If you are a current Skydrive user, just log-in and claim your 25GB of free online storage before they permanently make it only 7GB.

Go to the bottom left of your account page and click "Manage storage." You'll see a listing of storage plans, and under "SkyDrive Free" a button that says "Free Upgrade!" Just click it, and you're all good."
soakwashrinsespin on 24/04/2012 - 15:30 ¶Got the "Sorry, other storage plans are unavailable right now. Please check back later" message on two out of my three Windows Live accounts, but managed to upgrade to 25GB on another one. Not sure why one was eligible for the upgrade and the others weren't; I don't recall ever using Skydrive on any of the accounts.
batrarobin on 24/04/2012 - 19:48 ¶Mine worked… !!!! Was getting same error but then tried different browser. And it worked!!

+3 votesAccording to ArsTechnica:
Under the old system, users had 25 GB of non-synced SkyDrive cloud storage, and 5 GB of synced Mesh storage. Now, there's just a single 7 GB of synced storage, with paid options to buy more space, starting at $10 for 20 GB per year, up to $50 for 100 GB per year. Though this increases the amount of synced storage, it nonetheless represents a reduction in total storage availability. However, any users that signed up for SkyDrive before April 22, and who have uploaded at least one file to the service, are eligible for a free upgrade to 25 GB. Existing users with at least 4 GB uploaded will pick up the 25 GB update automatically.

+2 votesYeah….if anything this is a down grade. I almost want to neg it, but then again, I'm sure people will benefit from restoring the capacity they already had.
I do find it a bit of a cop out that existing users have to manually go and change the service back but.

+3 votesGreenGuava on 24/04/2012 - 15:55 ¶Wow, that was ridiculously easy. Not like the 5GB of photos I had to upload to Dropbox to get 5GB of extra storage. Thanks!
PlasticSpaceman on 24/04/2012 - 15:56 ¶Cool. Got 25Gb of space now…. no idea how/if I'll ever use it, but you never know… ;-)
Mikeshashimi on 24/04/2012 - 16:00 ¶"Your account has been upgraded
You now have 25 GB of free storage. Thanks for using SkyDrive!"no problems. Yay! no that i ever even use it tho.
blackfalcon53 on 24/04/2012 - 16:19 ¶Cheers! Didn't even remember I had a skydrive. Hope they link it to Xbox 360 would be great

-2 votesAm I going to be the only one to say this….? I ain't putting my data anywhere near a MS Live related product. I signed into Gmail on 31/8/2004 and have never looked at another bloated Live product again. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not hating on MS… just their bloated Live products. * shudder *
That said, thank you OP! I've logged into my account and grabbed the 25GB, just in case I ever get a WP7 device! ;)
+2 votesPretty much the same here. To other commentors, I started using Windows Live Mail for uni and it is unthinkable that it is so bad compared to Gmail… Don't get me wrong, it is a million times better than the Hotmail I left behind somewhere in 04 or 03, but still not as good as gmail, and much slower.

snappy1234 on 24/04/2012 - 17:58 ¶well i have had 2 live accounts for ages and never signed up for Skydrive and it just let me add a 25GB account…
(1 still says 7gb) can't complain :)thanks Bahgain

There is a condition which states that you must have previously unloaded at least one file into your skydrive in order to qualify for the upgrade.
(So, I think many of us must have accidentally or unconsciously uploaded a file sometime in the past).I probably should add that, you probably have unconsciously used skydrive through your use of Windows (MSN) messenger (while "sharing" a file on MSN)
+1 vote0ptus_Fail on 24/04/2012 - 17:28 ¶only good if you signed up previously
no good for us new users.
discrimination :)
oh well there are better alternatives im sure :)
7gb is just crap and you gotta pay for more..Mod: Foul language microsoft and thier crap
+1 votechansthename on 24/04/2012 - 18:00 ¶7gb is more than dropbox give off the bat. even now I only have 7.5gb in my dropbox and I've been taking every offer they give (other than referrals)

Skydrive used to be a feature of Windows (MSN) messenger when skydrive first came out. (Should be year 2008 or before). So, you probably, through your use of Windows messenger, unconsciously uploaded a file into skydrive while "sharing" a file with someone else.
Skydrive has been in existance for pretty long, then MSN scrapped it and closed everyone's account (in 2009), before reintroducing it again.
+3 votesAre you sure? It says here, " And unlike before, you can upload big files (up to 2 GB) and automatically sync files or entire folders to SkyDrive right from your PC."
GreenGuava on 24/04/2012 - 18:46 ¶Yep, the file limit has definitely been increased (See link in post above).
Increased upload sizes: Now you can upload and share files up to 2 GB.
