Please note it is for Melbourne only.

Is compensation now a deal? May be better in Forums.
Unless you are a Metro customer, there is no compensation.
Should put location & who can benefit in title.

  • +3

This isn't a deal, it's compensation to current customers.

  • -3

This is the NORMAL compensation when Metro results are below the threshold, this is not a BARGAIN compensation…

If there there was a code to get more daily tickets then it might be a bargain…

Also, I'd rather they get the trains running on time, rather than give us a measly ticket for getting late to work…

    • agreed.

And if it was not posted here the majority of people would not know about it.

    Thanks for posting this!

    • +2

And if it was not posted here the

It's posted on pretty much every train station each month… I can't see how anyone would miss it…

It's also posted on their website…

      • +5

Ours still has the results up from October last year.

      • +2

I haven't seen it up yet. I guess it's not in their interest to put it up.

      • +4

Every time I'm at the station, I'm either just waking up or just nodding off…

        Thanks for this.

      • i catch trams and buses mainly, so shut the hell up

I can't understand why in this day and age you can't just apply online…

        • +15

Applying offline makes it harder, therefore reduces the number of claims they have to accommodate.

      • How do you send with no postage? You have to put it in an envelope?

  • +8

Metro are such dogs. They fall below the threshold on a full months worth of service so we receive ONE daily ticket. Cheers.

  • +14

I'm a Myki customer and I don't care what those negative nancies above say, if this hadn't been posted then I would never have known about it so I've given a '+'. Thanks.

    • +3

      Just bookmark this page

      http://www.metrotrains.com.au/About-us/Metro-Performance/Mon…

and set a reminder each month to check it… That way you will never miss out…

      • Or just post it here. I live in another state and couldn't give a stuff.

      • +1

That's what I do, and I send a group email out to my whole floor at work!

      • +1

I use http://www.changedetection.com/ to monitor changes on websites. Works well and is free. May be useful here…

    • +1

I usually check each month but since Metro fiddled their timetables last year they have been meeting targets I forgot to check this month.

I have a yearly Myki - I may see if I can get the compo put on to another nominated card.

  • +3

no criticism of the post is intended, but for those who've already paid for an annual pass, how does this provide any compensation ?

They should be giving cash-back for passholders.

Just like tollways shouldn't charge a toll when they're blocked, especially by roadworks.

    • +3

if you have an annual pass, you can claim.

Just submit a photocopy of your card.

(But I do see how it's pointless since you can't use it till one year time)

      • -1

        sell it on ebay…

      • +2

Yeah it's a pretty annoying method of compensation. Not valuable to the only ones who receive it.

  • +1

    ^^^^

Im sure ppl dont go on metro side all the time

The yearly thing is a issue but hey make a claim & give to a freind..

  • +1

Okay so this is only for people who have a monthly (or longer) metcard ticket, and you have to attach a copy of it for the form, not just people who travelled a few times on a daily ticket in Feb.

    • there will be very few people who fit those conditions

      • +6

Only the thousands of people that work in Melbourne City!

      • -3

        Ha ha, you are unemployed!

  • +1

2 weeks ago Brisbane got free transport for a day due to similar reasons. That was posted here and nobody complained

    • +1

yeah but that applied to everyone (in Brisbane) and didn't require forms to be completed to prove you were effected. It was worth broadcasting to those who would not normally use the service that they could.

ie to me this isn't a bargain as you can't get in on the 'deal' after the fact. Plus I'm in Perth and care little for your soggy eastern territories.

    • +1

Yeah but that is no compensation for yearly/monthly holders.
At least you can have a daily ticket /daily myki pass to use at the end of your yearly or monthly with Metro.

      • My guess is that by then, you will buy another pass as it is good value, rather than use the free ticket & pay more for the next period.

Of course could make a wonderful gift, in a nice box with a ribbon around it. Imagine the look on the loved ones face - a lovely new public transport ticket!
And I wonder why people didn't know they could/would want to claim it??

        • +1

Yes you can buy another pass once your yearly ticket expires, but it does not take effect until you validate it, leaving you free to offset by the amount of compensation tickets you have accumulated through the year.

Also if you have the passes credited to your myki, it automatically adds the days on the end, even if you rebuy a yearly pass on the same myki.

'By your guess' - you are wrong.

        • That's what happens when I guess, and have absolutely no knowledge of your system, only what others have posted. Was responding to the statement about free public transport in my area & wandered into your post. Sorry.

Still, 2013 is a long way away to use a ticket for some.
Hope people remember to use it.

Is the system that bad you build up a lot of compensation tickets? Seems a complex process of applying for compensation. Surely there could be an automatic system. I guess that has been grumbled over before.

        • +1

          Thats cool mate,

Last calendar year Metro issued compensation about 8 of the 12 months, and it meant about 14 free daily tickets (you get 1 for performance i.e on time, and one for delivery i.e percentage of service. This is not bad as that is nearly 3 weeks free travel if you can be bothered monitoring the website (or putting in a calendar entry for about the 10th of each month) and sending in a copy of your ticket. (its free postage and not that hard to do IMO)

Recently Metro performance has been better on paper, therefore less compensation, but I am dubious as to how the stats are collected!

I am all for an online or automatic claims service, but I doubt it will happen as I am sure many more would adopt the idea ;)

The government sets the standard for what the performance is set at, and it agrees on what suitable compensation and method of compensation should be. Maybe in the next contract they will ask the provider to provide a more convenient method of claiming compensation - who knows!

          Cheers.

    • The Qld deal was…
Offered during an election campaign to appease angry users
Government run transport system (private & public operators)
      - so the Government paid out $1M, not the operators
There was no contractual obligation to provide this, unlike in Melbourne
One-off major failure of government owned passenger rail network
      - possibly due to maintenance issue as power line fell on tracks
      So reasons were different

Offered to anyone in SEQld, including visitors, not limited to a portion of travellers as compensation through complex process of a claim
Free travel from Surfers to Noosa, rather than a ticket in your usual travel area- quite a bonus.
Many deals are geographically limited, but needed to be stated in the original title.
If someone was visiting Melbourne, it would not be available to them. Many tourists benefited from the Brissie deal, some even were from Melbourne!
And Melbourne people did complain about it.

So that was a real deal - free transport, available to anyone in the region even if they were not affected by the transport problems or never used the system, rather than post-dated deal to meet stated operation conditions for those who had already bought.

And as this 'deal' is a published contactual obligation on the operator, I can't see why this would be classified as a deal rather than news in a forum, as you can not go out & get it unless you already bought the product.
(Its a bit like promoting life insurance to the dead - its too late to buy, but handy if you already entered into the deal. But then your family should be aware of the compensation benefit & claim it.)

  • Bring back Connex!

    • +1

      are you serious?

  • What about the people who use Myki money? As a student I travel most days, but not every day so I don't buy the Myki Pass. I've still had my fair share of late trains though.

    • -1

      try the second link….

  • i wish Transperth would do something similar -_-

    • It's pretty rare for Transperth Trains not to meet their service targets.

  • -1

Compensation is still not a bargain

    • +1

but compensation for those who is not informed may exhibit characteritics of bargain.

    • In the past 18 months, I sent separate claim requests for THREE claimable months, meeting all their criteria and I am to date still waiting for the so-called compensation (or any response for that matter). My girlfriend received 1 or 2 of the 3.

So, YMMV. However for me, including Tal_Shiar's reasoning above, it's not a bargain.

      • +3

I have always received mine within a few weeks.

There is a dodgy line in the claim criteria which causes people to claim for the wrong months, hence not getting any compensation at all.

For example, if you first validated your monthly ticket on 3rd March, it will expire on 2nd April. Most people will think that since the ticket was valid in March, they can claim March's compensation. THIS IS INCORRECT!
The above ticket would only be able to claim April's compensation. (even though the ticket was only valid on 2 days of April)

Reason: there is a line which states "ticket must be valid on the FIRST day of the month"

        • Thanks for the explanation. It is possible that this may be the reason why however I cannot confirm for certain. It is something I'll definitely keep in mind for future compensation claims.

    • My hero!

  • +1

Who cares about petty board rules. This is great for the people who benefit from it.

    The spirit of Ozbargain!!!!!!!!!

    • +1

Its news for a forum entry, but not a deal anyone in your region can now get.
We can not go back in time, buy the ticket, and claim in the present. Its a contactual compensation, which users should be aware of.

Yes, very handy to know about. But is OB going to full of things you can claim in case you missed reading about them?? Next unemployment benefits as a deal, or pension, seniors cards - many people fail to be aware of what may be available to them. Or to keep your receipt as you get FREE repair under warranty - got to love that deal? But a deal is surely something we can get now, not compensation for failure of an operator to live up to imposed obligations. If you already bought the ticket, it is saying you paid too much after the fact.

  • +1

There's also the question of if Metro even honours this. I applied for this last year and have yet to receive my daily ticket. Since I sent in my ticket along with my form, I have no proof of my entitlement.

  • +1

I think I collected like 7-8 full fare daily's last year (may include some from the year before), not bad considering I'm on concession, and a late train has only ever really affected me once.

    • Yep I have collected every time for the last 2 years, Up until I had to switch to MYKI, I had been keeping the compo tickets and giving them to family and friends to use
The yearly rate I pay is about half price and they are better off with them than me.

I have never not got my tickets, and always send in a photocopy, never the original just in case.

  • +1

    Yeah Good on yer.
You deserve a vote and to re-issue the deal each month a 'free' one day refund or extension is available.
It would cost them more than my $3.70 refund just to process the application.
It may seem a small amount for the effort but send a strong signal through to the Metro owners.
(or maybe I feel good about this small act of defiance!)

  • For those who claimed Feb compensation with Myki, check up on it.

Got the confirmation letter but no free day pass loaded. Rang up to complain again. Not impressed.

    • For myki they do not refund in terms of a "day pass", instead they do sort of a "cash refund" onto your myki card. So, the amount of cash on your myki should increase.

    • I got the money put on to my daughter's Myki card. They added about $11 and I did notice it wasn't showing up until a few days after receiving the letter.

Compo for the crappy service in March is also available now.
