[NSW] Can I Pick up My Mail from a PO Box in Another LGA?

Hello,

I am still confused with these COVID restrictions, says Post Office is open. I get email notifications say that I have to pick up my mail from PO Box. However my PO Box isn't within 5KM or in my LGA. Am I allow to go there and just pick up my mail?

Thanks in advance.

    • I think redirection would be a good idea! Thank you

        We have a pobox in another LGA.
        We paid for redirection for last year's lockdown and have also paid for this year.
        It works well. They even sent all already-present-items in the pobox over when we re-started the redirection a few months ago.

    • It's higher than $1000 i think

      • Increased fines for Public Health Order breaches (from 12.01am, Monday, 16 August):

        $5,000 on the spot fine for breaching self-isolation rules;
        $5,000 on the spot fine for lying on a permit (already a criminal offence);
        $5,000 on the spot fine for lying to a contact tracer (already a criminal offence);

        $1,000 for breach of a public health order

    No, but your cat can.

  • Can I Pick up My Mail from a PO Box in Another LGA?

    Can. You also can pickup $5000 along the way. Its bonus.

    • You mean -5000?

      • Oh semantics!

  • It's a grey area IMO, however, with a very dark shade. You may have essential items going there, however it would have been best to have this 'addressed' before now. Looks like redirection is the the only solution, and possibly a nearer Post Office if available?

    Don't risk a $5000 fine, and or possible spread of disease. :)

    Call your the Post office where your PO box is, mine was very nice and sent the items in my PO box to my home address while I waited for my redirection to kick in.

  • why would you ask here rather than call the post office concerned?

  • Definitely.The crossing the ban on other LGAs is only for work purposes.

  • I had the same concern.

    Called the post office and the hotline. As I understood at the time, the answer was yes. (That was a few weeks ago now though.)
    The conclusion was, mail communication is a mandatory/essential service. It was noted that the usual requirements of course were in place - social distancing, direct travel, mask etc.

    In the end, I had the post office redirect my mail and parcels instead. Due for another forward of mail in the coming week or so.

    Call the hotline and check with them. I believe you should be ok, providing this is not an excuse or an attempt to find a loophole! Some rules may have changed since then.

    • How much do you pay for mail forwarding for few weeks or a month?

      • I was lucky and asked for a once-off as I had quite a lot of parcels there (around 10 deliveries) and 3 weeks worth of mail. Bit of a back story as I'd asked a mate in that LGA to collect for me, before making the call to the hotline etc. Organised with the PO agent to approve my mate to collect, but in the end, he didn't. So was lucky that the PO agent redirected for me free. I'd fully expected to pay though.

        It should only be the standard AP charges at most. $+/- 5 or so I'd guess, depending on the size of your parcel.
        Just get in contact with the AP call centre or online chat. The PO will need a reference number for you.

        I think the covid hotline is 24/7, so give them a call and ask. 👍
