On an Adelaide bus, the busdriver will literally not yet you on if they don't hear the "bing" of the metrocard machine. Not sure how you think so many people are somehow rorting the system…?
I think its more likely the people you are seeing hastily getting off are using cheaper child tickets instead.

      • How about on an Adelaide train or an Adelaide tram? I've never seen a driver do anything other than drive the vehicle?

Train you would need to vault over the ticket security gate in a ridiculously obvious manner should you be departing or terminating from the city. Tram, outside the free inner city area, there are plenty of ticket inspectors. Drivers do not get involved in both of these cases.

      • You do know you can board through the center doors.

You can just make that noise and they let you on.

        • I think they technically have a small display that actually confirms if it actually validates, whether they bother to check is another matter…..

P.S The best fun is when it validates but doesn't sound…. so you scan again and its says 'Already Validated' but glows red and makes a rejected sound(why not continue using a green visual indicator and the friendly ding instead….sigh)

This is only valid for fringe ticket holders

    • Why would they omit that critical info on the page?

Absolutely incorrect…. The intention is to promote going to the city for the festival, but not exclusively enforced for it.

Source: I work in the city and the gates are disabled at Adelaide station and they have staff positioned to waive you through saying free travel.

P.S Useless for me as I need to take a bus to my local station before I get on any City bound travel so I eventually pay anyway :( (2hour transfer window)

I was wondering why they were saying it was free on my way home from work in the city. I thought they were protesting

  • NSW watching closely…

Also free, until Sunday 20 March, is on-street parking after 6.00pm on weekdays or anytime on Saturday or Sunday within the city.
