Recommendations for a Decent Helmet for Escooting

I am planning to buy an escooter. Probably one of those f30/40a.

But not sure what kind of helmet I should get.

Recommendations pls.

Haha I read that title very wrong and was expecting a much more exciting post. May I suggest a hyphen?

I also misread it lol.. dirty minds think alike.

I was thinking 'what kind of kinky shit is the OP up to to require a helmet?'.

  • Whatever fits your dome the best..

The best helmet is a motorcycle helmet but that is probably overkill

Next best is probably a full face BMX/MTB helmet

The next best is a standard cycling helmet. They all meet the same Australian standard so are all 'safe', but there are some which have additional safety mechanisms. Have a look at 'half shell' MTB helmets which generally offer a bit more protection than a road helmet (more side and rear cover).

Dont forget protective gloves and maybe even wrist braces or knee pads. Skateboarder stuff.

    • yep, having stones/gravel dug out of palms does not sound like fun

If you're going to secure it to your scooter, a cheap one. If you're planning to use also for cycling, get the most ventilation you're prepared to pay for

Something light and comfortable. Preferably meeting FIA 8860-2018 ABP standards to ensure you will be maximally protected in the case of an accident. Something like this would probably be the bare minimum.

    • You must be kidding lol

  • I'm really happy with this one: https://www.99bikes.com.au/giro-switchblade-mips-helmet-matt…

Expensive but I came off my scooter and the chin part saved my face from impacting with the road.

    • I went chin first into the road off a bike as a teenager, the stitches and concussion make me wish I had one of those on at the time.

Most important is one that fits YOUR scone. They’ll all meet the relevant Aus Standard (assuming it’s sold retail in Aus). For example, I’ve bought bike helmets over the years and puffs some expensive ones just feel weird, despite having ‘better’ features. It’s not worth getting a ‘better’ one if it’s not comfortable. For this reason I won’t recommend any particular brand or model.

Go to a bike shop and try some for size. Alternatively, Kmart etc usually have a decent range and you can try them too.

  • BMX style helmet that covers the back of your head if you want something that doesn't look ridiculous. But given the design of a scooter and how you are likely to end up face-planting, something with a chinguard. The mountain biking world has a load of suitable helmets- lightweight full face or lightweight with removable chinguards.

You don't need motorcycle helmets- those things are designed for much higher speed impacts than you should be worried about on a scooter. They are also very heavy and hot.

    • I am certainly not considering the motorcycle helmets. Actually I have one. I sold my motorbike years ago, but have still kept my helmet.

I get it that a bike helmet will be enough. Actually I do also have a bike helmet. I will keep an eye on a decent bmx style. Thanks

      • Just use your bike helmet then.

I got this one recently (just posted it as a deal): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763253

It seems OK. Doesn't have anything like MIPS etc. Is tight, but apparently they are meant to be.

    • I may try it in store. Thanks.

      • You don’t need a full face helmet for an e scooter.

    • I also ordered this.
