijing survive XD.

    • +9

TBH, you got me thinking - you're genuinely so damn right.
People from way worse places LIVE and live LONG and live OKAY.
So why would WE need this when we're so privileged… Its not like we're in a bad place.

      Cancelled my order ♥.

      • Yeah it's only really necessary if you suffer from allergies.

      • Ha. I ordered the 2H a week ago and ended up cancelling for the exact same reason.

      • Now don’t make me cancel my order too. Well good for allergy but mine is not that severe. Good for cooking odour though. Still thinking about cancelling :p

      • +4

Asthma and allergies sufferers it helps alot

        • +3

Agreed. My son has asthma and allergies. We only turn it on when we need (about once every two months) and leave it off for the rest of the time.

It's great to have because when we need it, we really need it.

        • -5

Medical reasons aside - Us healthy people shouldn't play-pretend sick or vulnerable.

          • @The Milk Man: Thats a little wrong to say

            • @asa79: I think people misunderstood, but that's okay people like being sensitive.
I said - besides people's MEDICAL need for this

US - HEALTHY PEOPLE , can't excuse needing this.

              What wasn't nice about that?…
              lol

              • @The Milk Man: I dont need it, but it does make the room feel less stuffy, less dust in the air etc

              • @The Milk Man: When you see how much dust and stuff is on the filter you can think how much of that you probably been breathing in while you sleeping

      • +2

Not really. When bushfire comes around again it will have its use.

        • +1

Every winter we got so called hazard reduction burns that're making air really bad to breath. Different from the smog in HK though. Still I find it hard to breath and really need it in the babies room.

      • +1

Because cleaning a room with a child in it and having air particles leads to asthma, and not everyone can afford tiles for carpet.

        • Are tiles more expensive than carpets?

          • @FatTofu: Yeah very expensive, about $8 to 36 per tile, and the labour costs, could be $6000.

Tiled houses or units don't need air purifiers unless you're filthy.

            • @[Deactivated]: Like carpet better for winter

              • @neonlight: Not always having carpet makes no difference, it's much easier to work with tiles.

      • When the bushfires happened I got some air purifiers a xiaomi pro and another from JB (Can't remember the brand) but doesn't work nearly as well as the pro despite being a true HEPA as well as an air quality detector (Which is how I know how well it works).

Fire season is over now but whenever we cook it clears the room out from smoke pretty quickly. Also I sleep so much better with the air in the bedroom being so much cleaner even with the not as good air purifier.

        No regrets.

      • well, as said to the other many times be4,
it depends on what kind of neighbors u got, if one of them using wood heater or BBQ a lot,
then an air purifier will definitely make ur life better.

        don't know about Beijing,
but the air quality is much worse then HongKong when my neighbors using his wood heater during the night.

    • +2

However cooking smoke, larger particles like PM10 and dust, and bushfires are all valid reasons.

    • +6

This is going to be helpful during the bushfire season when you can't open your windows. Helped my family a lot when we had it worst this year.

      • Me too.

      • Fair enough and Sydney hazard reductions burn coming this week.

  • +1

I have 4 of the v2 if you have someone with asthma and allergies it makes a huge difference

Here's a tip to get the 3H 5% cheaper than Dick. Same saving can be applied to the 2H in my Kogan's deal post :

Buy it from the Xiaomi or Gearbite store on EBay. Then take up EBay's price beat offer within 48 hours showing them the prices from Dick or Kogan stores, both are both approved competitor stores on EBay's list:

"If you've made a purchase through eBay and then found your item cheaper elsewhere within 48 hours, eBay will gift you a voucher for the difference + 5% off the online retail website's price (up to $150)."

    Details here:
    https://pages.ebay.com.au/buy/Best_Price_Guarantee/#morecomp…

    • Wow. Has this Ebay price guarantee been going on for long? Or is this a new thing?

      • Good method but only if you looking to buy something on Ebay though.

    • good alternative. only downside is getting ebay vouchers instead of cash refund. and valid for 90 days.

    • Or just save $5 from Dick instantly by subscribing to their junk mail.

      • -1

Ruslan Logan's filthy tactics, buy from China, sell to Australia and give the illusion you're saving $5(or what ever) while he saves way more buying from China.

And kogan spent a fortune buying dick Smith's client sheet (that dick Smith sold years before the merge with Woolworths, until they sold it for poor profit too, then a group of businesses liquidated the assets selling everything off) after the sell off because your data is gold.

So every time you sleep looking at dick Smith, picture ruslan Logan bank account. Some businesses should just collapse and that's kogan.

        • +2

Wow, chill out dude, I’m just reminding people they can use instant $5 bonus instead of going through price match hassle of $9, btw cool story bro…

          • @[Deactivated]: It's not a story but what ever

    • :( more than 48 hrs but just delivered today

I have quite a few air filters at home and tested them all with the Dylos Air quality monitor ($500+ device). Last generation Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier did a horrible job of cleaning air, peer groups of other testers online revealed same result. Just like with "most" things in life, you get what you pay for. The IQ Air/Blueair units passed with flying colours, however they are all above $600+ price range. The previous generation Xiaomi air filters are basically $200 paper weight placebo units. I just bought the 3H, I hope they improved it.. It'd be great to have cheap air filter that costs a fraction of what the big boys charge.

    • Please share what you find out about the 3H's performance :-)

    • only problems w/ auto mode. With the 3H version, you can tweak it so that it filters at a higher level for longer. 2H had inaccurate readings.

      https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/data-explains-never-use-…

    • Where to get IQ Airs for 600+? The last time I checked they were more like $2000+.

    • Please let us know if its good :)

  • This is not needed in Australia.

    • +1

I have a wood stove in the lounge room.

  • Xiaomi is known to use RFID tags in their filters - it knows when you are due for a change and there is no way to reset it other than to buy a new filter.

    Is that true?

    • Yes for the RFID , nope for no way around it!
      Yes way around it!

Google it, people came up with different methods to getting around it.
