  • arigato!

  • Any idea why OOL-KIX is $199 but SYD-KIX is $319?? Regular fares from SYD-OOL is only $69-89.

    • Hmm, yes, why the large discrepancy?

    • supply and demand

    • +1

I would just get on a 6am SYD-OOL flight for $65 on Virgin then do the KIX run.

      • -3

You realise you'll have to do this both ways which ends up being more expensive right?

        • How does it end up more expensive? $199 + $65 = $264 vs $319. Times it by 2 for return and you are $110 better off….

    • I was gonna say the same thing.

    • Probably due to the fact that it is a connecting flight, and taking into account for any risk involved in assuring the customer that he or she will be getting on the next flight to KIX.

Point to point are always cheap, as there will never be a guarantee to be on-time.

      My 2C.

      • I think the Syd and Mel flights aren't point to point. I've been a few times and there has always been a stopover in either Coolangatta or Cairns.

  • FML I have used up all my time off on a europe trip next year. I could really handle a crazy week in Tokyo/Osaka this year

    • +3

      Yeah, totally FYL.
Must suck to have to pass up a cheap overseas holiday because you're taking too many overseas holidays.
      First world problem much? ;-)

  • not many people are going to Japan after the earthquake/radiation fear.

I heard that their tourism numbers has dropped by half

    • i knew someone was gonna bring this up again….LOL

    • +1

True, the Japan Tourism Agency is even offering 10,000 free flights: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-10/japan-offering-free-tr…
Details don't appear to be out yet though. Would that get OzBargained? :P

I've been expecting more price cuts actually…

      • +1

wow that will get so ozbargained…LOL

      • +1

Updates on the 10,000 free tickets thingo:
        http://www.lunarist.com/2011/10/free-holiday-ticket-to-japan…

        • +1

Thanks Kevin. Thought it was too good to be true. Why would the Japanese Government give you or I a free trip. What benefit would that be to their tourism?
So you need to have a loud mouth in the media or a huge online presence in the lucrative youth market to qualify. That is if it is ever approved.

There are some free, or discount tourist attraction deals if you ask for them at Tourist Information Centres in smaller places. They are a handy first stop in any town. These are the place to get the cheapest accommodation in many small places (from $20/pp/n in an Inn). Museums etc can be expensive (rarely free like here). Museum passes are great value if you are staying in a major centre like Tokyo. (Grutt Museum Pass for Tokyo is 2000Yen ($25) & lasts 2 months) Sometimes people get them just for a couple of attractions, so talk with fellow travellers & you may get a free book of entry tickets (only 4 used out of 71 attractions - a few are discounts only, most are free) like I did in Tokyo. Places like the Advertising Museum in Tokyo are free - and give a different insight. http://www.rekibun.or.jp/english/pdf/tokyotogo_eng.pdf

They seem honoured that we would visit! Japan has a gift-giving culture. I love hitch-hiking in rural Japan. Its a wonderful way to meet the locals. Japan is a formal culture, so if you are in their car, then you must be their friend - and treated as one. On average, it takes about 3 cars before I get a lift. Then they want to give me money, as they think I must be poor! I rarely accept, but give them a 25c souvenir koala with my name card. Japanese (especially children) love Koalas - but they often think a soft toy Kangaroo is a rat!

On one hitch, I was taken by a group of tour guides in training for 2 days to a historic mountain village. It was amazing travelling with 11 translators for 1 traveller - all with wonderful English skills (I am hopeles at languages)! They refused to let me pay for anything & gave me the best room in the hotel, and paid for a drunken night and local foods. When we left, I gave them all koalas (a good idea to travel with a bunch of these). They gave me an envelope with over $200!

But Japanese are usually frugal people (watch their eyes light up when telling you about a 0Yen Onsen (free spa) they know of in the mountains), but generous to Foreigners. They would love OzBargain!

So Japan is worth the visit!

        • -1

Didn't realise this was your own blog. Yeah, realistically speaking, it was more likely it would be "famous" people who would tell everyone about it, rather than any ol' unknown OzBargainer.

        • lol Thought I would throw in a few bargain tips for Japan! It can be an expensive place. Kevin & fufufu were asking for ideas. 25c Koalas are useful gifts in Japan.

      • +2

Yeah I thought flights would get cheaper than this. They've yet to come out with a deal that's as good as last year's 2 for 1 sale (return tickets ended up being $500 each) but there had to be two of you traveling then whereas you can go alone with this one.

C'mon Jetstar! If I have to deal with a bit of radiation, you can at least make it worth my time :P

    • +3

Unless you want to visit the immediate vicinity of the Fukushima daiichi reactor, your main radiation dose will be the extra cosmic rays from flying at high altitude.

  • :-( whyyyy Sydney flights are always so much more expensive

    • +1

you're lucky there's a flight from Sydney, I live in Perth and we're not getting any Japan deals :(

      • Hey you get all the awesome Bali deals though :)

        • and to Singapore and other south Asian cities. You can connect from there to Japan cheaply.

      • Watch this space. I'd be surprised if Jetstar Japan doesn't start up with direct flights to SIN/DPS/BKK with connecting flights to OZ.

      • AirAsia does some good deals Perth through KL to Japan, etc. It is still expensive to get to KL (was down to $72 last year from Gold Coast), but fairly cheap from there. Jetstar is still a lot cheaper.

        • WTF 72$ to KL !??!?!

  • -2

    Whats a return cost?

    • +1

Where do you live? Why not look it up…

    • +1

The cost of the flights are 'from $199'. The price depends on availability. Jetstar does not have return price specials - just 2 single flights booked at the same time. In my experience, it has always been cheaper on the flight back. All my '$199' flights cost about $400 return including baggage.

  • +2

hoping this will come out again for jan/feb :P

    • -7

      there's one out already!
      http://bit.ly/r8BnTA

    • Tell me about it… I have been waiting 6 months for a sale to come up for that period but it never does, has been the oct-dec period literally 4 times. Going to hang on til December and then I'm just going to book.. Need to fly at the end of jan/feb.

  • Wow. I'm excited. Are there any good deals on an accommodation +/- tours package? I'd love to visit japan and this looks like the perfect opportunity!!

    • these guys usually have good deals… I guess it really depends on when you're going ;)
      http://www.lonelyplanet.com/japan

      • Thanks mate. the deals look really good!

    • Use this, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55429 - 15% off hotels..
Several hotels on sale, 50% off?
      Looks good!

    • +3

Depends what quality you are looking for. Came back from Japan end of May. So few foreigners, I got a small Japanese style hotel room for under $20/night (a/c, TV, wifi) plus common room with PCs & small kitchen by lobby, bikes to rent, etc). Aizuya Inn (currenly $33/n single on Hostelworld.com) is a short walk to local station & about 3 stations from central Umeda. So handy but quiet area, a few great Temples a walk away, friendly English speaking staff (Manager from France, some from UK, etc). Of course you get what you pay for. Was in a traditional poor (but safe) area of Tokyo. Just check online. Plenty of accommodation at cheap prices on hostel websites. There are ways to stay for free - like couchsurfing.org, often with interesting families.

The transport price is always the killer within Japan.

Great money saving tip for a tourist to Osaka:
Osaka/Kyoto/Nagoya area has great 5700Yen ($72!) 5 consecutive day Kintetsu rail pass including pass for train from airport (that costs about $20 return otherwise) just use it when you are ready for 5 days travel and maybe onto Nagoya: http://www.kintetsu.co.jp/foreign/english/useful/ticket/rpw1…
This is a great pass to see around this wonderful area, basing yourself cheaply in Osaka. The train from/to airport can be used anytime, not just within the 5 day period. Everyone always thinks of JR Pass, which is only good for long distance travel, given the price 28,300 YEN ($359) for 7 days. I thoroughly enjoyed the pass in Cherry Blossom season this year (my favourite time), travelling up Yoshino mountain to the 1000+yr old walking trails.

This is the cheapest price I have seen from Gold Coast to Japan. I have flown Jetstar to Japan so many times (Cairns or Gold Coast) at a similar/slightly higher price. It will be cold - although skiers won't mind.

      • Just note, rates are per person, very rarely per room in Japan.

        • Hi mate,

I'm going to Japan in a few weeks and was wondering if I can get some tips from you? I looked at your profile and it says you're not accepting emails. Is there any way I can contact you other than here and ask you some questions?

          Thanks!

        • OK - Changed the CONTACT to accept emails for a few days.
Others would have different experiences. I travel for months, in a region to get to know it well (on a frugal budget) - sometimes hitch-hiking & staying in a tent or a Shinto Shrine. But sometimes I open the wallet wider.

  • +1

Spontaneous Japan trip, here I come!

    • I do that all the time - usually with only 2 weeks notice. Never regretted it!

  • is this the 5th sale this year already?

    • Um… something to do with radiation scare, destruction, & earthquakes. So few are flying to Japan, and Japanese are not in the mood to spend & party. So lots of cheap flights for us, as they need to fill those planes!

    • I count 8 Jetstar Japan Sale emails this year: (excluding StarClass & ski hols)
      Feb 2-4-1 Japan sale
May from $189 (from Cairns, $199 from Gold Coast)
      May from $209
      June Explore Japan from $209
      July Explore Japan from $209
      Aug from $229
      Sept from $199
      Oct from $199
A busy year for Japan flight specials, 3 more than last year.
Most seem to be for similar dates each year.

      • Wow that's crazy! And none of them for jan/feb lol, damn it! They must be really struggling to get people there ATM to have this many sales…

        • There are usually Jetstar specials for flights to Japan leaving sometime Feb to about 25 March. I go most years around 25 March - June (when it gets warmer, the blossoms come out, but leave before the monsoons).

      • What's the likelihood of another sale in November? Funnily, I don't seem ready to commit yet, even those the above sale dates are almost perfect. I wanted to spend Christmas in Japan.

        • Given that there have been sales almost every month - possible. But, that is heading into Christmas holidays, so may not happen - I don't think it has not happened in the past. It depends on how many people take up this offer. With the ads on TV, and the low price, I guess they will fill their planes.

On the first Jetstar flight to Nagoya, it was 1/4 full. Many of those people had won their flight, or were Jetstar staff like Alan Joyce (the CEO). I paid $400 return, and the not-happy couple behind me paid $1100 each!

        • Thanks, you appear to be very knowledgeable about travelling to Japan. I guess I'll take my chances and wait =O

  • +1

How much for both ways? Come on, we should have better info here - of all places.

    • A return Gold Coast-Osaka trip is $381 (eg 11Nov-12Dec) with only 10kg Carry-on.
Add $56 extra for the extra 15Kg baggage.
Add an extra $10 return if you take 20kg.

  • $20/night single bed. keen :) Now I just need to find the cheapest airfares back and we're set to go!

    • which hotel is this again? The cheapest I can find is $35 per night o.O

      • Taito-ku: Hotel Kawase Tokyo and Capsule

        http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/japan/tokyo-r2104538/hotel-ka…

        • There are often cheaper & better options than impersonal capsule hotels. But that is a $20/n option in a good area popular for hostels. Capsules are not so good to meet people.

I tend to book by user reviews, as it is usually not best to just go by price!! And remember a brilliant place to a drunken 18 year old may be hell for someone a bit older! Plenty on Hostelworld.com (which LP uses anyway, but without the reviews) & other hostel sites. I have used HW for years with no problems.

Some of the reviews for that place on HW: (It got a good 76% review overall)
The front desk lady was very nice and did her best, but with only limited English. Common room is a joke, but maybe I'm just spoilt :) Worst of all however was the smell at the dorm and the fact that the power cords in my (and not only mine) capsule were exposed. For 1500 JPY per night however it might be good if you do not plan on staying in too much and do not expect to meet many people.

The place is very cheap compare to other hostels. Less a minute walk to metro station (Asakusa & Ginza Line), 7eleven, Kaminarimon Gate, Asakusa tourist center and restaurant is everywhere. The hostel is quite clean. Only one shower room and a share bathroom with big bath tub. Lot's of toilets. Locker: small-6inch wide. Not outsiders allowed. So it's quite safe. Bed is nice-6ft long. Common area is spacious. Free pc with internet to use. Overall it's nice. Definitely will stay there again!!

        • Believe me, if you are spending more than a few nights in a place like Tokyo, it is great to come back to your own room & lock the door. Spend a little more for a room. The Inn I stayed in is $33/n (now with free breakfast) for small Japanese style room. Was $20/n in May.

    • -7

expect to pay a lot more to come back, as everyone wants to get out of there

      • You are so wrong! Regularly travelling to Japan on Jetstar, flights are cheaper coming home (taxes). Even back in May that was the case. But now, Japanese are not travelling (for cultural reasons), and the foreigners who wanted to leave left a long time ago. It was rare to see anyone like me there in late March onwards. Have you checked the prices - I thought not! So get your facts first.

      • +1

Return trip on special is $182 - $17 cheaper!

I want to go back there, but not in Winter, even though it is beautiful.
There are always the specials early in the year offering flights up to mid-March, just before Sakura (Cherry Blossom Season).

  • -1

Once you add a meal and checked luggage the price goes right up (>_<)

    • +3

Take your own food - I do every flight to Japan on Jetstar.
Maybe that is too expensive for you - just stay at home & enjoy what you are used to?? But, that would cost more than not eating! Living is too expensive for some people. We are talking about a no-frills discount flight. You could eat a banquet on the money saved over other airlines charges to Japan!

As for luggage, you do not have to take that much. Even in the cold, thermal underwear weigh very little, and a down jacket (bought at a sale of course) stuffs down to almost nothing, is so light & warm. You can fit a fair bit in carry on. I wear so much of my clothes through check-in, I pay no extra. (Travelling for up to 3 months at a time.) But sometimes I travel with a tent & camping gear in Summer & pitch it on beaches & rivers in Japan, so I have not avoided baggage costs, but save more than that by bringing what I can to keep costs down - including free accommodation! Hey, the fishermen and others always give me so much food & drink (Japanese say Sake does not give you hangovers - so you are expected to drink), that negates any small extra cost of getting to Japan.

There is a time & place to cut costs. The more I can save here (thank you OzBargain), the more I can spend while travelling (cheaply) overseas up to 9 months a year.

I don't think people should even think about travel if they worry about a few $$ for the food they might eat on two flights. You will spoil a great opportunity to experience life if you grumble so much.

    • How much food and baggage do you need on a flight, if as you say the 'price goes right up'???

Sheer brilliance - yes price goes up if you buy something on a discount airline. You could just have a sleep & not eat on a 8 hour flight. Otherwise there is food available onboard at OK prices, or bring your own.

      A return Gold Coast-Osaka trip is $381 (eg 11Nov-12Dec) with only 10kg Carry-on.
(if you can limit yourself to just wearing your heavier clothes & fill your pockets in Nov-Dec!)
Add $56 extra for the extra 15Kg baggage.
Add an extra $10 return if you take 20kg. (Don't forget you will probably will be bringing more back. It is the nature of travel to Japan.)

If you can't afford the extra cost of baggage, or food that you can bring on anyway, then overseas travel is not in your budget!

Seems it is not the charge for baggage & food, but buying a non-discount fare that would put the price 'right up'.

I see you say elsewhere, you have used this sale in 2009 to stay with your friend free, but came back full fare. So you should know how much cheaper this discount fare is than full fare. So the food you take on or buy on board, and baggage is no big deal if you can afford full fare!

      • The baggage charge rose in May, from a flat $20 for 20kg, to $33 for 20Kg. So an increase of $26 return. Since I take no more than 20Kg including carry-on, I would pay $16 more than before for a return trip.
But $199 is as low as I have seen on fares from Gold Coast. That saves about $100 off the cost of the trip for me. I used to travel from Brissie to Cairns to get the $199 deal. So this special is $84 cheaper than my previous Gold Coast flights on special to Japan with Jetstar after the increased baggage cost. That saving completely pays for all baggage & food costs.

        • @brucefromaustralia You searched me and were looking at my past comments? I have a scary stalker (>_<) にゃん

        • +1

Lol - clicked on your name & just noticed you had posted about a similar Jetstar deal to Japan in August. Hope you enjoyed Japan.

  • +1

Yeah It was great! I have been 3 times already and I'll be getting my tickets tonight!

    • Lucky bugger! I will wait for the Sakura. Melbourne people may be used to the cold, I am not. Was cold enough in March. Still snow in the mountains. Sometimes holiday there twice a year.

  • Word of warning, when your taking happy snaps to bring back to australia, PLEASE don't wave in the photos, it makes the locals very nervous!

  • man i am in the fence with this, dont know if i should take this offer im afraid a different/better offer would pop up straight after lol

    • These offers happen many times a year. Prices vary a little.
Its not as if the offer won't come again.
See my list of Jetstar email offers above. They're almost monthly.
But it will be cold in Nov-Dec! I go in Spring or Autumn for 2 or 3 months - on Jetstar $199 specials. I have been using them at least once a year since 2007 (except 2010 - was elsewhere).

Japan is great. The 5 day train ticket around Osaka I suggested above is great value for $72, including the train from/to the airport. Tourist numbers to Japan have been falling for a while, so flights are cheap. It is not a cheap destination like many Asian countries. But most things are not that expensive compared to Australia. But long distance transport is expensive. A shortish flight or Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Fukuoka in Kyushu is as expensive as the a flight from the Gold Coast to Tokyo. I guess that is why Jetstar is entering the domestic airline market there.

      • Thanks for the reply mate, really helpful!

  • Booked my flights just now!!

    • Happy travels!

      • Hey Bruce, can I contact you outside of Ozbargains?
You seem to know a lot about traveling in Japan, and if you don't mind (and if you're free), I'd like to pick your brain for a mere 5 to 10 minutes worth of questions… let me know ^^

  • Got my tickets from the last sale. Going for Christmas and New years, Can't wait!

  • +2

One way you say? might be the ideal christmas gift for mum.
