400

Hi All,
First Post :-)
This is much the same as what was posted a few months ago except cheaper :-)

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66213

The comments made in the previous posting of this item by the Kaiser Baas Rep were very helpful as was a great user review by WalterBiH

I have purchased two for my lads for travelling (postage was doubled to $18.)

Sleek, ultra slim, portable design personal media player with 8" LCD, 4GB on-board memory and ability to decode and playback 1080p video.

Perfect for ‘on the go’ with its sleek, ultra slim, portable design and a rechargeable Li-ion battery, take your media files with you and watch them on the in-built 8 inch HD LCD screen. Consisting of a massive 4GB on-board memory, it has the capability to decode and playback quality video footage up to 1080P.

The unit supports a large variety of audio and video formats such as Divx, MKV, MP3, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and FLAC files. Also supported are a range of picture formats such as JPG, BMP and PNG and includes an integrated slideshow functionality with music. Ebooks in text format are also supported.

Your Kaiser Baas Personal Media Player contains a video output which enables you to play your media files on the TV. Multiple storage mediums such as SD cards, USB memory sticks and USB hard drives are handily interchangeable with the unit to extend its capacity.

The "was" price is just rubbish. However, seems fairly reasonable at the current price

  • +1

What are these like? I just want something small and easy for a small child to use for movies when we're travelling. Looks like it would do the job for an OK price.

  • Just as an FYI, here's the link to the previous Kaiser Baas Personal Media Player bargain from JB Hi Fi:

    • Thanks :) That pretty much answers all my questions.

  • +1

    just ordered one…..cheers!

isn't it better to add $30 extra to get a cheap tablet instead??? at least 1gb ram+8gb and wifi ( just self opinion…. sorry if I'm in the wrong track )

but it's still a good price for kids

    $49+9 = $58 already

$88.50 + Brainwavz Beta (loose pack) + Free Shipping
    http://www.mp4nation.net/tablets-phones/ainol-tablets/ainol-…
    * although with shit resolution screen

    • Yes for $30 more it's a no brainer.
You can do so much more with an android tablet, good review here -
      http://www.mp4nation.net/forum/f16/im-getting-ainol-tornados…

    • I have tried playing 1080p MTV files on my $199 toshiba 7". Won't work on any apps. I guess 1/4 of the price so I can use it as a sub to tablet and as a media player for my kids bedroom or on the go is worth it.

      • Are you sure this will play MTV files?
The rep on the previous post stated the formats it plays, but he didn't mention MTV -
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66213
Not on their website either -

        • +2

He's talking about his Toshiba tablet not the Kaiser Bass thingy, also I believe he meant "MKV" not "MTV".

The official site for the Kaiser says it will playback MKV, but doesn't specifically state 1080p MKV files only 1080p Dvix/xvid

        • +5

          I want my MKV!

        • +1

          Dire Straits, nice one ;)

  • not sure if ill get this, but has anyone used a JB HI-FI Gift Card online? I type in the Card Number + PIN and it says its invalid :(

still valid for almost a year. any help?

  • Any way of charging this in the car while playing movies? Been trying to work it out.

    • Chances are it would be possible. You could always get a cheap usb car adaptor and the corresponding cable

    • This is what I posted few posts bellow:

The DC socket is same as Sony PSP. So any charger/cable that is designed for PSP will work (you'll need 1 or 2Amps though).
I use this cable in my car (ignoring the extra USB data plug):
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2n1-PC-USB-Charger-Charging-Data-…

I also use this supposedly 2A adapter but have to say that while kids are watching @ max brightness + volume, it still gradually discharges battery:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-2A-Port-Universal-Mini-USB-…

The adepter works fine supplying 1A for my phone, but may not be able to supply full 2A for media player!? Or maybe it's the player itself? I've been meaning to test playing MKV at full brightness and volume while plugged in AC to see if the unit still discharges but never bothered.

  • isn't $169+delivery way too over-price? *** at least $70-$90 profit for JB-Hifi ***

Kaiser Baas is selling for $99.95 inc shipping

    http://www.kaiserbaas.com/wireless/personal-media-player

    • +1

isnt it half price with JB, hence a deal?

    • +1

$100 shipping via AusPost direct from them. This is no deal.

You negged because you didn't read this?:

To ship anywhere in Australia: $9.00

I am looking for a similiar tv out jack (not hdmi) on android device, anybody know of one ?

    • there might be hdmi cables convert hdmi out to component, AV etc.

    • Honestly bargrin, I reckon you're better off with a Raspberry Pi for composite out + HDMI.

      • +1

yeah Pi is cool but also need a screen for traveling, so can use on plane and can take over to mates place and plug into TV.

        btw check this:
        http://news.yahoo.com/gooseberry-takes-raspberry-pi-62-andro…

        • Cool, thx. Great specs for the price, but I'm not sure if it will get the same community/developer support as either the Arduino or R_Pi…only time will tell I suppose! :)

  • +2

Thanks OP. Bought 2, don't even care if just use it as a digital photo frame for its price and resolution.

    • +1

lol got 1 for the same reason
      thanks OP!

  • combined with this post to extend play time :)

sorry for off topic, which app is best to convert iso to mkv?

    • +1

      Handbrake

  • Anyone own this unit can talk about the remote pls? Easy to use and most important sensitivity? Found out most of the cheap media players remote not really that good

  • how many movies can you get out of it from full recharge? does this have a headphone jack? thanking of taking this on the plane.

    • Says upto 4hrs from their website

If you are flying qantas there will be iPad for in flight entertainment now? Why bother?

      • +6

Because he didn't say he was flying with Qantas.

        • +2

          Who's flying with Qantas anymore?

        • +2

Well apparently they fly for us, but they're not willing to budge on the price lol

      • +3

because i want to watch my own stuff?

      • I just flew with Qantas a few weeks ago and there was no iPad. Is that for business/first class only?

  • Almost buy one last time but didn't so this time I get two ;;)

    • +1

      that sounds reasonable!

  • +15

    negging myself.

    Blocked by the wife.

    Apparently we don't "need" it.

… different I assume to how she needs 28 pairs of shoes

    • +6

This is why I'm never getting married. I need the freedom to purchase all variety of useless gadgets.

    • Weak.

    • +3

Lol, wife won't let you make a $58 decision? Just say it is for the kids.

    • +12

It's much easier to beg forgiveness than seek approval.

    • +1

      I am with you mate.
There is logic and "wife logic" about purchases. She has two degree in psych but cannot explain why I get NO (zip nada nothing) closet space in our house as she "needs" it all.
I have seen dresses in there with the price tags still on from years ago…

Ever watched Animal Farm? Fairer for some… :p

  • +5

    funny device

i think you'd be forever explaining to people why the touchscreen does not work and why there's no apps installed

    • +4

My friend has a touch screen tv. I thing that is funnier if you walk to the tv to touch it and walk back to your seat when a remote control can do it all.

      • Does it also have an Internet TV app so you can shop online for TV cleaning fluid after all the fingerprints?

  • Anyone got any idea what (real/true) battery life is like?

  • Can this recharge via USB or just from the mains?

(I know recharging via USB will be slower)

    • yeah good question, cause if traveling with this I would like to plug it into one of those USB based portable power packs when battery low.

    • It can only recharge via the DC in socket - not via USB. However, you can use USB to DC plug adapter to charge using PC (slow), car adapter or even a phone charger.

Someone above asked for charging in the car. The DC socket is same as Sony PSP. So any charger/cable that is designed for PSP will work (you'll need 1 or 2Amps though).
I use this cable in my car (ignoring the extra USB data plug):

I have had one of these for about a month and use it every day. I thought an 8" screen would be too small but the resolution is very good so I find that ok (I convert my dvd's to mkv and allow 1GB per hour of movie)

It only has one speaker which is crappy but might be ok for kids ?
I use in ear headphones so then it is in stereo and sounds ok, the supplied headphones are too big for my ears.

Haven't tried to charge from usb, I use the supplied charger and it takes about four hours to charge, in use playing videos and brightness just under half it will play for about 4 hours.

I only used the onboard 4GB of storage a couple of times, it wasn't big enough for me for movies, it might be ok for photos, I use a 32GB SD card, format to NTFS so you can use files larger than 4GB.

Be aware that if you load 4GB of files onto the onboard storage the battery gets hot and the battery level falls by 25%.

I hope it lasts without breaking, at this price it's a bargain.

    • Thanks for that review mate. Made me pull the trigger.

      Cheers

      • yeah, thanks for joining to post this review.

    • Really helpful review, cheers.

Hey - whats this like as an eBook reader?
      Have you tried it?

  • I +'ed because it's a great price. However after much thinking I've decided that downloading movies to it would get old quickly. What I really want is the same specs and price but with Wifi to play directly from a server so that I can watch in bed or in a comfy chair. Gee, I'm hard to please. ;) This model would be great for travelling passengers though.

Being an OzB'er I tried to look for a free shipping or discount code, but didn't find any. Wonder if anybody else got lucky.

  • Aldi have a 7' ebook reader/media player with case on sale 01/08/12 for $59.99.

  • Those who owns this, is there a slideshow function that you can play photos and videos?

    • Yeap - and it's not too bad. You can also have background music for the photo slideshow.

      • Hey Walter, thanks. I mean, will the slideshow play photos AND videos? Or it is just either or?

Also, probably asking too much, but is it an IPS screen?

        • As far as I know, slideshow is only for photos.
And no, screen is definitely not the greatest quality (certainly not IPS) ;)
It is high resolution, non-reflective and decent picture quality, but poor viewing angle (especially when viewed from bellow). Quite sufficient for media player though and great for car use.

  • Silly question, but can you read ebooks (PDF) on this?

  • +1

This should be ok to play x264 mkv's to my gf's cheapie TV via component? What about audio?

    • It comes with an RCA cable to 3.5mm.

  • It should, 720p or 1080i? Stereo headphone jack out to tv?

  • This is not a whinge, just stating a fact. I went to try to buy two of these, and it wanted to charge me twice for delivery.

    Boo :(

  • +2

PS - this sets the bar pretty darn high in terms of best first post - well done OP !!

  • Love how it can be used as a media player too! Could never watch mkv files at the mrs house, now it seems I can. So many uses for $58!

  • Thanks OP, I got one. Main use will be as a digital photo frame. With the resolution, the very nice design, and the extra features, i think it's a bargain. But i will definately take it places too, for showing pics/vids.
Don't need any of the tablet gadgetry, i've got my smart phone for that, or my laptop. :)

  • Bought one for digital photo frame.
    Thanks OP.

  • bought one to use when riding the exercise bike.. should keep me interested.. MKV files too, awesome!

  • I keep "nearly" buying this but I wonder if it will die a slow death due to lack of updates.
Anyone know the story with these guys re firware updates etc?

  • Not sure do ppl know that, it's not a touch compatible display !

it's a 2+ years old machine, with different name called "Aluratek APMP101F" before, 40% off for 2+years old is reasonable but but really that "BARGAIN"

$58 for no touchscreen, no wifi, no android

the RRP is just $99.95 inc shipping

  • Anyone knows what is the warranty like for DOA? Just walk into a jbhifi store and ask for a replacememt?

    • I doubt that. It looks like a warehouse special and not in stores. Anyway when they are sold out they're sold out, so probably the best the can do is refund your money.

  • Does it plays dts sound? Many 1080p files are such.

  • i got my unit this morning for some reason it doesn't seem to turn on :(
Looks like i might have to take it back to jbhifi for a refund…

    • Quick question, did you flick the switch on the side before pressing the power button on the front?

  • I bought one of these primarily just to use on my desk at work. Will have photos going on while plugged into my little speakers, I'm really keen on the reviews. Thanks OP

  • yay mine just arrived…now i must learn to not put my grubby prints all over the touch screen thinkin its a tab

doe it need a firmware update?

  • Mine arrived today.

So far very impressed, comes with all the cabling to plug in a usb stick, to plug directly into the computer, component cabling and a rca out cable, a charger and a suede carry bag.. oh and remote.

Played the latest ep of breaking bad in 720p, very watchable, speaker isn't great but does the job, headphones out sounds great.

    Very happy for the price

  • well, well. Tried The Raid Redemption mkv dts 1080p. Excellent! No prob with HD files off Strong and DM800 pvrs.

    • Hey when you connect it up to another display, can you shut off the tablet's own screen?
      (might be a bit distracting)

      • Yes, you use either its own LCD or TV screen.

  • I would like to be able to charge this via usb in the car.
Is this a 3.5mm power jack?
The centre pin compatability is the concern.. i have no idea how to measure
it seems slightly bigger than other devices i have

    • It's a DC power jack like this

      http://www.viltkamera.no/webshop/images/dcplug1.png

The outside diameter is approx 2mm and the supply is 5v and 2.5 amps which is pretty beefy (if you modded the charger cable to run off a USB hub a lot of them would be unhappy with the load I would imagine.

Just out of interest I found the unit does not charge off USB only the 240V adaptor :-(

  • Hi, for those that have this device, is the screen 16:9 i.e if I put something I have recorded from my tv in 16:9 format, will it fill the whole screen on this device (or will I get black bars etc.) Thanks!

    • I got mine yesterday, only checked photos.
I found the screen is bit unusual 5:3 (1280x768).
For 16:9 video does it mean there will be a vertical bar on both sides?

  • JUST EXPIRED !

  • Now need to find cheap screen protector :)

  • +1

I found a random usb cord in my draw of cords and it does charge this.
For a screen protector im going to try and cut down one of my spare tab 7.7 protector.
Was also have a few playback issues with random cutouts using a lexar class 10 micro sd.
Bought a full size sandisk ultra and no cut outs during videos now.
My 4yr loves it and does keep trying to touch the screen lol.
The player wont be white for long as it easily marks.

  • Has anyone tried playing mts files from a camcorder on these ?
