  • Sadly the accessories like solar panels and additional batteries aren’t on sale.

A lot of the other retailers are having the same deal so I’d probably go with them if you can get a discounted gift card like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.

The only people I have knocking are the postie and Uber eats

    • At least your dinner doesn't get cold.

And we all know posties don't knock. They drop, photo and run

    • I think they're useful for deliveries.

Also lcky you if that's all who are at your door. i once made the mistake of answering the door and now have several people (Jehovahs witnesses) who come around annually and I really know how to get rid of them. Always waste 10-15 minutes chatting with them and receive 3-5 pamphlets. So now if i see them outside, i just pretend I'm not home

    • It’s one of those things you don’t need until you need it. On the other hand you can talk to your postman and get alerts of when he comes.

Why is there a version 4? What a load of crap. If they couldn't get it right by v2 this is nothing more than planned obsolescence. Rubbish.

    • What's wrong with v4? Wouldn't it be improved modep?

      • -3

Sure. But what technology does it have that they couldn't have foreseen and put in v2?

You need to Google "planned obsolescence"

        • I think you do, since the v2 is still sold and not in any way obsolete.

Technology gets better over time, that's just common sense.

          • -2

@ankti231: I agree as a general rule that technology does get better over time. But this is a camera/doorbell. Tell me what specifically is better about v4 that they couldn't have easily done two generations ago on a $300 item?

It's planned obsolescence, at consumer expense. Trying to create an upgrade cycle and keep the second hand market depressed on old models. Nothing more.

Googled the difference - turns out not much that I saw. 5 degrees expanded view, also allows 5ghz wifi (unnecessary), and a seperate sensor that continually takes pictures to provide a "what happened before the motion sensor was activated" log.

So if earlier versions are more affordable, makes sense to me

      • Thanks. Maybe some $ on the extra sensor but overall i think it supports my point of view on planned obsolescence.

  • The 2-Pack Spotlight Cam Wired is discounted to $370 on their website, from $529.

I want to continually record the building works going on next door, so I have a record of what they are doing.
Can anyone advise if this is a good solution?
    .

    • You need a subscription to record and view old footage. You get one month free then it’s a monthly subscription. Also video may not be that clear if the construction site is far away.

      • From memory not too pricy if just one camera, isn’t it something like $40 a year to record?
We’ve got a wired cam at our front door and it’s good when we aren’t home for alerts etc, don’t have the record subscription yet but if these possums keep desecrating my driveway and path I think monitoring them is the next step 😂

        • +1

To record costs $59.40 per year, per camera.

          • @check: Sheesh pretty sure this has jumped up, could be mistaken but 👍🏻

          • +1

@check: $49.95 if you pay annually

Ring cameras are not capable of continually recording. Even with the subscription they only record when there's motion for a maximum of 120 seconds.

      • +1

@ankti231 Thanks for mentioning that Ring cameras are not capable of continually recording.

So they are not a solution for me. I want a continuous recording for a week or two.
