Apple TV+ Free for 1 Year

442

I received an email from apple for 1 year free apple tv+ despite not buying any apple product for last 5 years. Hopefully others got the email as well.

Mod: See original deal from 2019. This deal is likely to be the same thing (although the OP didn't purchase anything, as stated), however it's not a duplicate as the original was posted over 6 months ago. See Guidelines - Duplicate Exceptions

Hopefully others got the email as well.

    No I didn't.

    No Deal…

    • +1

      Didn’t receive one either.

      • +50

I've checked ALL 57 email accounts too !!!

        • +2

Is that all you have jv? expected more from you…

  • +8

This free trial, unlike any other apple trial, ends immediately when cancel the plan. Apple seems desperate these days.

    • you got a year to cancel the plan, what's the hurry?

      • +3

        what's the hurry?

so you don't forget to cancel later.

Other subscription keep going until the end date, unlike Apple.

        • +11

you could just set a reminder to cancel

          • +9

@MiscOzB: i usually forget to set the reminder.

            • @jv: Being forgetful is one of the hallmarks of a busy life.

          • @MiscOzB: Sometimes I made dumb reminders that the years later me didn't know what I was supposed to do..

    • +4

Just set a reminder in your calendar.

      • Need to set a reminder to set the reminder.

    • I learned that the hard way, but then again its Apple TV plus

    • Apple news trial ends day you cancel also

      • nop I got 3 months from the other deal in ozb and it didn't.

  • +1

    Link says:

Get Apple TV+ free for one year.
Now when you buy a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac, it includes one year of Apple TV+ for free.1

    • +1

Last purchase I made was iPhone 6 in 2015.

      • A family member didn’t buy a Apple device? No Apple TV’s?

        • nope!

        • I've no one linked as family member to my account.

        • First I thought it was a scam. Then I logged in straight into apple tv website to see if it was legit.

        • If a member in family plan grabs a new Apple product, does that mean everyone in family can grab a year of Apple TV for free?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I’m not sure because I’ve already had one going when someone else buys. But I did find I bought a new phone then my sister somehow claimed the 12 months, and I believe it’s shared with the family plan.

      • Copy/paste your 1 year free link?

    • +2

I don't use iPhone anymore, moved to Android.

      • I still have my ipad, but the ms surface go is far better and easier to use. Especially when i only paid $399 for it last November.

  • +18

A generous offer, although Im yet to watch a single minute of video from my free 12 month sub (ipad purchase last year).

Very little content and the inability to chromecast video being the two main reasons.

    • +7

For All Mans Kind is pretty good.

      • +1

OK, but still no way of getting it onto a big screen without an Apple TV box?

        • +3

I was able to get my old Vodafone TV to run an application that allowed me to airplay to it which was pretty good.

EDIT: One of these for >$15 would also work.

          • +6

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Lol, so many hoops to jump through. They wonder why people pirate.

            • @PainToad: Genuinely curious… what hoops!? I can log in just like Netflix on my tv or my computer or Apple TV… pretty ez for me personally.

        • watch in chrome and cast to chromecast works for me

        • +1

My Sony android TV does both chromecast and airplay 2, so I can airplay it from my phone, iPad or MacBook Pro.

I think new Samsung TVs have the Apple TV app directly on the tv.

          EDIT: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00082624/

        • +3

There's an Apple TV app for Amazon's Fire TV Stick, and some recent smart TVs have one as well.

      • -1

Find me a way to watch it in 4k with my TV, without an Apple TV

        • +2

The Apple TV app is available on all LG, Samsung and Sony models dating from 2020 to all the way back to 2017 so if you have a fairly recent TV from one of those big three brands, chances are you should be able to download the Apple TV app from your smart TV and yes, it plays back in 4K for supported content. So you don't need an Apple TV box any more.

    • +1

Mythic Quest is entertaining enough, and has one of the best standalone episodes of TV I've seen.

The Banker is worth a watch too.

    • +3

the new Tom Hanks movie Greyhound was a pretty good watch

      • It was brilliant!!!

    • The content sucks really. There's handful of free streamables.

    • I’m the same - every thing that looks interesting costs anyway

  • Between a family sharing of 6 it's hard not to get someone buying a new apple device each year.

  • +3

that reminds me to cancel it thanks

    • That made me lol.
… until I realised I need to do the same!

  • +7

To be honest I’m all in with apple but Apple TV just sucks. It’s just bunch of shows put together in a hurry to try compete with other services. Get as many user as they can which are there only because of the free trial and see apple stock go boom. Maybe in the future it will be better. But now it just sucks.

    • Free is good but not a fan of TV+. The UI on Apple TV app sucks and it mainly pulls in what you already have in Netflix, Stan etc. with most other things pay to rent/buy. Watched only one show that is their own. Meh. I wouldn't waste my time again. Cancelling before the free period is up.

      • i didnt think the app links through Netflix and stan? thought it generally links the Australian channel streams 10 go, 9 now etc

      • You can click on an icon that only shows Apple TV+ content, but I agree the offering is weak.

        • +1

The shows they have are all the Apple made ones (no third party shows or movies) but the ones they have are pretty good.

    • It isn’t a bunch of shows put together to compete, as it is pretty much original and expensively produced content. Problem is there isn’t much of it, and a lot of it is deliberately the kind of stuff you would find produced by public television. Very Northern California.

I reckon it is an indulgence of Eddie Cue.

Anyway, free is an OK price, it isn’t worth paying for as there just isn’t enough content.

  • Had the free trial for 6 months so far, don't think I have used it at all

    • -1

Apart from that Tom Hanks movie, there's nothing on it to watch.

      • +1

        "See" is very very good

        • I will check it out, thanks!

  • Works on the IPAD that I bought during that Ebay deal.

  • Will this work with my 2005 iPod Nano - that was the last time I dared go into the Apple walled garden.

    • +1

video would be a bit pixilated

      • That's okay, with my NBN I am used to video pixelation

  • I got a year free when I brought my iPad. I really enjoyed Defending Jacob. I’m currently watching See and it’s pretty good but there’s not much else that I find interesting.

    • +3

I got a year free when I brought my iPad.

      Where did you bring it?

  • -2

The UI of Apple TV sucks, but the content (while lacking) is actually pretty good. Morning Show, mythic quest, Home before dark, are all great shows

  • so only one so far got this offer?

  • +9

Gotta call this out, the screenshot clearly states:

“Your new Apple device includes Apple TV+ free for 1 year”

    Making this a duplicate of:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493394

  • I got a free year offer when I did a replacement repair and started up the phone for the first time. Old phone.

    • That makes sense, it’s the first time the device got activated, so Apple considers it new

  • I got this when I bought a new phone last year (didn’t end up signing up), they got the offer again when apple replaced phone.
Has content, but some you need to pay for. Have had it for a month now, but haven’t watched anything.

    • What you are signing up for is the Apple + subscription service programs. They are all free, original content not available anywhere else, all produced by Apple.. You are confusing the Seperate iTunes content with Apple TV+ content.
Not really your fault, the GUI needs to be clearer in this. I guess Apple has tried to make it a one stop shop for all subscription services, rental and purchase options, you pick the movie and then the source.

An idea that doesn’t work as well as it sounds.

      • whilst I've had it for over a year (different purchases) havent yet used it - the few times we have looked, most things we were interested in seemed to be at a cost?

  • +1

Maybe OP's apple account was hacked?

  • does this only work on apple hardware?
not even worth hoping for a free trial if i gotta watch on my tiny old iphone se. or my tiny 12" macbook

then again my tv is also pretty small

  • Is there much of content apple tv plus , got it with iphone 11 pro purchase, but couldn't find much in it. Can someone recommend any good shows?

  • +1

Buy Apple device, get code for 1 year free Apple TV+, return Apple device. 1 year free sub still works.

  • Watched the beastie boys doco and morning wars, thats about it. Wont be renewing in a couple of months

  • I think you got it because you didn't buy anything for 5 years… they are luring you into buying by giving you this freebee…

That happens on eBay too, if not used for longer time then they give 5-10$ for free to kick start buying spree

  • The content on Apple TV+ isn't even worth a years free subscription.

    • I disagree, there are some quite good shows in there. There just isn’t much content.
So free got me to sign up, but I will kill the subscription when the year runs out. There isn’t enough to pay for.

  • +1

Honestly this apple tv+ shit is so bad, my mate got me to help him activate his new phone with it and then we realised how really dog shit it is, I don't know who would even pay for it. Still a deal but :/

  • +1

Have a free "sub" also. Haven't watched anything in 6 months. You get what you pay for with a free sub.. nothing.

    • +1

I watched one episode of See, it's better for people who suffers insomnia.

  • +3

It’s quite possibly the worse subscription service. You still more or less have to pay for everything, very minimal shows/movies included.

  • This promo has been going on for ages

  • i think, someone actually bought an Apple product, and during registration accidentally put in the wrong email address (in this case the wrong email address had been your email address).

  • Strangely enough, I was offered this after getting a replacement iPhone X model, activated, but never used it though, anything good?

  • Worked for me even saying "your new ipad comes with this offer" even though it's an ipad Air 2 I bought back in 2017

  • Apple put a couple of TV shows there and is surprised everyone didn't lap it up.

got my apple tv + with a homepod purchase - what a waste of time,
    no content,
    worst streaming service ever

  • Also got the 12mo sub when my iPhone got completely replaced for free (had FaceID issues), welcome surprise

  • bro my new tv is by apple, only the best for my place.

  • I have had it for free, haven't used it though.

Have heard the latest season of Drag Kids and "I, Pedophile" are good though.

  • I gotta say, in my option, Apple TV+ is absolutely fantastic!

I understand people’s initial disappointment by the quantity of content, but that’s exactly NOT what Apple is going for. All of the shows on it are curated originals - hence the small quantity right now, but the quality is outstanding.

I believe if you find a show you don’t like on Apple TV+, it’s not because it’s bad, but rather just not your thing.

So far, I haven’t watched anything less than excellent on it.

    Defending Jacob - Excellent!
Home Before Dark - Great mystery to watch with my tweens.
    Morning Wars - OMFG amazing!
Little America - Wonderful and true short stories.
    Mythic Quest - Hilarious!
    Dear… - Heart warming.
Greyhound - Tom Hanks movie that, funnily enough, I didn’t enjoy as much as everything else on this list but was still great.
See - Haven’t watched yet, but my teenage son is enjoying it.

100% continuing my subscription as I’m super hanging out for season 2 of everything.
