I wonder if I just pour some honey over it that it will be like that Red Rooster Honey Chicken.

    • Becomes Korean Fried Chicken.

      • Gotta use Korean honey.

  • +5

Thems sure is hot, even four a southern boy. Why I say that's one burning ring of fire.

If only they had the tegal take out burgers back in stock 😫 😢

Costco were supposed to have them as well but none to be found.

    • +2

Tegels Southern style burgers were fantastic. Only reason I held a Costco membership.

      • +2

        Unavailable

        • Burgers are available at multiple Woolies stores near me per the stock checker. Wouldn’t be paying full price for them though.

      • +1

I miss these so bloody much.

From what I understand they just immediatly end stock

    • +2

I second this, love the burgers but are they only seasonal? Or they just dont get produced often?

    • +25

have a unopened pack in the freezer chasing $600 or a q930b soundbar

    • +1

There were some at Boolaroo on Sunday. They were doing samples.

  • is tegel chicken good quality or bargain bin stuff?

    • +11

great stuff IMO. I'd pick this over KFC any day of the week

      • +5

KFC have fallen so far that frozen chicken is now better.

I took advantage of that 4 piece App hack, and it was just god damn awful. Tiny tiny pieces and it was the breast and thigh pieces at that, wonder where they got the tiniest of chickens, and despite freshly out of the fryer (had to wait 15 minutes for it), it was soggy and bland.

        • +2

If you haven't tried it, Red Rooster fried chicken is awesome. Not cooked with 11 herbs and spices if that's your thing, it's just fried chicken that's been brined but it's super juicy and crispy.

          • @Ghost47: I tried Red Rooters fried chicken when it first came out (free offer) and it was massively salty. It wasn't worth the price of free.

            • @Loopholio: Some batches I’ve had have been overly salty as well. Definitely agree when it’s over-salted it’s quite bad. When it hasn’t been like that it’s been very good though.

      • Well you didn't set that bar very high now did you?

    • please define good quality chicken

      • +3

It's very subjective but everyone should try it. I agreed with pd145 that it's better than some of the KFCs. Some KFCs are dry small pieces. At least, this one is bigger portion and it taste really good if you like the hot one!

    • +1

Personally i think this stuff tastes like shit, but each to their own

      • +1

The Aldin ones are good but I need a change

      • Thanks for your ok input, will keep it in mind.

        • +5

It tastes like shit because you are putting the chicken in the wrong hole first.

      • I agree. The only thing this beats KFC on is price.

  • Cage free means not free-range?

    • +5

Cage free but not wall free. Still enclosed in a barn like area.

  • +2

Yeah bring back the burgers. I'd even pay full price for them.

  • +8

Hit and miss quality. I won't take the chance again myself.

Half the bag was nice chicken.

The other half was grey, jelly junk.

    • +2

I got them last time and they were rubbery garbage, never again

    • +4

How does a manufacturing process produce half good and half bad?

      • +1

I've eaten a lot of these (well, the Louisiana version) and don't know what they're referring to. Maybe the Colesworth freezers where they buy them aren't at the correct minimum temperature and something weird is happening to the chicken!?

        • The chicken is trash. I put it down to different standards in NZ. Your logic doesn't explain why these portions go to jelly while Inghams wings are always top notch being in the same freezer.

          • @Chipwich: But that's what I'm saying… none of the 20-25 packs I've bought so far, spread across several weeks, have done that.

    • Same got it once, on top of poor quality was extremely oily.

    • Produced and packed in New Zealand using ingredients from multiple sources.

Pass. Probably referring mainly to the spices, but still. I don't trust frozen fish products from NZ either - I don't think they have to disclose where they got the fish from.

  • Burgers are still available just not on special.

    • +1

So they are not available then. This is ozbargain, full priced items are invisible to us.

  • Junk and take away is getting cheaper than whole foods. The end is nigh.

    • +1

It has been going the opposite direction.

Back in the 90s minimum chips was always $1 or $2 and would feed a family. These days it’s $6 and it’s for one.

You’d still get more value for money out of buying a whole chicken, making some breading and cooking it yourself but this stuff is a great time saver.

    • It's really not, this is just for lazy people. Buying a whole chicken is way cheaper.

    • I feel like its gone the opposite way. 10 years ago in my tafe study days my diet consisted of double beef n bacons and monopoly maccas wins, now it costs the same as the proper burger joint next door, I wont even go near fast food unless its a deal through the app.

  • +4

    Too salty…

    • and too oily but it tastes better than KFC!

      • I beg to differ

  • +2

Pretty decent chicken for the price, great for making some KFC rice as well.

  • +1

No stock in Sydney as always

  • +1

Tried this on the last post and wasn't a fan. My bag was full of rib pieces and a couple of breast pieces that were really dry using the air fryer instructions. Thigh pieces might have been OK but didn't get any so luck of the draw I suppose. Costco siracha chicken pieces are still the best.

    • +2

I found I had to cook them in the airfryer for way less time than the instructions say. Like 25mins instead of 40mins or whatever it says. Turned out way juicer and nicer.

      • My second batch I only did for about 25 mins, still found it quite dry. Luck of the draw on the rib and breast pieces played a part but either way I think there are much better options that are consistently good.

        • At what temperature?

    • I turn the temp down a bit from what they say and give a light spray of oil at the start, then again halfway through. It gives a much nicer result. I don't know what people are doing who claim it's oily, because if you follow the instructions as-is, you get an unappetizing overcooked mess that is dry, hard, and burnt - and and larger pieces are barely cooked inside, often still with red sections.

    • +1

LPT. There is a little semi-transparent window at the back of the pack. You can see whats in the particular bag that you got. Personally I like the breast and rib/thigh pieces and avoid the wing/drumsticks.

  • how does the spiciness compare to wicked wings?

    • Spicier but depends on the KFC store and how much they wash the marinade off before breading it. My local used to be really hot but over time has cooled off. Most of the places I buy WW from they have no heat.

    • +2

Would argue that pretty much anything is spicier than wicked wings lol.

      • +2

Agreed, I don't get why people rave on about KFC Hot & Spicy either. It's basically the same level of spice as Wicked Wings are. Belle's Hot Chicken is way better if people are after spicy fried chicken.

        • Which Belles store? In Melbourne I tried their F***ing hot one and it was $18 for a chicken fillet with burned paprika coating.

  • Excellent chicken at this price. Not sure anyone would pay full price though.

    • Other comments above don't give me confidence and make me question whether to buy.

      • At $7 what's the worst thing that could happen?

FWIW I like them but prefer the non-spicy version as I'm weak. The burgers are also great and would prefer those if they were the same price.

        • Would like these with Masterfood Jalapeno Burger sauce with fresh chopped Birds Eye chilles & Jalapeno slices, would be fiery hot.

P.S I'm sweating jsut writing this

      • +4

You need recommendations to buy a $7 bag of chicken 😆

        • More because I am thinking of buying two or three packs.

          • @random12: Nothing is stopping you from buying 1, trying it out and buying more if you like it. Food taste is subjective and personal preference based. What someone says tastes nice to them may not be the same for someone else and vice versa. So your entire logic is moot.

            • @thousandsuns: It takes 1hr round trip. So buying 2 or 3 at once saves times compared to doing one for a trial, and then coming back for more

              • @random12: Buy one. Try it. Like it? Place a click and collect order for next week at the same special price.

              • @random12: I am going to apologise for my vent in advance.

You are just plain absurd. If people here say they like eating manure, will you join the bandwagon? If you do not value the 1 hr trip then don't ask people to tell you whether you should buy a $7 bag of chicken. Otherwise just spend the damn $14-$21 to get extra ones to save you the trip. It is astonishing sometimes how people can be so frugal even when it comes to food 🤦‍♂️
I'm guessing you are not just buying for yourself and maybe for your family too so maybe just have that thought on your mind next time when it comes to bargain food shopping. Even if so it is just for you, you should learn to form your own opinions when it comes to things such as food because it is completely based on personal preference.

Too much oil comes out of these, even in an air fryer with a drain I have to use paper towels.

    • Chili oil?

      • +1

Cooking oil, it's 1kg but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just 0.5kg of actual meat given how much is in it.

  • +4

These were fantastic at $2.80 a bag

  • These taste like crap in my opinion both regular and especially spicy, and a metric tonne of seed oil comes out of them. Better off getting the home brand wing dings if your gonna splurge on some frozen snacks, literally can't think of any better frozen chicken available.

    • +1

This is an exaggeration. I use a glass bowl type of air fryer (bench top convection halogen oven) and from about three months ago I was cooking 2-3 pieces of these every night for several weeks because I was busy and it was easy. Some oil comes out of course. But after going through more than a dozen bags there was only a couple of cm of oil in the bottom of the bowl and that's with me spraying additional oil on. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13472502/redir

Apart from the fact some oil is needed for taste (no oil means nearly no-one would buy them because they'd taste "Meh!"), in the bottom of the bowl, OUT of the chicken, is exactly where you want most of the oil.

  • +1

These are hit or miss.. when its good its good. But when its bad, its basically inedible.

  • Man, this thing is made of oil. Should've been 6400 calories per serving.

  • +1

I didnt mind it. Used the airfryer. Doesnt beat KFC wicked wings, but its a decent alternative for a late night snack

  • It feels like these are always on special/sale

    • Every 2 to 3 weeks.

  • Give burger special!

  • These go alright. Much nicer than I expected. Usually half price every second week at Woolies.

  • +2

    Portions 1kg
    Chicken (66%)

    🤔 660g chicken.

    • -1

      So about $10/kg.

  • Take away horrid coating and bones, the Inghams chicken breast burgers for $5-6 for 400Grams is better value honestly.
    No bargain here

    • link?

  • Whats the meat to crumb ratio?

    • 66% meat, see above

      • Thanks.

Better than most frozen fish items, but I suppose the chicken has bones that’s counted.

  • How do these go in the air fryer?

    • +1

They take a while to cook in the airfryer I've found, almost as long as a conventional oven, I wanna say around 30-40 mins at 180? They turn out real good though, really nice and crispy.

    • +2

1 hour 160 degree and the chicken is soft and succulent.
