Telstra Pre-Paid Encore Cap (Free Local Calls from 6pm-6am Every Night till end 23 Jan 2012)

132

Just came across this and thought it was great value. This new Telstra prepaid plan includes free calls & text from 6pm - 6am every night to any Australian number (mobile or landline).

I realize there are cheaper options if you are willing to use resellers like TPG or LiveConnected but this seemed like an awesome deal if you are sick of Optus/Voda mobile net speeds like I was.

Here is a summary of the cap offers if you are lazy to click the link:

Recharge: $30
$250 Calls/text
500MB Data

Recharge: $40
$550 Calls/text
1GB Data

Recharge: $50
$1000 Calls/text
2GB Data

Recharge: $70
$1500 Calls/text
3GB Data

Recharge: $100
$2000 Calls/text
4GB Data

*Plans include international calls/sms. 30 day expiry for credit.

Mod: From their t&cs:

. Free Talk & Text and Bonus Data end 23 January 2012 unless extended by Telstra.

mod - added expiry for free talk, to the end of the title

EDIT: Kozi pointed out that Data is charged in MB increments. This plan might not be great for data heavy users.

UPDATE: Telstra just approved Whirlpooler Shaliron's feedback that Telstra should charge data in KB increments NOT MB increments. Up-vote the feedback via this link so Telstra notices.

UPDATE 2: See this comment on Telstra's update on kilobyte-billing.

Haha yeah I just noticed it after I put it up. 6am-6pm would have been nice though ;)

      • hahas yea XD

    • Actually that suits me better as during the day, work pays.
Pity it's not all day weekends, but I suppose you need to spend your credit somehow.

      The rates are horrendous!

      SMS - 29c

It's also the first Telstra plan to include International calls and text. A massive + in my book :)

    • Not the first, I have been using the old prepaid $40 cap for the past 3 months which also included international calls/sms. I was surprised too

    • Yeah, Cap+ included it, although I don't see that option listed on Telstra's site any more… Hopefully I can stay on it! The new plan charges data in MB increments, too. :(

  • Can I use mobile-tethering on this?

    • +1

No problem. This offer is simply the paid version of the 30 day free-trial of Cap+ offered for porting to them for the cost of a $2 SIM which came out about a month ago. I had a lot of fun for $2. :)

  • So, T&C on the free calls and text at all? When they say "free" do they mean entirely free or is it coming under the cap in some form?

    • It really is free. I went motor mouth while I had the 30 day trial. At that time it was only free from 1800-2359 and only calls.

      • Interesting..and good til January..shall have to check this out.

This represents a step backwards from the Cap+ plan, a significant drop in usable data…

in the fine print it says:

Encore Cap - "Data is charged in MB increments"

    Cap+ - "charged per KB"

I moved to telstra prepaid because optus switched to the stupid 1mb increments, at kb increments I barely use a quarter of my 500mb on telstra prepaid each month, but on optus 1mb chunks all 500mb would be gone in just a few days.

I certainly hope telstra don't force people from their current plan!

    • +1

This is catch those who do not read the fine prints. Also you can accumulate a max of $300 credit. Your recharges will fail if your credit goes over this threshold.

    • +1

That completely sucks! If they start charging by the MB ill be forced to sign up to a BYO or other postpaid plan :(

One huge reason I'm sticking to the Cap+ for now..

    • "As others have explained, a session isn't a single request. Looking at my online account usage, I usually have about 2-3 sessions a day, rather than one for each request my phone makes." (http://whrl.pl/RcYFEj)

Anyone else find the same thing?

      • It depends on your phone. I found the Nokia can make lots of connections, while Android does not.
Android even keeps the 3G data connection open when it is using wifi. (mine at least)

        • It depends how often your phone disconnects from the 3G data service. If you are in and out of WiFi range, it will usually switch between the two, although you can set it so that the WiFi only turns on when you want it. Some power saving software will periodically turn off the "radio" interfaces, i.e. Wifi and 3G data, which again will start a new session when it re-connects. So it depends.

You have to weigh whether the benefits of using your work or home WiFi network outweigh the cost of using your 3G data plan constantly. It may be that you only leave the house (generally) once in the morning and don't reconnect to WiFi until you return home, in which case you will probably only have one or two sessions per day.

If you want to do that but are worried about using it up, you can also set several services to sync only when on WiFi, i.e. when you get home.

Also if you're worried, I think you could probably pay $10 a month and get an extra GB.

  • Anyone see a complete list of T&C for the offer or do I need to call Telstra?

Is this a bargain though ???

Just looks like the normal plan prices to me… is there are discount that I'm missing ???? If not, this should be moved to the forums…

    • The cap+ used to be free calls and SMS from 6pm-12am So we now get an additional 6 hours of free calls and SMS per day.

Edit: but at the expense of getting charged by MB increments, which is much lesser value for data users.

  • here is the rates terms http://www.telstra.com.au/my-offer-summaries/download/docume… i ordered the $2 online sim (still available til nov 15th) and ported over to Telstra got the free $30 credit and choose the cap + plan activated yesterday. but their cap+ terms said that bonus data and free call were until oct 31st . So i wonder which plan i would be on now ? are all customers on the old cap+ prepaid offer changed over to the new encore plan terms from nov 1st?

    • Will expire 1 month after you activated the cap+ offer.
Just checked my cap+ balance - "CAP+ Night Time Exp: 13/11/2011".

  • What does "free local calls" mean in the context of a mobile service?

    • The local was added by the OP, but it means calls within Australia are free 1800-0600.

      • Yep, that's right. Free calls to any Australian number (mobile or landline).

Is using "local" confusing? I didn't want the title to be too long and I felt that I had described it more accurately in the description. I can change it if you think its confusing.

NOT a bargain. It is the same as the Cap+ offer except that it has a couple of "Gotchas"

    1. $300 Maximum credit balance or you can't recharge - If you don't use all bonus credit or buy Plus Packs, you won't be able to recharge until ALL of your credit expires. Do not even think about changing from another offer if you have more than $270 account balance or you won't be able to recharge at all.

    2. Data is counted in MB sessions rather than KB. If you have a Smart Phone that automatically polls for emails every 15 minutes or so, 1GB Data will not get you through the entire 30 days, even if you don't use Internet Browsing at all.

These limitations did not exist in Cap+. Telstra are trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Realistically the addition of free calls between Midnight-6AM is useless for most people.

    • Well, I guess it's a good deal if you are a new customer.

  • "Great News! Telstra Pre-Paid Cap Encore, data will now be charged per kB, rather than per MB. This means if you only want to use a little you won’t be charged for a lot."
