A similar 12ft model at BCF is $130.
Similar models in the Prevail 2 range is double the price.

Great price for a 10ft rod you can use on the beach, jetty, rocks etc. I don't think you can find a better rod at this price point.

I believe it's cheap because the Battalion has been discontinued. The closest model would be the Prevail II but the Battalion was considered to be more premium than the original Prevail.

  • In case anyone reading this is into slide baiting I have a question:

When slide baiting off the beach or rocks where are you trying to get the bait? Casting it 100m away from you into a huge barren stretch of sand seems to be pointless yet none of the slide baiting videos seem to mention it.

For beach sliding is there any point casting past the breakers?

    • +1

I havent tried slide baiting, but I imagine the point is to try and reach a gutter that's out quite far. It might appear to be barren sand, but if its a deep gutter of water, then big fish will swim through it. I usually just search for a gutter that I can reach by casting the whole rig, bait included to.

      Thanks OP.. I purchased one.

      • Yeah thats what I currently do but I want to give slide baiting a go with this rod. The barren sand comment was moreso about sliding from the rocks.

Not ideal as would've liked the 14ft Prevail II but its $200+. I'm going to grab some 5oz grapnels and give it a go when I go camping next.

        Tight lines

        • I haven't fished in many years, but I would think that you need to stand up high somewhere and read the beach. Where the waves don't break and darker areas of the water is where the water is flowing back out from the beach through a deeper gutter. That's where I would cast.

          • @kevsta: I'm okay with beach reading, my Q was moreso how does slide baiting differ in terms of bait placement, how to take advantage of the extra distance etc

@bobloblawlawblog: I used to do slide baiting from beach using livebait, it makes it easier to slide say a live yakka/ mullet/ small salmon than trying to cast the livie

@JepunK: Same but it's too much fuss. I just drone drop now.

Between edge of features such as rocks/weeds and the sand.

Species like whiting will travel in schools and will move from sand to the features to eat little morsels.

Reef species will move from features to sand where food is easily spotted.

Casting into weeds will bury your bait.

      • what do you go for with your drone? assume its not whiting haha.

if sliding or dropping for jew etc where would you aim to place your bait?

          Sharks. Tag and release.

  • Was gonna grab one at this price but it's now showing as $85.68 delivered.

    • Damn. Though at $85 it's still decent value. I don't know what rods would be better value at that price range tbh

      • Yeah there isn't a lot in this price range for 10ft rods in a similar spec.
Dinga has the Rovex Revenge 10ft 6-15kg rating at $59

I've still got a couple of older Rovex Barrio rods in 10ft size that are just rebadged Penn Spinfisher Big Game surf rods.

I would have grabbed the Battalion at $59 just because you can never have too much fishing gear not because I needed it :-)

yeah i justified as my backup heavy rod haha. though now that i have it ill waste even more money to try slide baiting since none of my other rods can really cast 5oz leads

good to know there are others with the same affliction as me haha

Same - was about to pull the trigger but looks like the price went up

  • $110 now. no go. :(
