    • on your left side menu, you can choose free tree application from button "New."

    • You have to click on the + symbol at left and then to Free Tree Application

  • Finally after getting in, i got options for the crap trees only

  • Unfortunately like last time it only gives me a small subset of those options and not really suitable for us.

    • +1

Have you selected the 3 tree option? If not, you could try Bunnings at other locations.

      • Yeah, same story.

  • Does it have to be planted at the address? My friend wants a tree that is available in my council area but not hers. Can I get and give to her?

    • +4

Nope you can do with the tree whatever you want

  • Nice .. took 5 mins though
I got like 5 lemon trees already though… unfortunately I have problems with leaf miners and aphids :(

    • +1

I fight daily to remove eggs from the new leaves. So far I have managed to save a third of the leaves but it's a struggle

      • You manually removing? I'm gonna start using insecticides I think

        • I spray insecticides but it's not 100%. They still lay eggs. And the larvae don't get killed by spraying insecticide. So trying to fight the bugs with everything and having partial success

    • +1

Wait till the stink bugs move in. They're a menace!

      • Neighbours have a lemon tree at the fence and it's been a non stop stink bug orgy in there. It's gross and nothing I can really do about it coz it's not on my side.

        • just get some spray and spray it.

    • This year, I put a net around the tree which seems to have stopped the leaf miners. Also stopped the bees from pollinating too :(

      • You can use cotton buds to pollinate (but bees definitely do a better job!)

    • I use Neem Oil. Especially on new growth to prevent them from leaf curling.

Works on Aphids and Leaf miners.
Other options is to monitor, then spray them off with a Jet hose.

      • My Lots of Lemons Tree has been literally nuked by Citrus gall wasp. I had to trim so many branches that the tree looks like a creature without limbs now

  • None of the citrus seem available here :(

    • +4

Hope you selected one tree option, they are not available under three tree option.

    • +2

Only available if you select 1 tree.

    • +2

      Thanks both :)
Doesn't show if you select 3 and then change to 1.

  • Thanks OP!, got a Dwarf Lemon Lisbon

  • Can I nominate someone to pick up the tree instead?

  • +8

Please be a responsible plant parent, do not get this offer if you have little to no interest in gardening. They do not deserve to die in your hands.
The program is really marketed towards people who have some knowledge of gardening and not the general ozbargain community. So if you don't think you can keep it alive, let someone else get it instead.

    • Cmon, I just want to give it a crack.

Will this dwarf lemon lisbon need a much bigger pot straight away? How will I know when it's time?

      • +4

It probably won't need a much bigger pot straight away. A large pot right away may lead to over watering issues as the plant wouldn't be established enough to take water from the bottom of the pot effectively.
if it comes in say a 200mm pot (which I would assume it has been growing in there for a while), then a 300-350mm pot should suffice.

As for upsizing the pot, some things to look for:
        - you see quite a bit off roots coming out the bottom
        - slowed plant growth (note: could be other issues that cause this)
        - the plant is much taller then the pot (don't know much about the dwarf lisbon but I usually upsize if the plant is more than 2x the height of the pot)
        - it requires more frequent watering

You probably would only need to repot it about 2, maybe 3 times and it'll probably need at least a year between repotting

      • +2

The most accurate indicator of when a plant requires repotting is by taking a plant out of the pot, soil and all to inspect the plant.
What indicators do you look for and what do they mean?
First indicator is compacted soil, as the roots grow and soil is watered it’ll eventually become compacted. This can limit nutrient and water intake as the soil can no longer absorb water. Eventually starving and suffocating your tree.
The next indicator which happens alongside this is root growth. As the tree grows, it develops an extensive network of roots, but because space is limited in a pot the roots coil around the pot. This limits nutrient intake as it results in a similar effect to compacting soil.
A third indicator is root rot, generally this occurs with overwatering plants and allowing the soil to become the ideal environment for certain fungi to live in. They’ll consume roots and spread causing them to discolour from a pale white/yellow to brown. By this time it is possible to prune the rotten roots and disinfect the remaining healthy roots though it is labour intensive and the tree may still die.
All of these indicators contribute to the health of your tree and if your citrus tree (Lemon tree) an evergreen shrub is visibly dying then you should consider repotting as it can identify problems with its growth.

So tldr repotting is more of a preventative maintenance that’ll reset the compacted soil, stop your tree from developing pot-bound roots and helps you identify potential growth problems with the tree. You may choose to limit the size of your tree by frequent pruning, and you can always upgrade the size of the pot as you repot. You shouldn’t repot too frequently and aim for around 1.5 - 2 years even if the tree looks somewhat healthy.
It can be quite the task tbh and the lack of reporting is the reason why most new home owners eventually end up with dead potted trees.

  • Got a dwarf Eureka lemon tree! I figured they were easy-ish to grow in my quite shaded courtyard and will get the most use in cooking and cocktails :)

    • It needs full sun. I got the same too. This and the Magnolia are the only trees left. I wanted the Tahitian lime instead but the website never allowed me to enter my address correctly last night. Easy at 5am this morning.

Gov employees should be ashamed of themselves worst IT ever took nearly 2hrs to get the address situation working

    • just hope you don't have to log an DA application to council as the NSW Gov forced everyone off the functioning free council system onto this piece of SH!T then at the end send you a bill for $40 for using the planning portal (basically a hidden $40 transaction fee). Almost as big of a scam as the NSW Gov's "Return and Earn" where your told you "earn" 10c for returning a container when you actually paid an extra 15c for so your still down 5c (and your time and costs in returning a container you could have just but in your recycling)

ohh and i doubt they are Government Employees, most likely low paid contractors of Accenture and the like in a developing country

  • Tried doing this on mobile earlier today. I don't have the stamina to persevere through the errors.

  • Went through quite quickly now.

    • Does it matter if your address isn’t quite the right one? I got sick of the address thing.

  • +1

anyone from NSW ePlanning department care to disclose how much they paid the contractor to create such shitty webpage?

    • +2

      Free from tafe students.

      • Even Tafe students would be ashamed to claim this site as their own work.
Big fat F if you turned this in

    • +1

Outsourced to some giant tech firm. Gov employees tick some boxes and call it a day.

NSW gov websites are so backwards and every time they try to release a new website or portal or link what i've noticed is its a patch on patch of junk

When i was trying to book my vaccine during NSW wave last year they ran the traffic through ServiceNOW. Who in their right mind would redirect all traffic to Service NOW

  • Be good if the ACT Government would do something like this. Unlikely though.

    • +1

      NSW: Liberal/National.
      ACT: Labor/Greens. Not much green?

  • The only options for me to choose was magnolias or Lilly Pillies. I really wanted a citrus tree :(

    • Sign up to notifications next time and get in quick as they get taken by others fairly quickly

      • Or just check Ozbargain religiously.

  • When is that coming to Perth?

    • +1

Vote liberals. They are splashing the cash before the elections

    • +1

same here, waiting on sms / phone to collect.

Just picked up my tree from Bunnings Kingsgrove. The helpful employee there said that many trees are going unclaimed, and after seven days they get donated to schools, etc., else they’ll die sitting in the warehouse. Apparently some guy drove down from the Central Coast to claim his tree three weeks after the pick-up notice, and cracked the shits when his tree was no longer there. Manager had to come down and give him a (non-free) tree to shut him up.

I muttered Crikey, I hope he wasn’t an OzBargainer under my breath, but the Bunnings employee must have heard me because they then said, “OzBargain! That’s the one! Said he found about it on the OzBargain website, and if they didn’t give him his free tree he would leave a bad review there and we’d never sell another (free) tree again!”

So I assured the Bunnings employee that OzBargain is a caring, respectful community of helpful people… I mean the vast majority are… seriously there are at most 20% of OzBargainers who are self-entitled, rapacious jerks… 25% tops.

For some reason they didn’t sound convinced, but I tried my best to set the record straight

    • Did you get SMS, email, or phone from Bunnings to let you know it is ready for collection?? I only got the email saying you will be advised when ready for collection and that was on 11 April 2022? So not sure what is going on..
Edit: I called the general Bunnings no supplied with the free-tree email and they said it will be staggered stock and most trees has not been supplied by nursery yet, so just be patient..

      • SMS and e-mail within an hour of each other

  • +1

Got call from Bunnings today, ready for collection.

    • Collected..

      • That was a magnolia yeah?
        What’s the size like?

I’m waiting on dwarf lemon tree.

  • Thanks to the OP for the post.

I applied on my Dad's behalf (what a drama that was!) and he collected his plants today. Dad's excited and so was the Bunnings worker. :-) He told my dad that store had over 170 customer orders ready for collection. I think he was glad people were coming in to collect.

  • Finally got my mandy! :D

  • Got a call today - collected it straight after (little Dwarf Lemon) @ Bunnings Lidcombe

  • Got an email today to say I can collect my dwarf Tahitian lime tree from Bunnings Kingsgrove :)

  • Registered for tree last year and again this year, never heard from them even. Waste of time filling in the boxes. Had I just bought one last year might be looking at a nice tree by now
