  • Good price. Mine's locked in at $95 from Amazon July pre-order as a physical disc collector.

For those that prefer digital or just want it cheaper, worth noting that since there's a PS5 GOWR bundle, there may be some cheap keys that flood marketplaces soon (like they did for HFW).

    • +7

Physical discs all the way. Almost always cheaper, costs can be recuperated by selling the game once done with it.

On occasion when I purchase with a credit card that has price protection, I end up in profit after selling the game and claiming price protection on top.

      • I just like collecting the game and being able to display it on a shelf library. Appeals to the collector in me.

I severely dislike this recent phenomenon of physical collector's editions that only contain a digital download code. If they're going to make you pay so much for those editions, they may as well give you a disc. Otherwise that ripped off feeling sets in, and the joy of having the special edition dies.

    • +1

Have you got any sites you've bought keys off for PS4/PS5 games?

I've done some rudimentary google searching and the sites look even dodgier than those that sell Steam cd keys (which I've done before). I'm not worried about getting scammed, but I'd prefer avoiding getting the reach around

Why Sony first title goes up so much that RRP is over $100?? I knew they have increased $10, but isn't it supposed to be $79??

    • +17

adjusting for inflation, games are cheaper than ever.

games in the 80's were often around $60 which would translate to about $140-160 today.

      Excuse my armchair economics.

      • +4

I remember my Dad buying Jurassic Park on Mega Drive from Toys R' Us in the 90s for me and it being well over $100. He chastised me because my sister picked Taz-Mania for $40. Split custody had its benefits.

      • +9

Gamers will never understand how good they've had it for so long economically, even if you spell it out for them.

        • +2

i have too many games to play. what a problem to have.

      • +1

Let's take a moment to remember Street Figher 2 on the SNES. I recall that costing something like $120 when it released here. That was in 1992. Adjusted for 30 years of inflation you could probably double that to the equivalent of about $240 today.

That said, while I can understand the increase in game prices which, in fairness, is probably overdue, what does really disappoint me with Sony during the current PS5 era is their discounting, or lack of it. If I really want a game, I'll buy it day 1 for full price. Anything else I wait for a sale of half price or less. Sony have traditionally been pretty good in that regard - games launch at full price then gradually get discounted, so anything I didn't get at launch I would generally have bought within 12 months. In recent years, though… they've barely discounted anything, and when they do it's 25%, maybe 30% max.

The last game they released that got any meaningful discounting was The Last Of Us Part 2. Other than that, the likes of Ghost of Tsushima, Spider Man Miles Morales, Returnal, etc there's been basically nothing. These are games that have been out for a year or 18 months and still not seen any serious discounts. I suspect they're not discounting because they're trying to push people towards their higher tier PS+ subscriptions, but I have zero interest in any subscription service, be it PS+ or GamePass or anything else. End result, I've gone from somebody who buys a lot of games to somebody who buys very few. On the plus side, it has allowed me to work through a bit of my pile of shame. So I'm currently using my PS5 to play the PS4 remaster of a PS3 game (Dark Souls 2) instead of buying newer games.

        • +4

they've barely discounted anything, and when they do it's 25%, maybe 30% max.

All of those games you mentioned have had reasonable specials in the past few months:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716733 Spider-Man: Miles Morales $39
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664019 Returnal $50
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/694490 Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut $68

          • @hophead: They have had decent discounts, but that's not Sony discounting, that's Amazon. I'm talking about prices on PS Store where Sony have traditionally done decent discounts as games got older, but they don't anymore.

        • It was $139 at ToyWorld.

        • SF2 SCE on the Mega Drive was $130 from memory, SSF2 was $150.

In fact most MD games were around $90-$100 depending on cart size. That was alot in the early 90's.

          • +1

@Dreamcazman: Mortal Kombat 1 on the Mega Drive was $150. My friend's brother bought it and I occasionally drop by at his house to play after school.

        • The 3 games you mentioned are also on the playstation Extra package.
I bought it for 3 months and played Ghosts, Miles Morales and Returnal till I was satisified, and it cost me $55. Not for everyone but its a cheap option.

          • @Grosey: Yeah, like I said I think Sony aren't discounting anymore because they're trying to push people towards that subscription instead.

        • agro sore on gameboy game bought it on release 50 bucks sold it 650 aud

    • A$125 RRP, take off 10% tax included is A$112.5 which converts to USD 70, same as over there. This is the new pricing level that everyone is pushing towards as game prices have not risen for many years to keep up with inflations and increased costs. Thankfully physical disc versions are almost always much cheaper.

      • +2

Taking off 10% tax is $113.63. To apply gst you multiply by 1.1 to add 10%, to remove gst you divide by 1.1

        • you can still get it cheaper in the US by buying from a state that doesn't have sales tax.

      • +3

Your calculation is based on the current depressed exchange rate that isn't normal and wasn't what it was when they decided to change the price. So the prices don't translate to $70USD, it's purely greed on the Aus front.

    BOI

  • +9

I am very keen for this - but I'm going to attempt to be patient as it is a single-player game that will be fine when it's cheaper.

    • +4

Yeah I'm with ya dude, it's going to be discounted for Black Friday / Christmas sales for sure.

  • +2

Big w $95 for pick up. Got jb to price match through chat.

    • howd you get them to price match it? they saying they cant price match preorders as price could change

      • Guy on chat didn't say a thing. Sent him the link for big w price and he matched it within seconds. Jb just way more convient for me to pick up

  • is there a collectors edition of this?

    • Unfortunately sold out at EB games last week

      • when did it actually go on preorder? I get no notifications when a collectors edition of anything is released

        • +3

They originally went on sale on July 15th but were basically snatched up instantly. EB had the Collectors Edition, whilst JB had the Jotnar Edition (has a few extra items included).

EB had a second run of some extra stock they had a couple days ago and that's when I grabbed mine.

Best way to know when they go live is probably their Twitter page.

  • +1 because most likely it's a good game.
But definitely it's not a good deal.

    • +2

Can't believe anyone pre orders games these days. Too risky with the mentality of ship broken and patch when millions of paying users finish our testing.

      • +1

Yep. Preordering contributes to creating bad games. Stop preordering, then games have to sell on their current release quality instead of hype.

      • +2

Pre Ordered Horizon forbidden west, it had lot of graphics issues, the devs fixed them couple of months later.

Never going to pre order any game now.

Whoever is justifying these prices please don’t we live in a generation of gamers so you can’t compare to the 90s where a fraction of the population gamed. This is extremely expensive for the majority and really needs to change, $79 should be the price and would provide plenty of profit there is no need to rip people off when you can clearly make a large profit from a reasonable price. Don’t be a part of the problem and just wait for a sale.

    • +4

It’s a fair price for a game on launch day. You can wait few months and get it for 79. In a year or so, it might even be free on psn+

    • +2

It's literally a price on release.

    • +4

And game dev has grown from a 10 person team working on Super Mario World (~20 million copied sold) to a team of 300 on God of War 2018 (~20 million copies sold).

You get a 10-20 hour entertainment experience for less than $100. This is great value compared to basically every other entertainment medium.

    • would provide plenty of profit there is no need to rip people off when you can clearly make a large profit from a reasonable price

Where is your evidence for this statement?

Even this Kotaku article can't pinpoint exactly why video game prices are more expensive in Australia.

While I admit the source is Kotaku and it's old, it was the most specific thing I could find to test your statement.

    • +5

      $79 should be the price

At the risk of channelling my high school math teacher… Please show your working to get to this answer.

I've seen so many trailers of this game by now that I don't feel like playing it anymore.

    • +1

      Hmm I’ve not seen any..

      • That was a very wise decision my friend.

        • Because it looks shit? or ruins the story? Had my preorder since July lol

          • @chriise: No, it's definitely not shit. It's just that after 10 trailers, it's not that fresh anymore. For instance, I now know what some of the major characters look like.

          • @chriise: Novelty is a significant part of the customer experience for any product. It borderline creates a honeymoon period where you can overlook flaws and gripes. If you get overexposure via trailers, then you don’t to experience the honeymoon period at all.

Instead it feels like you’re just a jaded gamer when in reality the marketing campaign was just too protracted for its own good.

  • +1

It's $95 from Big W, and if you have Everyday Extra you can get an extra 10% off a single purchase a month.

    • BIG W does not have any pickup yet. only delivery for 3.90 and you will receive at Nov 14th estimated

      • All true, though it still works out cheaper. The shipping delay is a drag though.

  • +1

    Collector's Edition Includes:

Full Game for PS4™ and PS5™ (printed voucher)1
    16 inch Mjölnir (replica) Hammer
    Dwarven Dice Set

Steelbook Display Case (no game disc included)
    Knowledge Keeper's Shrine
    Digital Content Voucher

is there no physical disc version?

    • +1

Not with the Collector or Jotnar Edition, unfortunately.

They did the same with Horizon Forbidden West too.

      • Steelbook with no disc, hah. They are trolling the physical collectors now.

    • Nope just a key

  • Isn't getting PS4 + $10 cheaper?

    • Its ETA is 14-16 Nov.

    • Perhaps, but the upgrade to PS5 is not free

      • That's why I wrote "+ $10".

Edit: MB… It's USD 10, so works out exactly the same. Nevermind.

  • +1

I remember paying $80 for Dynamite Dux on the Master System back in about 1990 . I think it was from Toyworld in the country town I lived in ( I was 16 in 1990) . Finished the game in maybe 2-3 hours so took it back and they let me change it to something else. Can't remember what . Maybe Psycho Fox.

  • +1

Any experience of launch day delivery?

  • Games in the 90s had little content just ridiculous difficulty and a set number of lives where you often have to restart the game. for $100 back then its equal to $200+ now and you get 10x the amount of content these days. Games are pretty cheap to be honest.

    • Games are cheaper but people don't value them as much.
