  • Can this be used in a diesel car? Or does it have to be diesel approved because of the dog?

    • +4

My dog says go for it.

    • +6

the only dog in my car is the subwoofer

    • +2

Diesel car must not have a particulate filter. I use it in my Hyundai i30 diesel without DPF.

If your car has a DPF you need an oil that meets ACEA C3 I think.

      • -1

It's really not as simple as that. The only way to be sure is look up your car on oil manufacturers sites (multiple ones too, as they can be wrong).

        https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/home/oil-selector.ht…

        • -1

Don't rely entirely on oil selector website from oil manufacturers - Penrite recommended HPR 5 diesel 5w40 (semi syntethic) for my non DFP i30. My mechanic is using HPR 5 5w40 synthetic. It meets ACEA A3/B4 which is what Hyundai seems to care about most in the manual. The car's very low km at the moment and since I do 5000km in 8-9months between changes I'm more comfortable with a fully synthetic option to be sitting around the garage.

I've previously used this Castrol 5w-30 in another car so I'll stock up. The annoying thing is I need 5.3L so I'll prob get 2x5L + 1L extra. That 1L extra is not great value :(

      • +1

Each diesel car model will have their specific ACEA requirements. Mazda's SkyActiv-D diesel engine requires ACAE C1. Other models using AdBlue would require a different type of oil.

      • Whichever oil you go for, in my opinion it would be prudent to only use ultra low saps oil. There are only a few readily available, Nulon and Gulf Western AFAIK.

      • Diesel car must not have a particulate filter.

        But what about the dog?
Sounds uncaring and self centered to me.

    • By "dog" do you mean DPF? Usually DPF equipped diesels require low/mid SAPS oil like ACEA C3, if you use something like this potentially you could stuff your DPF (literally). Something like this would be a better choice - https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/castrol-castrol-magnatec… on sale sometimes you can pick this up for $50-$60, but ultimately check what your manufacturer recommends.

    • +1

Use the Long Life version for dpf (dog) equiped vehicles.
      https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/castrol-castrol-edge-eng…
It's on special every now and then around the $50-60 mark

    • Yes dpf

    • https://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/ this will tell you what Castrol Oil can be used in each vehicle.

      • -1

It's not showing the oil bring used though

    • +1

If you are unsure about anything, look at your vehicles owner manual it will tell you what specification of engine oil you require. Armed with this information you can look up any manufacturers website to see if they conform to that particular standard. VW, BMW, Mercedes each have their own unique oil specs.

  • And as a handy hint this is a great general protective and lubricant oil.
A lot of people use it for machinery and guns etc.

    • +9

don't use it for buttsex though

      • +4

Phew, you just saved my ass.

      • You want Gun Oil for that.

      • +1

        works fine for me

      • from the product blurb - "Formulated with Fluid Titanium Technology, this unique formulation's adaptive strength reduces metal to metal contact across a range of different driving speeds"

I don't know about you guys but the people I know surely don't have metal to metal contact during the process. ….as far as I know!

        • +1

unless you've got buns of steel

      • don't use it for buttsex?

Why not? I'm a bit cynical mike.

  • +1

nice, cheaper than the last deal

  • +1

    Nice oil

  • Great oil, my Mazda MX5 ND loves it. Avoid Penrite it is just "Aussie" bit overrated.

    • +4

Different oils shouldn’t noticeably change the way your car runs

      • +2

        he's the Miata whisperer

      • True, it runs bit more fuel efficiently compared to other oils. Not just after one change. Much better than whatever the dealer put in it. There was a weird vibration at 1200RPM in my NC with other oils.

The ND too new to notice haha.

    • +3

How do you know it loves it as a matter of interest?

      • +1

Might be drinking it quicker than other oil? Haha

      • It sung while he poured it in

        • Jinba Ittai lol

    • In my 14 years of ownership of my car, Penrite was the only oil that resulted in metal particles in my magnetic drain plug. Even Magnatec mineral oil didn't cause this. I am now back to this Castrol Edge 5w-30. Not using Penrite for this car anymore.

My Mazda diesel does use Penrite as they sell the Enviro C1 5w-30, which is not common with other brands. Penrite is easiest C1 to find..

      • If you have/had metal in your oil I'd stop driving lol. You're about to spin a bearing by the sounds of it.

  • Can I use it for a 2012 V6 commodore Omega?

  • will this be good for renault megane 225 sport?

  • +7

    Check your owners manuals people

    • +3

Pfff no way!! Asking randoms on a forum is way more reliable!!

  • My 2013 Mazda 3 needs an oil change. Looking to do it myself (about time). based upon previous receipts it seems that it's previously used 5w-40. Manual also shows 5w-30 within the range of oils in average temperature (based in WA).

I was contemplating between OP's current deal vs HPR5 5w-40 when ever that goes on sale?

    https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-advice/mazda-3-oil-recommen…

    • The oil weight is only one defining part of the oil description. Like t & c's there is plenty of fine print on the oil container.

    • I used both HPR5 and this Castrol Edge in both my cars with extended OCI >15000km (2012 Nissan Dualis and 2006 Mazda 3 bk) and both runs fine.
However, I get a slight better in fuel economy with Castrol Edge 5w-30.

      • Thanks mate ! Good to hear. Think will try this one out

  • if used in engines that has done 250k or 180k, will it be too thin, and need to keep topping up?

    • Nah, I use this in a 2010 Prius with >300k, no oil burning worries

    • You'll probably need a mechanic to assess the overall condition of your engine. My experience indicates Castrol 5w30 is unlikely to cause further damage, being a quality-ish oil itself.

    • I added it in my Landcruiser, which has 300K kms and it had to be topped regularly. Would suggest a thicker oil instead.

      • +1

It might be the wrong oil to use with a diesel V8 Landcruiser.

        • For Diesel V8, 100% wrong oil. Luckily mines Petrol V6

  • +1

How does it compare with this fully synthetic Castrol 5W - 30 oil on sale at Repco for $29?

    https://www.repco.com.au/en/oils-fluids/engine-oils-fluids/e…

    • The bottle colour makes a huge difference in the product's value proposition. Doesn't make sense I know but it definitely makes a difference.

    • would also like to know as Repco is closer.

      • If you change the oil regularly then the long-drain spec has very little advantage.

    • One level up - edge can handle extended drain interval up to 2 years.

    • +1

      From Castrol:

"Castrol EDGE does not have the same technology as GTX MAGNATEC, the two have different additive systems. Castrol GTX MAGNATEC has intelligent molecules that cling to critical engine parts like a magnet, providing an extra layer of protection from the start and throughout warm-up that won’t drain to the sump. Castrol EDGE has a more advanced technology with fluid titanium that provides superior engine wear protection. It provides a higher level of high temperature protection, anti-wear performance, and viscosity stability. Castrol EDGE is our premium product line. Castrol always recommends following the guidelines of the engine manufacturer for the recommended oil (i.e. SAE grade, API service category and manufacturer specifications) specific to your application. This information can always be found in the owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly."

      • +3

        "intelligent molecules"

…like it was written by a Instagram marketing professional.

        hehe.

        • It's a job well done. How else would you make viscous fluid more exciting/engaging for the potential customers?

      • Thanks. I think my engine prefers "fluid titanium" over "intelligent molecules".

        • Mine prefers "fluid intelligent titanium molecules" .

    • When was it $29? Can't find any reference to that price. Unhappy I missed out :(

      • It was there Tuesday, gone Wednesday. Same cycle as the supermarkets, it seems.

  • i have ford territory 2012 petrol engine but not sure why datateck and sca does not think the car fit with this oil rather than magnatec 5w-30. Any expert know about this?

    • This should be fine, have used on a 2012 Ford Falcon, and it runs great!

  • +2

Instead of asking the online community if this oil is good for your car, you'll get a much better answer if you checked your car manual.

    • +2

I don't think most people know what that is or if they have one.

      • Lol…

  • Now I just need to get skinny enough to fit under my car to get to the sump plug and filter

  • Gone the days these used to come in at $29?

    • I reckon $29 to $35 is a standard price for this oil, since it's always on sale every 2 to 3 months.

  • Wait until $29?

  • I bought a few bottles of Shell Helix Ultra, they were half price not long ago. From what I could read SHU 5w-40 is superior. The US guys at bobistheoilguy say that it's about on par with their Pennzoil oils.

  • Most synthetic oils are similar. If you car is old (10 years) then just put anything. that's what I do. I just go for cheapest Synthetic and change oil every 8k myself. 20/50? NO probs.
