Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) $362.59 + 2000 Qantas Points @ Qantas Store

370

Hi all,

Probably not the best deal but you can take advantages of the 15% off running on Qantas Store if you have points to burn (or if you are in the same situation as mine, they are expiring due to not flying). You will need to add the product to the cart before seeing the discount.

Some combinations of point and pay:
$362.59 + 2,000 pts (min)
$313.71 + 10,000 pts
$252.61 + 20,000 pts
$69.31 + 50,000 pts
$0 + 61,344 pts (max)

Your point is around 1pt = $0.0065. I usually save my points for flight but with the current situation this is not bad. Ended up getting a Pro Shield for < $100.

Hope this helps someone.

it's regularly $359 now without any points… but true that point value should be re-evaluated now that very few of us can actually fly.

    • few of us can actually fly.

I didn’t know any human could fly? 😱

      • +8

It's the landing that is the problem.

        • The hover conversion takes care of landing perfectly.

  • +1

Darn just bought one yesterday. Thank god for 28 degrees price protection, bring on the sales baby.

  • The non-Pro version is also on sale - 45084 points

  • +1

i thought points dont expire as long as you add to them in a yearly time frame?

    • +1

You are correct, it's actually 18 months since your last activity with Qantas. I haven't flown with them for a long time (switched to Virgin) and can't see myself flying anytime soon; hence just burning all my points on this.

      • +1

Why not link to BP rewards, and fill up? That will be recorded as activity

      • +1

TightTerry is correct. You don't need to 'Fly' to earn points.
You only need to earn some points to keep your balance valid.
I.e Woolworths rewards, Credit card point, Etc.

        • +5

or just walk with the wellbeing app?

  • Is that full points figure of 61k after the 15% discount? By your own maths, that $400 for the Shield Pro.

If that's correct, then click the product link on the top right and tell me how this is a deal.

    • I got it from the site source:

      https://imgur.com/a/Ymeyo2j

      Their calculator works on data-product-vpp="0.00575"

      Then I work backwards 0.00575 / 0.85 (15% off) = 0.006764706 ~= 0.0068

  • I dunno how you came up with .0065, by my gift card vs points calculation it’s now more .0058

    • Calculation above. I might be wrong but that's how I got to that

    • How I do it is take the largest e-gift card from djs, and divide it by the points cost to get the dollar value. This is with the assumption that I can just get the items at djs with the gift card.

I hardly fly and think the taxes you have to pay on top offset any benefits the points give you. Every one values points differently though…

  • I made my first ever purchase on the qantas store last week, aggggh. Is there any price protection?

What's the advantage of Nvidia Shiled vs Apple TV? I can think of:
    * Airplay vs Chromecast (Chromecast is on any system, Airplay is Apple-only).
    * No USB vs 2 USBs.
    * Sound via optical or HDMI vs HDMI only.
    * Apple games (whatever it's called) vs all Android games possible (?).
    * Apple Music vs any music app on Android (?).

I'd also assume Shield is more flexible software-wise, as Apple won't let you install whatever you want, the way you want.

I assume both systems have super quick/responsive and snappy interfaces and the hardware looks don't matter.

Please add and correct me if I'm wrong!

The main difference for me (i only own the Apply TV4K and not a shield) is the sheilds ability to pass through Lossless HD audio eg Dolby TrueHD for Atmos files. Plex with Infuse direct plays everything for me on apple tv 4k etc except it converts the TrueHD audio to another lossless format but it loses with Atmos artifacts. The only way to get Atmos pass through on the Apple TV is wrapped in a Dolby Digital+ container which is already compressed down from TrueHD and is very uncommon in the linux iso ripping community.

Both are great devices but Android TV opens a lot of doors (such as the diverse world of IPTV).

        • Yeah ive got Android TV on my TV inbuilt and its handy for a few things. I much prefer the usability and look of the apple TV 4K for all the main apps i use (helps that i mainly use the apple eco system). However the Shield is a big step up from any inbuilt version of Android TV - for the few advantages it has over the Apple tv i cant justify spending that much on it. If you're already in the Android ecosystem based on feedback and what ive seen the shield do id highly recommend it for people look for a box that does everything

@TightTerry: Some of the biggest reasons to go down the AndroidTV path are not on the advertised features list. ;-)

            • @Xizor: Each to their own, i have both and i prefer ios or TVOS over Android. But lets not go down an Apple vs Android debate path!

              • @TightTerry: Horses for courses, no doubt. 100% people should select what fulfills their individual need and makes them happy! You're not quite following my insinuations above but that's probably for the best and i'll hush up.

                • @Xizor: Haha no i got exactly what you were insinuating - but yes a drawback is Apples tightly locked down operating environment - However not always a bad thing! Again, buy based on what you need :)

                  • @TightTerry: Don't think you get what he means still - although if you wink back we will know for sure ;-)

i think u can stream games from your pc assuming you have an nvidia card.

      • +1

you can stream games from your PC using any video card to almost any android tv box or smart TV running android tv just by simply using the Steam remote-play app.

Nivida Shield has the best 4K up scaling of any device, including TV's FULL STOP.

Yes even better than the Sony X1 Extreme!! and I love my Sony upscaling.

      Just read the reviews.

      https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/feb/26/nvidia-sh…

      https://www.talkandroid.com/guides/android-tv-guides/nvidia-…

      https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAndroidTV/comments/dqa16g/ai_…

Game at 1080p and let the Shield upscale. Let the shield upscale Netflix, Plex.

Even with Netflix, Prime and Disney there is still so much content that is not 4K.
Don't get me wrong, most people can live with the TV Up-scaling, if you have a decent Sony, or 2020 Samsung (yes they are finally getting close to the Sony).

Anyone that claims an Apple TV is good at 4k upscaling, has degraded eyesight or is trolling, because while not BAD, it's NOT good and certainly not even close to the Sony's let alone the Shield.

  • I'm still scared from the Sony earbud fiasco.

    • Still scared of Sony A7 III camera fiasco…

      • +1

I should have said "burned" not scared….. But yes, the A7 was a real slap in the face.

  • Good find. I promised the Mrs we would save our points for a hotel, but very tempting!

Must be new in stock as well, I have searched the Qantas store for a Shield before without any luck.

    • As a Melbournian, You won't be staying in a hotel for a while, so you may as well pull the trigger.

      • +1

Also, you can use the shield to shield yourself from the Mrs's anger. It's that good.

    • +1

I'd keep saving for the hotel - down here at this rate buying a hotel won't cost many points!

  • Can anyone let me know of the pros of Emulator and Android gaming on the Shield Pro? What kind of Emulation is possible and easily accessible? Eg N64? Ps2? Xbox?

I already own a Sony Z9F Android TV which has some ability for android gaming, i just dont know the limitations on what it could handle vs the Shield. If anyone has any knowledge in the space it would be much appreciated.

    • I have a 2018 Sony so I just missed the atmos support, it’s the only reason I’d get one for me.

      • The 2019> Sonys have Atmos passthrough? Interesting, didnt know that. Full True HD passthrough?

        • Actually mine is 2017, my understanding is 2018 > is capable of atmos pass through, at least netflix is. Not sure about kodi though but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t… just do some research

  • Thanks OP. Good time to burn some QFF points.

    • Indeed…… I'm thinking the same. I'm pretty sure they (the points) will survive covid, but there are no guarantees anymore.

  • Thanks OP, purchased :)

Been looking out for these for a while, good burn of points.

  • Bought, thanks OP. I don't really need it though.

  • Missed the Shopping Express deal on the Shield TV and like others, decided to burn some QFF points on the PRO.

I have an older model ATV and it is giving me the s#$%ts with the Apple handcuffs. I do like the Apple interface but doing it the Apple way is getting up my nose.

  • Has this deal expired?

i am seeing that this is now $357 + 10,000 points

    • +1

When you check the cart, you can see the new price.

  • Got one like others to burn through some points. Still have lots left and hope Qantas will come good in a year or so.
Anyone know how long it takes items from the Qantas store to be deilvered?

    • +1

Got email today my order is dispatched and ETA is 12/08.

      • Got my email yesterday, it was just that a mate had said it took Qantas weeks to deliver his purchase.

  • Ordered on 3rd. Still haven't heard from Qantas regarding dispatched. This normal?

    • The rewards are usually outsourced to a regional Harvey normal etc, they prob waiting on stock. Just call and see what’s going on I reckon

  • Now seeing $353.45 +2K points

  • Delayed until 26th August now…2nd delay email from them.

    • Yeah same! Hopeless

  • Anyone got 2000 Qantas points i can borrow?

  • I don't work for Qantas but I know stock has arrived and shipping Monday.. More available
