For example here’s one with a 175 degree fisheye, the last one I bought
AU $12.07 30% Off | 1Pcs Raspberry Pi Camera Module OV5647 5MP 175 Degree Wide Angle Fisheye Lens Raspberry Pi 3/2 Model B Camera Module
        https://a.aliexpress.com/_mrBcuNi

There are all sorts, this is the same camera module as the Jaycar one which is the original raspberry pi module and still produces decent image quality in good light.

Essentially they whack a CCTV lens on it which beats the pinhole

        • This one is more expensive. $12 + $ 4.5 postage. Plus gst

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: They vary, depending on sale and price etc.
The ones with an actual lens produce a much sharper image In my experience.
If you want like for like it’s about $5 plus tax

      links to lenses?

  • it mentions that its discontinued, will it work for future models?

    • +2

5MP version was replaced a few years back. The new version uses an 8MP sensor. AFAIK they both worth will all currently available versions of the RPi that support a camera. More info on the new version is available at https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/camera-module-v2/.

      • I haven’t seen generic 8MP modules using the Sony sensor…
Then there’s the new Hq camera module too but it’s pricey

      • Pi Zeros will work but require a different cable than the one provided here. But yes

Thanks, OP. Rather support local business. Ta!

Or buy the AliExpress one and make a $10 donation to a random Aussie business or favorite charity?

Having worked at Jaycar many many many years ago, they basically buy at the same price as Ali express and mark up about 400% on most items

        • These days they're just an Altronics outlet, really.

    • +7

Agree with the sentiment but jaycar is a Harvey Norman type business, not the most morally fine.

      • +2

Worse than Harvey Norman, at least HN don't do stuff like this

        • Wow, pretty despicable behaviour by Jaycar. I searched what happened in the end - and glad to find out that publicity, petition, customers deserting and shaming - in the end worked, and Jaycar discontinued the rip-off kit.

As a small business owner, it is way too onerous and costly to fight bigger companies via legal means. I can feel his sadness and resignation at the end of the video. Very glad this publicity route worked for him.

        • Yikes I never knew about this. Pretty shoddy to hear about the owner calling the Freetronics chap and asking for the PDF for his book to avoid the publishing contract in place. Somewhat to be expected for a company trying to compete with online sales. Hopefully they do less questionable things now?

    • No support for businesses who rip us off.

  • I just bought one for $10 on eBay and used a $5 voucher to bring it down to $5.

  • If you get the adaptor cable to drop down to a PiZeroW, theres enough processing power to do about 700-900p at 15fps for security cameras.

Fun projects, with a genuine use.

    • Indeed the Broadcom optimisations are crazy in raspbian

    • I have a PizeroW, could you elaborate your setup?

Almost as good as Pixel 6 Camera
    just 1 pixel less

  • What sort of integrations y'all doing, anything interesting?

    • Im considering doing an octoprint webcam, not the most exciting but functional enough.

      • +1

This is the exact thing I am doing. Hopefully it works well and I can find a decent mount to print.

        • Hey, same here. Does it need a longer cable to use for Octoprint?

      • +1

Then you should buy from aliexpress for one with better lens, this one is really hard to adjust focus, I broke mine an hour after receiving.

    • +2

I made a few remote spy cameras and installed them around your house.

        Then the officer said,
You better get a lawyer, son
You better get a real good one

        • Think you mean ociffer?

      • I put mine in your mums house
