Been on the lookout for one of these for awhile, seems to be a good price based on camelcamelcamel.

Limited time deal, not sure how long it will last.

Non S version is a bit cheaper by a couple of dollars at $37.49

  • Whats the difference between the S and Non S version?

    • Non-obvious - the S version appears to include the thermal probe (can be purchased separately)

      The only difference

  • +1

    Esp8266 inside?

    • +2

Don't need to flash them if you use HA, works native offline

      • 🤩

  • Thanks OP. I've been kicking myself years ago for buying the mini instead of the Pro. I've corrected that mistake now.

    • Am I missing anything - is there any difference between the mini and pro other than the RF capability?

i.e. if I only want to use it with an IR device (aircon), any reason why I wouldn't buy the mini?

      • +2

No reason. The rm4 mini s is also on sale at $25.

        • Thanks for that, the RM4 Mini S is still on sale for $25 and managed to get that instead of the Pro S in the OP. Didn't really need RF anyway so happy to save a bit.

        • Thanks - bought the mini last night

      • +1

Go for the mini if you only want to control IR devices. However, if you plan to control any RF devices later on then better to get the pro now to future proof yourself. Surprisingly, the rm pro and mini haven't dropped in price for a long time.

  • I'm guessing this will control a ceiling fan speed depending on room temperature? (DC fan with 6 speed remote)

    • +1

It should be able to turn on and off but you may have a harder time choosing a specific speed setting. I believe it can learn commands but I've not found it terribly intuitive with the mini. I'd still highly recommend it for convenience overall.

      • +1

For my pedestal fan, where the speed control is just a button that cycles through the settings rather than directly selecting speeds, I created scripts in HA like "fan speed minus one", which sends [speeds - 1] button presses via the RM4. Direct speed settings, no, because there is no feedback from the fan to say what speed it is on.

    • +1

Use two Pro S's to control 4 Mercator DC fans, including speed. No issues after learning the remote commands via RF. The default frequency worked great.

    • +1

Yes you can, get HA, then one of those xiaomi thermometer.
Only down side since its not synchronized, so HA don't have the current status of the fan.

      • I've got the mi temp sensors, not ventured down the Home Assistant route. Just want to turn down/off the fan in daughters bedroom during the night

  • Whats the difference between this and logitech harmony remote control? Logitech harmony companion i know has bluetooth and IR but its giving me the sh*ts as i have to repeat the commands when switching tv, foxtel and av receiver on

    • +2

Logitechs entire smart remote system is retired i believe.

      • Yeah i know! But why is there a big price difference between this product and Logitech harmony?

        • +3

Logitech have a lot of pen pushers on a huge salary.

        • +1

The key benefit of the Harmony system is their remotes, which are most expensive components. The rm4 pro is just the hub if you want to compare the two.

          • @bargainshooter: Thanks @bargainshooter. Yeah i notched that. But other than that, they are pretty similar. Except Harmony also has bluetooth. I find Logitech harmony companion remote control cr*p if you compare it to say, Logitech harmony 650. The 650 has the lcd screen and can correct or fix any issues on the remote, whereas the companion, you’ll need to use the app to fix any issues.

            • @eesshh: Have you tried using the IR blasters connected to the hub for better placement near your devices? I find the hub itself blasts out IR pretty effectively and haven't had any issues with missed commands but maybe might help.

If you were lucky enough to find a cheap Harmony Touch or Ultimate One second hand maybe, you can pair it with your existing hub set up too.
