Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook 8GB/256GB 13.3" OLED, Keyboard + Pen $797 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ to Metro) @ Officeworks

520

This unit is priced the same as elsewhere (JB Hifi & Catch, 4gb ram/128gb storage) but the model sold at Officeworks it has more RAM, more HDD space and the USI pen included.

It's shown as "NEW" on the officeworks website, so i'm not sure if this is a pricing error… so be quick if you're keen. Great review by ChromeUnboxed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T4trbbar-M

Anyway, looked good to me and the reviews have been good so I pulled the trigger and got myself one. Looking forward to having a 13.3" OLED screen for media consumption. 8gb ram and 256gb storage is a bonus!

NOTE: Priced at $998 at Retravision https://www.retravision.com.au/lenovo-133inch-ideapad-duet-5…

$800, might as well buy a laptop at that price.

    • +2

Some people spend that much on a phone!

      • +1

some people just want a high end chromebook

be that as it may, this is no x86 and its still emmc

plus side is that it has 15hrs

      • To make tiktoks with the superior camera.

        • Can be called an investment… Tax deductible even

    • +6

Surface Pro is the same form factor as this costs way more…

      • +3

        Isnt surface pro Windows?

        • -2

And it's much better than chrome, pen better as well.
Cant understand why someone still buying Chromebooks. They are limited in use, lugging and slow. When its cost about $200 its ok but not for the same price as normal laptops

          • -1

@rwt: Certainly windows is much better than chrome - That's what the scammer said atleast :)

      • Aren’t surface pros like $1500 new now with no keyboard included?

    • +7

Not many laptops with OLED and active pen at that price..

    • +8

What $800 OLED laptop in this form factor and weight class performs as well on web services (which what ChromeOS is designed for)?

    • In this form factor, though? If so, can you share some models I can review. If a laptop for $800 has this FF, screen, battery life, I’m in! This also seems to come with the back cover, keyboard and pen.

    • It is a laptop.

  • -2

    Price in title please.

  • +6

Hopefully it drops in price as fast as the old Duet did.

    • +2

It should, this is selling for under $400 usd in the states for the 8gb model

      • Does the US one come with the covers and the pen? The OW does.

        • They're standard accessories, not optional

Edit: the kickstand and kb are standard. Pen is optional.

          • @krisspy: Ah yep, you’re right. .

Still, $499 USD on Best Buy. website. With no pen. Buying one would bring it up to about $550. Plus the US one has 128GB and the OW one was 256gb. Then you need to add on sales tax for everything. And after all that, Officeworks seems pretty decent.

      • How much is it priced after tax or is that state dependant?

      • us$400 + stylus + shipping +tax = A$740. Not a huge difference.

  • +3

All stores near me have it out of stock. Suspect there's an error somewhere.

Edit: a handful of stores in NSW say limited stock.

It's a great price if it's actually available.

    • Out of stock aka limited stock

  • can this play fortnight?

    • I mean even the old one could?

    • +1

100%! You can use it everyday, even. No need to wait 14 days.

  • -4

Way to expensive compare previous version.

    • +1

Barely comparable to the old version. Much bigger screen, OLED, pen included etc.

      • -5

Yep, 13" screen with 1080p resolution, must be amazing view.

        • +2

1080p is absolutely fine at that size imo. More is trading off speed and battery life.

        • Yeah bruh! Should have been a 20 inch 8K, touch screen and only $199.

          • @[Deactivated]: Any tablet with $800 price tag still use 1080 screen?

            • +4

@noodlefan: It’s a 13 inch screen. Also it is an OLED which doesn’t require backlighting. With a 1080p resolution, that is a perfect combo of quality and use time. This deal also comes with the back cover, keyboard cover and the USI pen. Pretty good value. I can’t think of any better

  • +6

Have a good play at the unit before buying. I found the screen blurry compared to my hp laptop which is also 13.3" fhd. Not sure if the oled is pentile but it was noticeable. Speakers are also bad on these, tinny sound remenicent of a phone and not a tablet. The keyboard is trippy, you sometimes have to reconnect it as the tablet doesn't recognise it first go and switch to keyboard mode.

I found the screen and sound better on the S7 Fe much better if you're after a media device.

    • This is why I'm not buying one even though I LOVE the original Duet. Huge pixel density downgrade to have only a 1080P PenTile screen in this. Maybe fine as a laptop, not so much working with documents close up. Really hoping that a future Duet comes out a touch larger than original with 8GB ram and faster CPU. So I'm more than happy waiting for the next gen.

  • +1

Agree with comment above re screen with the addition that it’s still too slow for $800……

Like I have the og Duet and find it slow but I still love it because it’s tiny and costs $250. At $800 nah. Returned mine to JB.

At $800 I recommend getting Surface Go 2. You can pick up the whole package for that price and it’s an objectively superior machine.

  • Which ecosystem is better, chromebook or android tablet?

    • -1

Android just edges out Chromebook despite being related.

      • +4

Possibly true but Chromebooks have a full desktop browser plus apps which in theory could make it superior to Android and iPad tablets, but maybe not in practice?

        • -1

The issue I have with Chrome OS is that a lot of apps/games are hit and miss when they aren't intentional designed with Chromebooks in mind.

          • +2

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: For me, having the full desktop browser is more important. Both IOS and Android cripple their browsers.

Android support is nice, but if a particular app does not work, I can just pull out my phone.

      • +4

They aren't really very close relatives, ChromeOS is from ChromiumOS which is a butchered version of Gentoo. While both android and Gentoo use a version of the Linux kernel, they are different in basically every other way imaginable.

A Chromebook is a closer relative to a webserver than it is an Android phone. Although google has done a lot of cool stuff to allow android apps to run.

        • It's way easier to dual boot native Linux on Chrome book than Android tablet. I have the old version duet running native gentoo on it, but it's screen/keyboard size is a bit small for daily use.

Ordered one to replace my X1. The second usb c port makes connecting external display much easier with power on too

    • +1

If you like getting security updates and don't really install a lot of app outside play stores (Tachiyomi, F-droid, Youtube Vanced, etc) then I'd suggest Chromebook (Yes, you can still sideload apps that's not in play store but it's a chore to get them up to date manually)

Otherwise Android tablet for generally more compatible apps especially for games I guess.

    • +4

Do you want a full Chrome browser with extensions etc and the ability to run Linux and a few Android apps or do you want Android apps and a basic Chrome browser?

      • +1

Very lame that they haven't added extensions etc to the Android Chrome

        • +1

Use Kiwi Browser on my phone and can add most of my useful extensions :)

          • @Limbot: I switched to Firefox.. no idea how people live without at least an adblocker!

    • Honestly found chrome OS jarring. Apps can have an Android version or Chrome OS version. Some apps can't be forced to window mode.

I preferred the productivity mode like dex on Android much better to use.

      • ChromeOS apps are being discontinued as of (October?) this year, in favour of Android and web apps. MS Office also stopped supported the platform this year.

Realistically, a lot of apps were a bit janky to begin with, and the web equivalents have the same functionality anyway. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll need to be online all the time, as many web apps can be run offline.

        • You can install Linux app in Chrome book like libreoffice, Firefox, gimp etc

    • +1

if u need a full version of Chrome browser the chromebook is better,
a full version of chrome browser would let u use ONLINE microsoft office, a few extra chrome browser add-on.
but the down side is not all android apps ar compatible.

    • +2

Chromebooks offer more security, management and productivity options.
Android tablets offer better game performance.

      Chromebooks:
      - power up and update very fast
      - have support for regular updates for 7 years or so
      - run linux and android apps in a virtualised environment, which may result in lower performance, and underutilised graphics hardware.
      - often have USI pen support for drawing in apps
      - often can support extended multiple displays
      - have simple updates in the background
      - can be up and running very quickly, a lot of the config is saved with your google account.

      Android tablets:
      - take longer to power up
      - take longer to set up
      - only offer limited or no updates
      - due to the above, are less secure and are likely to offer more known vulnerabilities to be exploited
      - offer better performance for android applications using a more direct hardware interface
      - some models offer a limited desktop experience (e.g. Samsung DeX, Lenovo PC mode) but the few that do only have limited external monitor capability (e.g. only one external screen with limited resolution options)

  • +4

very good deal op. thank you

  • Can this play 4k video without issue? I couldn't find the resolution specs listed anywhere

    • That was the main reason I returned my Duet - the chipset was limited to a fairly poor external output resolution

  • +1

I just bought one if these and love it! Ticked all the boxes for me and a good price. Used discounted GC to get 15% off.

  • +3

eMMC storage should be at least in the description. eMMC is absolute gArbage compared to even sata II m.2 drives. That is undoubtedly the performance bottleneck on this Chromebook.

    • eMMC is absolute gArbage

How did we ever survive in the days of hard drives? I hear some people still use them.
      (eMMC is way faster)

  • I returned my cheaper duet because I could only copy files to it via google drive and not directly. It felt cloud locked.

    • use a usb drive to move files,
chromeOS just the same as Windows, u can't move files like androids, cloud/usb drive/network share those ar the methods.

should add a bit more to get this, i3 core and win10

    • 4GB RAM and for windows in 2021

      • u ar not playing large 3d games or lots of multitasking with a "tablet" like those, 4G is a bit low but should be enough.

    • +3

Surface Keyboard, Surface Pen and Arc Mouse sold separately

      • yes, but the question is u rather get a toyota with free carpets or ferrari but u need to buy ur own carpets?

        • Not exactly
Ferrari is 100K, carpet is $100, that is 1/1000 extra cost

          but
surface pro $860 vs Keyboard plus mouse > $200, that is 1/4 of extra coset

  • People in this thread recommending low end Windows laptops for this price, Surface Go has terrible specs for the price, you can get a Ryzen 5600H laptop for less than 1,000.

    I upgraded my 8GB 5600H to a second 3200Mhz stick for A$40 from Amazon.

    • +1

This guy's kinda right, but if you need a uhh convertable tablet, you need a convertable tablet.

      • Lenovo Chromebook Duet for $275 fit that well, I have it as a portable loungeroom device as an accessory to my 5600H laptop.

    • +1

How's the battery life and weight on that 5600H?

      • Fairly good once I messed with the batter power settings, performance is still good despite lasting almost as long as my Thinkpad i5-8250u.

I get maybe 5-6hrs of non intensive battery life, not up there with ultrabooks, but its good considering as it uses Optimus to only run on iGPU instead of the GTX3050.

  • Getting rid of my almost brand new HP x2 11 Chromebook with built in 4G!!!! ( on Gummie) Only just got it several weeks ago brand new - my loss!

    An $800 chromebook.

    An

    $800

    chromebook.

We really should rename the site ozrich or richbargin.

    • Does it mean that we shouldn't list high end Apple products also, even when they are on sale @ihatepeople. Bah Humbug

      • Yes.

  • For those who have access to JB Hi-Fi Commercial / Solutions the price for the lower spec'ed model is $750.
I'd probably for the Officeworks one myself.

    https://www.jbcommercial.com.au/corporatebenefits/product/Lenovo_Duet_5_13.3_Full_HD_OLED_Chromebook_(128GB)/53839
128GB eMMC storage with 4GB RAM
    $738.32 + Delivery From $12.00

The Good Guys Commercial only has the Flex model (non-OLED)
    https://www.thegoodguyscommercial.com.au/lenovo-flex-5-133-i…
    RAM Size:8GB
    Storage Size:256GB
    $749.00

  • Looks like these are shipping. Assuming the sent product is actually the 256gb variant looks like a legit deal. Wonder if officeworks scored an awesome exclusive or lenovo messed Australian launch

  • +1

My unit arrived today. I already own 3 other chromebooks so I know exactly what to expect (these are my web consumption devices, not my primary work machine).

I can say I'm very happy, the OLED screen is super nice. If you watch movies or TV at night using a laptop, can't get better than the black levels on this OLED display…

    • Luck you. How is the performance.
