Let me make sure I understand. A bike shop is having a "sitewide sale" which excludes…. Bikes.

    • +9

Sounds silly but you buy a bike from a bike shop once, then spend the next few years buying upgrades or consumables like tubes, tyres, lights, saddles, groupsets, chains, pedals, bar tape, clothing, helmet, shoes, etc.

I've never bought a bike from Pushys but I've bought plenty of other bits and pieces from them.

      • Makes sense, just don't call it a sitewide sale then. :)

        • +3

Bang on ! That is why I did not mention "Sitewide" in the deal title here.
Pushys should do the same ! :-)

Makes sense, just don't call it a sitewide sale then. :)

I'm guessing bikes count for probably just 5-10% of the things they sell on their website, so calling it sitewide could still be acceptable. I think nowadays everyone's used to sitewide sales always having exclusions.

      • I actually bought a bike from them: a Cervelo C5, Dura-Ace and disc brakes for $3500. Unfortunately I missed out on the di2 version at $4100… They gave me the $600 refund and $200 store credit.

The delivery was quick and well-packaged and Pushys were quite apologetic about getting my hopes up on the di2 haha.

I would've posted the deal on Ozbargain but quantity was too low (and only size 54).

On a separate note, I was almost involved in a crash on my third ride on the new bike last month: https://youtu.be/k0Qqd493pe4

        • They gave me the $600 refund and $200 store credit.

Hmm, that's nice of them to give $200 credit. At least you still ended up with a nice bike!

What a gap! Both the pedestrians and car driver didn't check. Good thing you missed them both!

I got excited about this deal last time before realising it excluded Garmin, they have it quite often but honestly they exclude most of the stuff people would be interested in.

    • but honestly they exclude most of the stuff people would be interested in.

There's a lot more to bikes than cycling computers, GoPros, and bike trainers. :)

      • I suppose so, personally I don't even own a bike so there's that lmao.

  • Can anyone recommend me a good budget trainer from this site (or any other site)? Need to shed some COVID kgs
edit: Is this one any good? https://www.99bikes.com.au/trainer-jetblack-m5-magnetic-with…

    • Smart Trainer to go on Zwift? or just a dumb one?

      • +1

Just looked into Zwift and definitely keen!

        • It's awesome I just use a spin bike with power pedals. Good enough for me!

          • @fadeinthemix: Maybe someone else can chime in about a Smart Trainer for you

        • If you want to use Zwift, you've really got 3 options:
          1) buy a smart trainer
          2) use a non-smart trainer with a power meter
          3) use a non-smart trainer that's supported by zwift.

#3 is the cheapest - check the list https://support.zwift.com/en_us/supported-trainers-BkPlq7gr
#1 is the best - but if you decide you don't really like riding indoors/zwift or lack motivation, it can be a big waste of money.

          • @damion: Thanks for the reply. Do you have any recommendations for entry level smart trainer? Tacx flow? Any chance of finding one in stock?

            • +1

              @dajackal: entry level? not really.
I started with option 3 (Jetblack Fluid trainer), and then jumped to a medium/high level wheel-off smart trainer (Elite Direto) with a power meter built in.
I think the main decision you need to make is if you want wheel-off or wheel-on.
Once you make that decision, just buy whatever you can afford or can find in stock :)
This current pushys sale excludes TACX, Wahoo and Elite, so you can only get 12% discount on Saris, JetBlack and 4iiii - or buy elsewhere….?

              • @damion: Did the Jetblack Fluid trainer have the sensors built in or did you install a speed/cadence sensor separately?

How long did you have the setup before the urge to upgrade came along?

                • +1

@dajackal: My old Jetblack did have sensors, but they weren't Bluetooth or ANT+, so I needed the use the Bluetooth sensor on my bike.
I think I used the dumb-trainer just a handful of times during 2018/2019 summer, and then upgraded when 2019 winter came and I couldn't ride outside as much anymore.

  • Picked up a 12sp shimano XT groupset to replace the shitty Sram on my current bike!

  • Thanks OP, needed some accessories for my new bike.

  • Pre covid the pretend sitewide sale was 15% off.
I noticed some prices go up when the AUS dollar dropped in March but now that the dollar has rebounded the pre covid prices haven't returned.
IMO the new website is not an improvement. e.g. Wishlist doesn't work properly.

    • Theres still supply issues with a lot of bike related clothing and parts.

I find Pushys alright for some of those harder to find bike parts, but overall I find Bikebug to be a lot better (with a better delivery experience as well)

      • I find Bikebug's price are better than Pushy's, Pushy's delivery better than Bikebugs'

Comes down to how quickly I need something

        • It can really depend. Last month I needed cassettes and chains for two older bikes and I ordered the cassettes from one and the chains from the other. The price difference made the freight on the chains worthwhile.

  • Bikebug has better all round prices but shipping always comes from Sydney and I find takes minimum 5 business days, as they rarely have any stock in Brisbane. Pushys is usually here within 2 days. Order before 2pm and it's here next day.

  • What's cheap? Even with a sale, most stuff (lights, locks, pumps) seem much more $$$ than chainreaction & wiggle…

    • -1

That's because they're Australian-based and actually pay tax here.

      • Don't CRC and Wiggle pay tax there as well, along with GST here?

I don't think it has anything to do with paying tax, it's probably more likely that Australia is such a small market that suppliers price-gouge whereever they can, along with our higher wage costs.

        • Yup any business with over $80k of sales in Australia has to register with the ATO.

      • As per below, but irrespective, most of their products in the categories I've listed are 30-50% more expensive.
I'm all for supporting aussie businesses, but getting fleeced by one is BS. They're just slowly condemning themselves to the failed businesses scrap heap..

  • Have to add the increased shipping charges and free shipping threshold to the price comparison?
